Both of mine have a rash on their bottoms that I think is yeast. They've had it for weeks now. It has not gone away. it looks like clusters of pimples. So I called them today to see what to do and they said I needed to bring them in and have it cultured. I hate to go to the pedi office b/c they aren't sick, but surely will get sick there! Also, the only appt. they would give me was at naptime, which I hate! They will be miserable all day! So it's going to be $50 for copay, no nap and sick kids on top of the rash!

So has anyone had a diaper rash cultured? I guess they'll figure out what it is and give them an antibiotic if necessary...

It sounds like yeast, if it is red and pimply. I would stick with the Nystatin for now. How long have they had it? Has their diet changed recently? Have they been sick? Coxsackie virus can also cause a sore bottom with lesions, but again that would not need a culture, just a trained eye to spot it. As long as it does not look out of the ordinary from a typical diaper/yeast rash, I would say go with your gut. And if it does not clear in about 2-3 days, take them in.

The only thing they may want to culture for would be Herpes,( I havee seen this type of culture done I'm an NP/RN), but what you described does not sound like Herpes lesions.

I don't have experience with having a rash cultured, but if you've been putting the Nystatin on it for three weeks with no improvement I'd definitely have it looked at. Good luck and let us know what the ped says!

Thanks Laura Since I've been putting the nystatin on it for over 2 weeks now and it hasn't cleared up they said it needs to be looked at. Nothing has really changed in their diet or anything like that. Catherine has been wearing pull ups at times which I know don't wick the moisture away as well, but that wouldn't explain Andrew having it! It isn't very red, it's just batches of the little pimples and they don't appear to be pustules (Catherine had those once before). I'm almost 100% sure it's yeast, I just don't understand why it won't go away!

Blake had a rash culture 2 weeks ago. He barely noticed what was going on. Dr. thought that it might be Strep B I think? The results came back with nothing and it has since cleared up after he recommended Lotrim and Vaseline.

Yes, it was yeast, and I think that Nystatin is for the birds. They want to make sure it isn't something like a Staph infection.

They may give antibiotics of some kind taht will take care of it, but I almost always say forget it, since I try to give my kids as little of antibiotics as possible, and rubbing grapefruit seed extract (the miracle cure for SO many things) in a water solution on it, it is gone in a day! Ask if you have any questions. I hope that things get better so soon!

We haven't ever had a rach cultured, but H gets a rash like that someimtes. Our pedi told us to use anti-fungal cream (just OTC on the foot cream isle... like for athlete's foot). It clears it right up. Good luck with it.

I've never had one cultured, but Bea had a yeast diaper rash and I used Lotrimin with Triple Paste on top on it, it started clearing up in a day. It was also red and bumpy. I didn't want to go to the Pedi just for a diaper rash, so I asked about it on here and that was the advice I got!
If they aren't in discomfort, I would maybe try the Lotrimin and Triple Paste for a couple days, then go in if that's not working.

Have you used Nystatin successfully in the past? We were prescribed Nystatin for Claire once, and it actually made her rash worse.. It never would've gone away using that stuff. Once we stopped using the Nystatin, and used something else OTC (I can't remember ), it cleared up within a couple of days.

Yes, Aaron had these blistery things that I kept taking him in for, they kept giving me different creams. I finally demanded a culture. It was strep. I never knew you could get strep down there. He had been battling it on and off for months, and after a round of antibiotics it was finally cleared.

I have switched pediatricians since then....

I've never had one cultured, but we've also had rashes that have gone on for weeks and the anti-fungal creams have not helped. In these cases, they were bright red flat rashes which the doctor said was likely bacterial and to try bacitracin on it. This has usually helped, but it took a while.

I would definitely get the culture done if they are offering it. Let us know how it turns out - I'm curious. I hope you can get it cleared up soon!

Nystatin is an anti-fungal, right? Have you tried Lotrimin, which is specifically for yeast? (Or am I crazy and they're just different brand names for the same thing?) I would probably try the Lotrimin cream for a day or two before taking them in to the doctor for a culture. Natalie had a terrible rash that wouldn't go away, then at my pedi's rec we did Lotrimin layered with Triple Paste and it started clearing right up. You could tell the difference by the very next diaper change after we started using it.

I tried Lotrimin too when I ran out of nystatin. I've been treating it for a while now. I haven't tried triple paste, but I guess I should go buy some of that too! I think I've tried every other diaper cream.

Have you tried an OTC yeast treatment for women? My pedi suggested this for my daughter who does suffer from yeast infections vaginally because she is on a daily antibiotic for what seems like will be forever. My pedi has also suggested that for diaper rash. It worked very quickly!

Both Jenner and Cody have nearly constant diaper rashes. Every time we go to the pedi, they always say yeast infection. We use the nystatin as well as ointment and as soon as the rashes get better someone will have a messy diaper in the middle of the night and then we are back to square one again. I swear, their skin is so sensitive.

I have written down some of these suggestions and hope that you will update us if they go through with the cultures.

I am having the same problem with DD. I have used Nystatin because it has ALWAYS worked in the past within a day. But it doesn't seem to make a difference. I have used Butt Paste and nothing, the only thing that seems to even work at all is Neosporin and Triamcinalone (prescription) as topicals. (It's on the very outside on the front and crevice of her leg, not on her rear)
I want to take her in like you but hate the copay for just a rash. They need their second flu shot and an ear infection recheck this week, so I am going to ask about her rash.
