Hello everyone. My wife and I are expecting twins. We live in Tampa, FL, are new to the area and are looking for a good OB and peri. She is only 11 weeks, but has suffered from OHSS, severe nausea 24/7 since the first week, and now pelvic/sciatic pain where she can barely walk. We were with a feritlity clinic until now, and we now have to find a good OB. We started out with one women's group in Brandon and have not had a good feeling and we don't really trust the doctor. Can anyone recommend a good OB and peri in the Tampa area and tell me about your experiences? What hospitals are able to accomodate the special needs of a twin pregnancy? We are close to Brandon hospital and have heard that they have a level 3 nursery, but we don't know much about it. Any advice would be very much appreciated. I want to make sure that my wife and I feel very comfortable with our doctor and hospital. What is the best way to find a doctor we can trust?

    thanks so much

[IMG] and CONGRATULATIONS!! I do not live in Florida but
I do have OHSS - It was bad at first - if she can tolerate Boost high protien drinks - those are what my doctor recommended for the OHSS
now (I am 34wks!)it is still there but not painful. Has she asked the doctor if they can prescribe anything for the nausea? there are things that she can take - bless her heart that alone is miserable! Sometimes I have these stabbing vaginal pains (sorry for the tmi!)
that started around where she is - I find that if I drink more water
and sit with my feet propped up it helps - drinking I know is hard for her right now because of her nausea - but they told me to drink at least 1 gallon of water per day!!

Congrats on the twins. Can't help with the OB or the OHSS, but as pp said the Dr. can give her something for the nausea. I took Phenegran and Vitamin B6 and it made a huge difference.
    Good LUck

So I'll post my experiences later today.
Just wanted to let you know I'm here and it's great to have some more twinfamilies here in Tampa!

CONGRATULATIONS and welcome to Tampa! I am also 11 weeks along and expecting twins (identical) in Tampa. I have been going to the USF group on Davis Island (813-259-8573) and will deliver at TGH (with twins, you want to deliver at TGH or St. Joe's only). There are about 7 regular ob's in this group - only one of which I am not thrilled with. The rest are great, so that's a pretty good ratio. Plus the staff is fantastic. My main doc is Dr. Holmstrom. The other perk is that Dr. Quintero, who is a top doc for multiple births, is a high risk ob in that same group, so if necessary, he is accessible. For example, he has, so far, checked all of my ultrasounds, even though my appts are not directly with him. It makes me feel a little better to know someone so highly qualified has a hand in my care.

Good luck! And if you have other questions, please don't hestitate to ask!

    Hi Paula,

Wow, thank you so much and congratulations (you're almost there!). It's great to know there are people in the Brandon area on this forum. I would really appreciate any information that you can share. Have you joined any twin parenting groups in the tampa area? Can't wait to hear from you.....thanks so much

if you'd rather talk than type everything (or if we have to take this discussion off the forum), just let me know and i can email you my phone number.....

    Hi SilvrHeart,
Thanks so much for the reply. Wow, you and my wife have the same exact 'due date.' I have seen Quintero's name on a lot of web sites and assumed he was a very good specialist around the Tampa area. Why do you suggest only TGH and St Joes for twins? Brandon Hospital has a level3 nursery, is there something wrong with Brandon? We had the first appointment with the OB at Women's Care in the Brandon area and waited 2 hours to be seen by the doctor. It was terrible and my wife was in so much pain. When we finally got in, we asked the doctor a zillion questions, but really didn't get many answers, she just shook her head in agreement with everything we said. She didn't offer any advice or help on anything. She actually couldn't even give us the correct 'due date.' How bizarre is that? We had IVF done, so you'd think she'd come up with the right date???? How are the nurses and other staff with the USF group? Are they nice? Are you able to call and get answers quickly? I'm assuming they rotate you thru all 7 doctors. So, you're only 11 weeks and already had a few ultrasounds? Our doctor hasn't even scheduled one yet!!! The only ultrasound we had were from the infertility clinic....have you joined any twins groups in the tampa area?

thanks again for all of your help....

Hi Brian -- My 40 week due date is June 27, but I guess that can change? I'm so sorry you've had such a bad experience with your Brandon docs but I know that from office to office - and even doc to doc - the care a patient gets can vary tremendously. I believe that patients have to read up on what to expect and then listen to their gut if something seems off. It sounds like that's what you guys have done - It's very good that you and your wife are looking around NOW for something that you're more comfortable with rather than waiting.

To find my group: I did a TON of research on Tampa ob's before I even got pregnant. I had criteria including from specialties, location, education, and few/no previous catastrophic med mal lawsuits. This group fit everything I wanted and that's how I ended up picking them. when I found out it was twins, I just felt lucky that Dr. Quintero is there too. Anyway, I had met Dr. Holmstrom before we even began trying to get pregnant and i was very comfortable with her and the office. Everyone in the office is super nice - i particularly like a nurse named Sandra who is just so sweet everytime my husband and I go in. Yes, they rotate you through b/c you never know who will be on call when it's time to deliver, but you get to choose who you meet at each appt. I haven't been seen by everyone yet, but I've met a few of the regular ob's and live down the street from a few of the others, so I feel very comfortable with the group as a whole (except, like I said, one doc who was nice but we disagreed as to when my next u/s should be; luckily, it's a big enough group that I can get someone else to order it for me when I think it should). I have only had to call in with a question/problem once (i woke up w/a cold and didn't know what I could take) and I got a call back from the doctor within the hour. So I was pleased with that turn around time. I've had other questions as well but i find that I am more confortable doing my own research online and reading books and kinda "knowing" the answer before I ask the docs - that is how I have always been, though, and I am a strong believer in patients educating themselves and taking an active role in their own care and as their own best patient advocates. As far as hospital choice goes - TGH and st. joe's are the best places to deliver in tampa (singletons or multiples) in my opinion b/c they have the highest level nicu in the area (I think both are a level 4). I decided that I wanted a group affiliated w/TGH over St. Joe's but only b/c I work on Harbour Island and wanted to be close to the hospital - you know, just in case. I had a friend who delievered over 2 months early, quite traumatically, at UCH and the baby had to be taken to TGH b/c UCH's nicu couldn't handle how premature he was. It may seem like a minor point to some, but not to me - though everything is fine now, had she delivered at TGH they would not have needed to move the baby and she could've recovered in the same place as her new son.

My advice to you and your wife is to make some calls VERY soon - it can sometimes take awhile to get in for a first appt with an ob. You might even tell them that you're looking to switch to a group w/more high risk ob's b/c you're having twins and your wife has had some issues - see if that helps get you in a little quicker.

Please let me know how things go and what you decide to do. I'm hoping everything works out for the best for you. We have not yet found a twin group in Tampa but between our two families and Paula's, we could probably start our own! Seriously, though, we've been relying A LOT on this website (SO much great info!) and my husband's family (who is local) to be our support. But a group would be great - I'll keep an eye out and will let you know if I find something.

SilvrHeart, thank you so much for the detailed response. We will certainly take your advice. I fully agree with the patient taking responsiblity for their own care. We have done so much research on the web and reading books, but we have also managed to freak ourselves out a bit. We do not have any family and very few friends in the area that can help us when the twins are born, so we're pretty much on our own. We will have some family coming from Pittsburgh for the first few weeks, but after that, it's just me and my wife. We're going to have to get creative with finding help! Needless to say, we're a little nervous but excited. So far, she's had such a rough time, I want to make sure that she has the best possible doctors.

I want to look into your group with the USF doctors. Our infertility group was from USF and we loved them. I wonder if your doctors have any other offices somewhere closer to where we live? I'm going to certainly look into it.

My wife will be at 40 weeks on June 27th as well, but we fully expect that she'll deliver a few weeks before. She wants a c-section, so it will be planned out as long as she can carry them to full term. To arrive at the June 27th date, how exactly did you calculate it? I know that sounds stupid, but with IVF, things seem to be a bit different when coming up with the due date.

My email address is [email protected]. Please keep in touch. Has everything gone ok so far for you? Did you have morning sickness? My wife has had unbelievable morning sickness all day long, just about daily since this whole thing started. Now, she has this sciatic/pelvis pain, and she can barely walk. It keeps getting worse. The doctor (who we weren't impressed with), said there was nothing we could do.

I found a tampa twins group (www.tampatwinsclub.org). I spoke with the president of the club and she was really really nice, and actually pointed me to this forum for advice. They have big groups in north tampa and brandon, but these folks are from all around tampa. They are having a little x-mas party this saturday and she invited us. We're going to go check it out and meet some of these nice people. They seem really nice. I'm sure you can check it out too if you are interested. Let me know and i can talk to her. I can forward you the email from the group so you can check it out if you'd like.

thanks again for all of your help and advice....

Hi everyone in Tampa, Im over here in Clearwater. Im glad to hear others are expecting twins in the area. I think I am the only one right now in my doctors office. I have friends locally with twins but they are all older. Anyways, Im due June 21. They dont think I'll go past May since my other 3 kids were all early and I carry REALLY low. Keep in touch.

hi Melissa! i'm so glad there are a few of us in the Tampa area all due around the same time - it's very reassuring!

Brian - to answer your questions, they told me my due date after asking me the date of my last period. The docs and nurses all had a circular tool thing in their pockets that figured it out for them, but we didn't do ivf. I'm not sure how having done ivf would change your due date - maybe someone else on this site would know? Like your wife, I'm pretty much figuring I won't last 40 weeks! I'm also thinking I'd rather schedule a c-section with the doc of my choice rather than leave it up to chance. I guess i'll see how things go over the next several months. I had all day morning sickness (though little vomiting) starting in week 6. It's starting to subside, but I still get ill in the morning, at night, and while brushing my teeth (my dentist is going to hate me when this is over). I've also had consistent insomnia, frequent peeing, crazy fatigue, and intermittent back pain, but i know i have had it pretty good compared to most. I feel bad for your wife - I've had trouble coping with the few symptoms I've had so I think I would've cracked if it had been worse! I really hope things ease up for your wife soon, or a new doc can give her something to help. Is she working thru all this? I am but I basically sit at a desk all day, so i can't complain.

We have a pretty decent support network but, even so, we will eventually be on our own as well and will have to get creative. I think finding full time childcare so i can go back to work is going to be my biggest headache! Nevertheless, I would be interested in checking out the group you mentioned, but not quite yet. My husband and I have just started telling our friends about the babies, and haven't yet told either of our employers, so we're not quite "out" enough yet to go that public : ) Our plan is for everyone to know by the end of the month (since I seem to get a little bit bigger everyday) and then I'll feel better about checking out the group. But, if you guys go, i'd love to hear how it was. My email is [email protected] - please keep me updated!!! and i will do the same for you!

Hi Melissa, looks like we have quite a few twins due at the end of June 2007 in the tampa area....!!! we're freakin out about having 2 babies at once...you already have 2 older ones and an 8 month old....wow, amazing....

SilvrHeart - with IVF, we know exactly when the embryos were implanted and we used a calculator on the internet to figure out the date...it comes out to be the same as using one of those wheels we used in the infertility clinic...we had it figured out to be june 27th...but when we went to the OB, she said it was the 30th, but i think she just couldn't read the wheel right....ugh...

anyhow, it sounds like you've had your fair share of suffering through the first 11 weeks...i hope things smooth out for you and you can enjoy the next two trimesters....why did you have ultrasounds so early??? my wife has not been able to work...she has to stand up all day at work, and she just hasn't not been able to get out of the house...the morning sickness and now sciatic pain are just too bad at this point...she's hoping to go back part time for a bit if the pain ever goes away....

i will keep you posted on how things go with the group this weekend...they really seem like a fun group of people.....

so, have you started to 'show' yet...my wife is starting to pooch out a bit...it is so cute...amazing how different a twin pregnancy is....you normally woulnd't be showing by the 11th week....

Hi Brian and All twin families in Tampa!

Here are some experiences we have had with our twins and doctors.
When I found out we are having twins, I was going to Woman's Group office (offices on Amberly Dr and MLK). I didnt see any reason to change, everything was going good. In september we got bad news in after stage 2 sono, they told us our babies have TTTS. At that time we heard about Dr. Quintero and that he is expert in this issue. He examined our boys and thank God the situation had gone better in one weekend.(We were told on friday we would need surgery right away.)
That was a miracle and we thank God for that. Well we have been going to U/S in TGH still very often because the babies still had discordance in amniotic fluid. So we have seen Dr. Quintero in TGH often. I really like him. He knows what he's doing and he always asks if we have any questions. And I like that that he is positive and realistic at the same time. So I can recommend him from all my heart. He is not my OB but sometimes I feel like he is because my OBs in Woman's group ask me: "what did Dr. Quintero say?" So also the other doctors respect him. At womans group I like to see Dr. Wahba. She knows Dr. Quintero and she has been also very good. Some other doctors in Woman's group have been little unsecure with me (I feel so) because of our special situation...
I'm going to deliver in St Joseph's. They have good quality of care and I really like their facilities. You can take a tour in all the hospitals here and see for yourself which one you like. I actually had to spend a half a day yesterday in St. Joe because my OB wanted them to monitor our boys. I really liked the nurses and the whole trip was very positive. Only special thing I know they have in St.Joe is a nursery where you can actually leave your babies to be taken care of if you need to rest. Even though I'm planning to be in good shape after my labor [IMG], it's nice option to have if you need to sleep for couple of hours...

    God bless you all!

Im 12 weeks tomorrow, I already had to buy new bras a whole cup size bigger, and I look right now the same as I did when I was 6 months preg. with my 8 month old. I carry very low, so I know the sciatic pain is driving me crazy, there is no position comfortable. I just started not being quite as sick all day, but im starving all day and if I dont eat every 1 1/2 - 2 hours, then im sick again. I had to spread out my vitamins and folic acid into 3 doses or they come right back up. Keep me posted how you feel. I hope this is going to get better soon....for all of us.

I know what you mean! I am very petite, but I have had a bump since 6 weeks. That bump has only grown. This is my first pregnancy so I have nothing else to compare it to, but I have been wearing "big" and stretchy clothes for a few weeks now. This weekend I broke down and bought a few maternity pants. I'm really wondering HOW it is that no one at work has noticed yet - or maybe they have and have just figured I had put on a few pounds : )

    They'll know soon enough!

  17. TampaTwins

    TampaTwins Member

yep, same thing with my wife..she's very petite too..stretchy pants and she broke down and got a few maternity pants...based on melissa's response, looks like the belly will start getting big FAST....that seems to be the norm with twins...the weird thing is that my wife has not gained any weight since this all started because she has been so sick...have you managed to put on any weight since you've been sick too? the doctor said not to be concerned at this point because lots of women actually lose weight during their first trimester....i guess she'll have to make it up in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters....

so, what are your thoughts on when and how many ultrasounds should be taken at the beginning here? my wife is not going to get an u/s until week 18 and that sounds pretty far away...we don't even see the doctor again until the beginning of january for some bloodwork...and what about genetic testing? not that our doctor even mentioned it or told us about it..... we don't have a family history and are still pretty young, so we're thinking about skipping it all and not getting all freaked out....i've read too many stories of people getting freak out over nothing with those tests...what are your thoughts?

I have now gained about 2 pounds, though it was up and down for awhile. I think my weight has more redistributed itself. What little extra i had on my legs and arms is now gone and sitting on my belly! Last week I upped my Boost consumption to 2 per day and that has helped a little already. Plus I'm starting to slowly get some appetite back. So really, the 2 pounds have come just in the past week.

Too funny - Brian - I just sent you an email re: ultrasounds. it's long but answers your question, i think. Earlier this week I also posted a message titled "U/S Frequency?" that got a lot of good responses you should read.

The jury is kinda out on genetic testing. We ARE having the nuchal translucency test this afternoon b/c it was an extra ultrasound : ) but everything we've read about the accompanying blood tests has freaked us out. We're (relatively) young and totally free of any family history as well, so we are confused. We're going to talk to the doc about it a bit today before we make a final decision.

I had my U/S at 9 weeks 3 days, actually how we found the twins. My periods were all messed up since having my 8 month old so we werent sure of the exact due date. They thought I was 15 weeks, but when they couldnt find the heartbeat, I got the U/S. They called me the next day and talked with me for about 1 hour. Their plan as of now is...OB visit every month until 6 months, U/S at every visit, Level 2 U/S at 16 weeks and again at 24 weeks, AFP blood test at 16 weeks, and anything else that happens to come our way. So far I have been very pleased with my doctors office. My previous OBGYN who delivered my other 3 kids isnt on my insurance anymore, so I was forced to switch, so I went to my sisters doctor. I get to go next Wednesday for my next appt, Im so excited to see them again looking more like babies. I started feeling flutters yesterday.

What is that? What should i expect? (sorry, all this is so new and exciting - I feel like I wake up as a whole new person every day, not sure what to expect!)

Hello all you Tampa Bay twin families! [IMG]
I am on the other side of the bay in St Pete and delivered at Bayfront/ All Childrens with Maternal Fetal Medicine Associates. LOVED them. They are the high risk group for the county. Over in Tampa, I have heard that St Josephs is one of the best places to go. I am sure the other place is good too if recommended. I also have heard a LOT about Dr Quintero. Ladies from all over the country, and from this web site all over the country fly out here to see him.
I am sorry you have aq bad experience with your Brandon DR. I agree that you should follow your gut instincts.
Welcome to the Tampa Bay area and to Twinstuff!!! [IMG] There is a twins club in Tampa. I belong to the St Pete group.

Hey TampaTwins...I'm not from the Tampa area but I wanted to add that I found both my OB's this way..well mostly. From word of mouth first of all. You hear the same name a few times it's generally a good thing, AND, you can call the hospital OB floor and ask the nurses there. They know what goes on behind the scenes and who does what well or not! Sometimes they won't say but if you phrase it correctly, Would you see Dr. Twinsie? OR I have these two doctors I'm thinking of seeing and give them the names and ask them if they could say yay or nay to those options. They usually just can't blatanly give you a name but can say yes, or no to a name you offered. Congratulations on your twins! You are too sweet going on here for your wife! [IMG]

    Hi!!!
I saw Tampa, so I wanted to introduce myself and wish you luck!!! I live in New Tampa, and delivered identical twin boys in May of this year. I had the best OB, so I wanted to pass on the info. I go to Insignia for Women near USF (delivered at University Community). My dr. of choice (in a group of 6 or 7) is Dr. Greenberg. He is the best. My c-section was scheduled on June 1 and I went into labor early and he sent me to the hospital then came over during his lunch (in between appointments) to perform my c-section even though another dr. was at the hospital. Of course I had told him I really wanted him to do it. But he absolutely went out of his way for me. I still call for various things and the office is always willing to help me and answer any questions.

Anyways, you will have such a great time with those babies!!!! Good Luck!!!!!

Hi TampaTwins and welcome!!! [IMG] I'm usually in the first year board, but was here at Expecting checking things out and saw your post. Firstly, congrats to you and your wife on the twins. It is such a wonderful and rewarding experience and you have so much to look forward to. I don't know what group you went to in Brandon, but I used OB/GYN associates. The doc that delivered the twins was Dr. Tara Sosna. Fabulous Doc!!! The reason I chose that practice is they were very close to my work (Reproductice Medicine Group) and they delivered at St. Josephs. I highly recomend delivering there vs. Brandon Regional. Brandon is simply not of the caliber of St. Joes. I unfortunately was admitted at 24 wks 3 days due to PTl and spent the remainder of my pregnancy in the hospital. The staff at St. Joes is top notch and they took the absolute best care of me!!! I still keep in touch with the ladies there. I know it is a bit early for this, but when you are considering pediatricians, Dr. Gabriele Hosemann at pediatric Healthcare Alliance is awesome!!! Anyway, I just wanted to put in my two cents and send you warm wishes for an uneventful pregnancy!! [IMG]

    Hi Cindy,

Thank you so much for your reply. Wow, what a small world. My wife sees Dr. Yeko at the Reproductive Medicine Group, and we had a first time IVF success (with a nasty case of OHSS for 4 weeks, but nonetheless, it worked). We were part of the study group. What a blessing. I will pass this info on to my wife. I have heard nothing but good news about St. Joes, and good/bad stories about Brandon. We were just afraid to have to travel way over to St. Joes so often during a twin pregnancy. It sounds like your doctor was perfect, someone to see regularly in Brandon, but deliver at St. Joes. I want to go and tour both hospitals. I already called Brandon and we can't tour the hospital until January 7th. We need to get a new ob fast, so I'm going to look into your group for sure. Is it a large practice? I'm assuming that you went to St Joes for the ultrasounds and to see a peri?

Laura - thanks for the note on seeing st. joes on discovery health channel....

I just saw your post! Glad you found Twinstuff!!! And look at all the Tampa twins that I don't know!!! Have you told them about TPOTS yet? I'm going to, hope you don't mind! [IMG]

I highly recommend Dr. Riemer that I told you about earlier. My sister was just raving about them again today. Give them a call. I would trust anyone in their practice and they deliver at Brandon or St. Joes Womens. They will also send you to Dr. Quintero's group and you can't get any better than them anywhere in America. That's why people fly in from all over to see them. [IMG]

    Talk to you soon!

    Brian-
You are quite welcome for the reply. I actually recognize your last name, but I can't put a face to you guys. Did you see Dr. Yeko in South Tampa or Brandon? He is SUCH an amazing man and it was a real treat to work with him for 5 years. I am blessed to now be a SAHM, which is fabulous. We definitely had a LONG 67 days in the hospital, but it was so worth it to make it as far as we did with the babies. And, we had no NICU time, thank the lord. I actually did the ultrasounds before being admitted to the hospital at the OB's office. I had one at every appt since we knew from 5 weeks pregnant that it was twins. Dr. Yeko followed me until 10 weeks, then released me to the OB. Dr. Riemer, who is mentioned in the pp, is a part of the group as well. The other docs are Saavedra, Amoroso, and Suarez. I was rounded on daily at the hospital by them all, so I can certainly say they are all great docs. I personally would not go out of my way to see Dr. Amoroso, but that was a personality clash between her and I. Good Luck!!! [IMG]

    Brian,

I was going to tell you in a private email that I would see Dr. Amoroso LAST. I would absolutely trust her in an emergency, but she is a bit abrasive. I love, love, love Dr. Riemer, he has the same strange sense of humor that I do and always looks like he's run a marathon. He delivered Ivey but was not available the day I had the twins. Dr. Suarez is my age and has small children so she totally understands pregnant women! Dr. Saavedra delivered the twins because they moved up my c-section and he was the doctor on hospital duty that day. He is super nice and they are all very knowledgeable.

    Cindy,

Email me, I'll definitely send you info on TPOTS.

    Hi Cindy,

We saw Dr. Yeko at the Brandon office, then we were transferred up to the North Tampa office once the IVF process started. Dr. Yeko was a great doctor with a great personality. Actually, all of the doctors and nurses were wonderful there. You are certainly an inspiration to my wife (i showed her your post about being in the hospital for 67 days and no nicu time).

This message board is proving to be so helpful. The president of t-pots (above post) told me about this forum. If you don't know anything about t-pots, I would highly recommend them. They are a wonderful group of parents with twins and supertwins in the area.

My wife and I are going to check out the ob/gyn associates group for sure. We love the fact that we can go to either brandon or st. joes when the time comes. Wendy (from t-pots) recommended them as well.

    thank you so much,
    brian

    Hi Brian-
Wow!! it is a small world, huh? I worked at the Brandon office for Dr. Yeko, but when I originally started there 5 years ago, I worked at the North Tampa office. The IVF support team ladies are really great!! Lynn, Renee, Cathy and Lee, the study coordinator. It is really a great group of docs. And yes, this forum is really great. I found it after already delivering and rely on it so much for answers. Everyone here is always so quick to lend a hand and offer advice. Definitely check out the OB group Wendy and I were discussing. They are right around the corner from RMG, so if that office was convenient for ya'll, this will be too!! Best of luck to the both of you and please tell your wife to hang in there. All of the unpleasantness of the first months of pregnancy will go away and then you will have 2 precious babies to look forward to!! [IMG] [IMG]
