I'm trying not to freak out, but here I am sitting at my desk crying. The OB just called. They want me to go in for a 2D ultrasound. When we had our appointment last week, Ziggy was 1 lb 8 oz and Zuzu was 1 lb 4 oz. So they'd rather be safe and make sure everything is ok.

Anyone have this? What would they be looking for? They're di/di twins... I'm 25 weeks...

Trying to remain calm enough... but I worry. I love my little guys.

Mine have been different sizes and I do go to a specialist. At 22 weeks they were 14oz and 16oz and just last week at 28 weeks they were 2lb 4oz and 2lbs 8oz. I was told that just like in different pregnancies babies can grow at different rates. I think they like them to be no more than 20% different in weight. Try not to worry, look at it as an opportunity to see them more often.

I'm so sorry, how scary for you. Sending good vibes that everything is okay!

I'm a bit confused, though... the doc is sending you to MFM because your babies are 4 oz different? I don't know off the top of my head what the normal weight range should be for 25 weeks, are they worried they are too small? Because 4 oz difference is not much, especially when you factor in the unreliability of those weight estimates (how many women of singletons have been told they needed a C-section because their baby was too big, only to deliver a 7-pounder!).

My twins are di/di, most likely fraternal (I was on meds and released two eggs that cycle), and my kiddos have always varied a bit in size. The OB said you basically look at fraternals as two separate pregnancies, and as long as both are in the normal size range, it's okay if they are a bit different.

Good luck and keep us posted!

don't stress, MFM's are an awesome team member to have in your corner. they go WAY beyond regular ob's and are not scary at all. in fact, when i found out i was having twins, i chose a MFM as my primary ob, i had worked with her in the past and knew she was practically a genius! she did put the pieces of the puzzle together and diagnose me with MTHFR, and it basically saved my girls' lives once i was being treated for it with daily shots of blood thinners. i'm not trying to scare you at all, just trying to reassure you that weight difference is not huge and remember, each baby is him/her own self and grows at their own rate. they just happen to be sharing a uterus. you will love the MFM!

Dont worry. You're going to be ok. When my OB sent me to high risk specialist. I was freaked out too. At 23w4d, my boy was 1 oz heavier then my girl. at 27w4d, my girl was 2 oz ahead of the boy. My docs didnt seem worried, but happy.

4 oz. doesn't sound like a lot to me either, just like all full term babies are not the same weight, they aren't exactly the same weight in utero. I think a MFM is a great addition to a multiples team and you will enjoy getting an extra peek at the babies and more in depth info on their development!

Thank you all. My husband's reaction was "talk to your twin moms." It will be a long week, but its better to be safe. Will let you know once I see the little guys.

My ob sent all the twin moms over to the MFM routinely even without a problem at all. So I don't think it would take much for most ob/gyns to refer their twin moms over. Don't worry yet!

 I am sorry you are worrying about this. I was sent to one by my OB when we discovered it was twins and for no other reason besides I was having twins. I loved going to it, my insurance covered u/s from them at every visit and would only cover the 20w one with my OB. Try not to worry, lots of twin Moms see them.

Same here. I was sent to one because I was having twins. I'm sorry you are worried. Please try and not worry to much about it. I know that is easier said then done, but it won't do you any good right now. Just think that you'll get to see your little bundles on u/s again. (and my MFM had a much better u/s machine then my OB)

I had an ultrasound around 24 weeks and our twins had a 30% size difference. Then by 28 weeks they were 2 pound 10 ounces and 2 pounds 12 ounces and the doctors thought that that size difference was perfectly normal.. Even at the 24 week ultrasound they weren't worried because both were within normal range..

Yep, I was only sent to one because I was having twins.

I had my boys at 29 weeks with no signs of preterm labor. Wyatt was 2lbs,10oz and Riley was 2lbs, 15oz so there was a 5 oz difference (there was a difference like that the whole pregnancy too) and they never seemed concerned.

I'm sure they just wanna keep an eye on you because of the potential risks

I totally agree with what the other ladies have said. The MFM will be a good thing & will give you reassurance. You'll get to see your babies more and another nice perk: the u/s machine is 4D! I had a 4D u/s done every 2 weeks (complete with DVDs and pics) and my insurance covered it. I know it's hard, but try not to worry.
