I just got back from my 8 week appointment. THe good news is that both baby's heart-rates are great (Baby A 156 BPM; Baby B 160 BPM) and they are both measuring well (Baby A 16.9; Baby B 14.8). However, my doctor is sending me to a high-risk Maternal Fetal Associates doctor because Baby B's yolk sac is significantly smaller than Baby A's. Baby A's sac measured 42.2 while Baby B's measured 24.1...

I'm very worried about Baby B. The doctor seemed to imply that there was a 50/50 chance of survival. However he did say b/c the heartbeat was strong, that was a positive that would hopefully help it.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I'm so nervous. I have my high-risk appointment on Thursday....

From 6.5 weeks to 12 weeks our baby B's sack was about half the size. We now have very active 21 month olds. The Dr. did keep a very close eye on them, with ultrasounds every 2 weeks.

Oh I'm so glad to hear someone say that and have a good outcome of it! I hope that mine is as good as yours! Did your smaller sac eventually grow? Or was it a concern since the very beginning? Was there anything you could do to help?

I don't know yet about how closely I'll be monitored, but they are sending me to a high-risk specialist (Perinatologist) so I'm assuming that's what they'll be doing for me. My nurse in fertility told me that they will scare the life out of me, but don't worry that everything they tell me they tell everyone - they just want to prepare you for the worst. My appointment is on Thursday.

Around 12 weeks they were both the same size. There was nothing I could do

My Dr. wanted to discuss and try to give me the whole spill about possible losing one. I told him I didn't want any negative energy, and only wanted positive thoughts.

Good Luck on your appt Thurs

Well, it was alright. The baby is still OK so that's at least good news. The doctor did all kinds of measurements on the sac and the baby... Apparently the smaller sac is a week behind (in size) than the other sac, which is a normal size. The good news is that the baby in the small sac is measuring (size) within normal range and has a very strong heartbeat. And, there is amniotic fluid in the sac, not a ton, but enough of it for him to survive now.

He couldn't really make any predictions as to which way it would go... I got the sense that it's 50/50 on whether or not that twin will survive. I have to go back on the 27th. He said at that time he should be able to give me an idea of whether that baby is going to make it or not. He is hoping that the size of his sac eventually catches up to the other.

So I hope that this twin makes it, I would love nothing more than to have twins. This is my only opportunity to have 2 children. I had to do IVF to get pregnant with these babies, and to have two would be such a blessing. I don't see myself ever going through IVF again.

So far my baby B has always been measuring smaller in terms of growth, and has a much smaller sac. At 10 weeks the docs were really worried about B because the sac was basically shrink-wrapped around the fetus, but three weeks later things looked much better. I'm getting ultrasounds every 2 weeks for the duration. It's nerve-wracking but I think a "50/50 chance" is a bit of an extreme prognosis!

Having a size discrepancy between the sacs is very common. My cousin, whose twins are now 2.5 years, always had a sac discrepancy throughout her pregnancy. Try not to get too worked up about, it's something to make sure the doctors are keeping an eye on but at this point there is nothing you can do - think positive!

Yeah my sac sizes were diff at my 11 week u/s when I first found out I was having twins (i didnt go to the dr. until then).
Here is a pic @ 11 weeks......however I think the growth of the babies was within days apart. Anyway all is good at 30 weeks so hopefully everything turns out okay for you!

All your comments are very encouraging - thank you! My babies are measuring the same size, just that one sac is smaller. I go back on the 27th and hopefully all will be okay. The doctor said that on the 27th he should be able to tell the fate of Baby B (in the small sac). I didn't realize this was a common thing with twins. I am just so nervous... I am dying to buy a book on expecting twins but I don't want to "jinx" anything until I know for sure Baby B is okay. I'm really supersticious.

Also, i am already showing at 9 weeks. My sister-in-law is also 9 weeks pregnant w/a singleton and you can't tell at all she's expecting. But with me, it's obvious. I am already in some maternity clothes and wearing belly-bands around my pants to make them fit better. I hope that is a good sign!
