Amniotic Fluid Gap Between Fraternal Twins?

I am 29 1/2 weeks pregnant with fraternal twins. The growth until now between the two has been equal (both weight -and- amniotic fluid levels). However, when I had a sonogram yesterday, the scan showed a gap between the amniotic fluid levels between the 2 babies. In addition, my cervix shortened to 2.5cm which my doctor thinks is a result of the excess fluid of the baby with more fluid pushing on my abdomen. She is refering me to a perinatologist. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Hi, I think that I was maybe 26 wks. when Baby A fluid levels were high and and I was diagnosed as being polyhydramnios (too much fluid).Baby B was o.k. they like the levels to be I forget..but I think it is between 2-8 or 4-8 anything lower than that is called oligohydramnios (too low).Well when they 1st noticed a problem with the fluid...A's fluid was 9. something...so what they did was monitor me closely..I came to see my specialist every 2 weeks instead of every 4 weeks. The next visit the fluid had rocketed up to 10.something..but the specialist said that as long as the fluid did not harm the baby my only problem probably would be being in a lot of discomfort.Instead of me feeling like I was carrying twins I would look and feel like I was carrying triplets. What they did was monitor closely to make sure that the babies bladder, kidneys, heart and other major organs was functioning correctly and that the fluid did not get in or interfere with their functioning.Baby A's fluid had got up to as high as 12.something..and the sonographers always had this look of concern on their face when measuring his fluid.I think that I was around maybe 31 or 32 wks. when I went back in and they were very shock to see that the levels had normalized. Both of my babies fluid levels are now 5.7...very normal. When ever they see high fluid levels in the sac the 1st thing that they want to find out is if the mother has gestational diabetes.Because they say that may be the cause...there are other factors that may cause the levels to be high and then sometimes they just simply don't know why the levels are high...which was my case .I tested for GD and I passed and did not have it so they ruled that out. I did alot of research on polyhydramnios and read that sometimes around 32 weeks that the levels normalize on their own.Good Luck and I hope that my information helped.

At my 30 week visit (I was being seen by a peri and an OB so I had visits up until that point every 2 weeks) We discovered that my baby A had not grown in 2 weeks AND her fluid level was low. from that point on I was seen twice a week and put on bedrest. At every visit I knew that if her fluid level got any lower, they would take them that day. luckily bedrest worked for us and we made it until 38weeks 4 days.

I wish you the very best.

Thank you so much. I saw the peri yesterday and Baby A's fluid is between 9-11 (high) and Baby B is 5.7 (normal). We were thrilled to hear that she wasn't concerned about the excess fluid because everything else was okay (all organs functioning properly, both babies are good weight, etc). She said sometimes this kind of imbalance happens with twins and they don't know exactly why, so just watch it closely. At this point, I'm almost 30 weeks, she is recommending a sonogram once a week and non-stress test twice weekly.
