Does anyone have any sure fire ways to avoid them?  I bet I got it because I was on an antibiotic, but I had heard that if you iced it when you first realize it is coming it doesn't really manifest itself.  It has worked for me in the past but I've had it for just about a week now and it is horrible.

    Any suggestions?

Is it a cold sore or a canker sore (inside your mouth)? If it's the latter, Remrandt makes a canker sore prevention toothpaste that both prevents and lessens length. I used to have them constantly, and now I never get them.

Ooooh, sorry.  I'll be watching this post because I get them, too.  I have never really found a way to avoid them completely.  If I put some cold sore medicine on it as soon as I feel the tingle I can reduce the severity of the outbreak, but it always comes.  I have been lucky and have only been getting them up my nose (which totally hurts but nobody can see them so it's not as bad); I just got one below my lip and the remnants are still there after 3 weeks!

    Hope yours clears up soon!

I hardly get them, so I can't personally attest to this working but my husband and best friend both get them frequently (or used to) they both have said taking a Lysine supplement has helped.  I hope yours goes away soon

Lysine, and also avoid the sun. UV light helps them get started. And they're more likely near your period, too.

What if you are a 7 year old boy??? Nicholas gets them(only child thankfully), and I'd say at least twice a year. Not horrible, but still.

yeah, not canker.  I feel as if I have a bullseye on my face.  Thanks!  It opens up EVERY time I eat.  :(

It's actually a form of herpes, so if you get a Valtrex prescription from your doctor just for a few days it will clear right up.

Acylovir. If you get them more than about 3 times a year or they stick around forever.
