I'll continue to keep a question mark next to this news item as I'd like to see it verified by other sources with more details and have the mom's age confirmed, but for better or worse, here's the information:

According to the wire story linked below, a 70 (or possibly 72)-year-old woman named Omkari from the village of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, India gave birth to a boy/girl set of twins on Friday, June 27. No other details were provided although it does say the woman has two other daughters and that both mom and the newborns are fine.

If true, she'd become the oldest-ever parent of twins (oldest-ever to give birth regardless of number of babies, for that matter) breaking the previous record that you can read about here - Oldest_Parents_of_Twins (the previous record-holder was just a few days shy of her 67th birthday)

Still trying to find out more about this new mom in India, but interestingly, here's an update on Adriana Iliescu, who is also 70 years old, and now living on a small pension in the UK raising her 3-year-old daughter, the surviving girl of a set of twins born when Ms. Illiescu was almost 67.

I think that's pretty bad to have kids when you're 70. I know everyone can die young but please, 70, that's old... and I really don't see how she will be able to take care of her twins...

I think its sad to be having children at 70. I am glad everyone is doing well but can she really raise them at 70?

ABC News has more details on this birth along with video and an interview with the father, 75-year-old Charam Singh (other reports say he's 77). They are the parents of two grown daughters and five grandchildren, but the father told a reporter that they drained their life savings and took out a loan so they could try to have a son.

The mom is actually 72 years, Omkari Panwar, (some reports say she is 70 as she was nine back in 1947) and underwent in-vitro and a very difficult pregnancy to deliver boy/girl twins a month early. The hospital wasn't sure if the mom would survive (she was on bed rest almost the entire pregnancy) but she did.

http://abcnews.go.co...S...9018&page=1

I'll reserve additional judgement on the story but feel free to post yourcomments here. I will say that hopefully this is the last time we have to update the world's oldest mom of twins record.

Here's another link on this birth. It places the age of the mom at 70 (she doesn't apparently have a birth certificate but rememers being nine years old when India gained its independencefrom Britain in 1947) and the dad at age 77. It also says both twins were born a month prematurely and each weighed 2 lbs, 9 ounces, which would be on the small side if they were indeed born at 36 weeks.

The New York Daily News story has a photo of the mom and dad and their twins.

I am glad everyone is well but having children at 70 is just selfish. By the time they are 10 she will be 80!! It would be like having your great grandma look after you. Its just wrong

2lbs + at 36 weeks? That's really small!!! Imagine how bad her osteoporosis is going to be after having those babies suck all the calcium out of her for 36 weeks.

I can't imagine PURPOSELY getting pregnant at that age!!! It's shocking really! shok.gif

I think any child is a blessing, but I do have to agree that this was probably not a very wise thing to do. Unfortunately, having a ds is a really big deal in the Indian culture. Baby girls are frequently aborted in the pursuit of having a ds. I wonder if the doctors who did the IVF procedure realized how old she was...

It's a pretty amazing medical accomplishment. I am sure that the family will be helping her a lot. I just feel badly for the twin girl....doesn't sound like she is really wanted in all this.
