Just wanted to post my blog for those of you who are struggling with IUGR babies. I don't visit this board often anymore because it makes me tear up because I missed so much of my pregnancy because we had to deliver early. But I though it might help if you saw a success story. My boys were born 28wks 6days due to IUGR in Baby B (That's my son Evan) and they are now 5 months old. Evan came home at 3lbs 8oz with no problems other than size and Cameron at 6lbs 4oz on oxygen but he's off that as of this week. They grow ladies! Just hang in there!

Feel free to ask me anything: http://taylo2babies.blogspot.com/

Ok, I am not up to par with terms and abbreviations. What does "IUGR" stand for?

congrats, they look very healthy, happy and adorable.

My son Jake was born at 3lbs 8 ounces at 36 weeks, so I know how tiny that can be :)

We always knew that Evan (Baby B) had catching up to do from the first time we even saw that there were two babies. His amniotic sac was half the size of his brother's. Then that evened out a bit around 17 weeks, but there was still a size difference. We had u/s visits every three weeks then. At 20weeks they monitored because the discrepancy in their sizes was getting bigger and bigger. At 22 weeks they said that we could have an amnio but that would probably not show any results because they were fairly certain there was problems with the blood flow in the umbilical or placenta. We were then being monitored once a week. We decided not to do the amnio thankfully because they were right, it would not have given us any useful results. At 24 weeks the babies were viable (meaning 50/50 chance of survival outside the womb without too many major complications) and that we could do moderate bed rest with a high protein diet to bulk the babies up. At that point we were monitored every 3 days for blood flow in the umbilical. At 26weeks I was in the hospital for 24 hour monitoring. and at 28wks 6days we delivered.

Throughout the pregnancy everything else was normal. The only thing I though was odd was that I could rarely feel Evan kick and move, but I chalked it up to his being so little and the placenta was in the way of his kicks. I felt nothing out of the ordinary with this pregnancy and was told I never would have felt Evan going into distress until after it was too late, hence the very careful monitoring. In the end it was the best then ever to see my Perineonatologist-Maternal Fetal Medicine high risk specialist and he truly saved my boys lives. I was able to move around, do things normally but needed to be on the couch or in the bed the majority of the time so that I wasn't burning too many calories for myself. I tried to eat a 3000 calorie high protein diet (tried is the operative word, more power to anyone who can actually do it!!) and did as much to get ready for preemies as possible. I knew we'd deliver early, it was just a matter of when.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
