I am still trying to figure out mine. I think they look different, but they have the same blood type, hair and eyes and are always the same size. (Even though they are almost 20 lbs at 6 months.)

I keep hearing identical twins can look different. Can I see yours??

Here is a pic of my girls, I chose one tha shows some of thier differences. They are ID, I had one placenta and I had a DNA test don after they were born. My girls have the same nose, eyes, mouth, and ears, but their faces are shaped different.

    both girls

BTW: you should post a pic so we all can see and let you know what we think ;)

They only look different to you because you are the mothers.... :p

My boys look different to me, but no one else can seem to tell them apart! So far all of the IDs posted here look identical to me :) .

Get them tested! I think my girls look quite different now (although they were so identical at first I couldn't tell them apart for 5 months!) and they are identical. They have a different shape to their heads which affects how their features look on their faces and one tends to be a little heavier than the other. I'm amazed when people still think they look alike.

In your ticker, I think your girls look fairly different but it could just be the angle and lighting highlighting otherwise small differences.

They look more alike in photos, but in "real life"you can really see the size difference and the shape of their heads. Also, although their features are the same, they use them in different ways. Like they smile a little differently etc.

Hey! Mine are ID. But as you can see, they do look very different. I read in this book about twins that mentioned a process called "Iyonization" or something like that. Anyway, it basically says that all little girls get an X chromosome from mom & one from dad. When the egg implants into the uterus, one of those x chromosomes becomes inactive. So their is no guarantee that the same x chrom becomes inactive in each egg after it splits. SO for ex with my girls, Kaylee looks like her dad & Sarah looks like me. Kaylee's X chrom from me is probably inactive, and Chad's is probably inactive in Sarah making her look more like me. I know this sounds a little confusing, but I asked my OB about it & he said that I this does happen sometimes with ID girls.

    Just food for thought!

Mine are id, but they look different b/c their faces are different shapes. When people see them together they say they can tell a difference, but that they can also tell they are id.

(Not sure if I added this picture correctly - it's the first time I've posted a pic.)

I may win this contest...my girls were diagnosed with TTTS and were delivered at 32 weeks. They are 2 lbs apart, have totally different complexions, hair AND eye color- baby blues and dark chocolate brown. I could rationalize the rest of it away, but the eye color has got me totally doubting. At this point I just tell people they're fraternal (strangers) rather than go into "lyonization" and all the other theories. I am kind of thinking the TTTS was misdiagnosed and that they are fraternal.

I thought it was impossible for ID twins to have different eye colors....shades of the same color maybe, but completely different?

    Hi,

U/S specialists said that my twin sons are identical, but they have some differences in appearance, so I had them tested through Proactive Genetics to make sure of this (I felt weird telling people that they were identical because they looked different). They are, in fact, identical. Like yours, mine have the same blood type. However, mine have always had a 1 to 2 lb difference between them. The closer the smaller one gets to the bigger one, the more alike they look. There's an article about how identicals can look different. I'd bet money that yours are fraternal and misdiagnosed with TTTS from growth discordance due to overlapping placentas.

Everyone else's photos look like identicals to me. Like the others, mine look very different to me but most everyone else struggles to tell them apart. I can see a difference in their head shape, cheeks, and Trent has a birthmark on his side.

Oh, and about the eyecolor thing -- I've read that it is possible but rare (just like it's possible for one person to have two different colored eyes).

ETA: We had ours DNA tested because they look so different to us that we were sure they were fraternal until 5 months of age.

I thought all those twins looked identical to me...even the girls with diff. hair lengths. I think it is because you are the mommy and you notice things others do not. Of my two, I have a blondie and brunette...you can tell them apart by everything from their head shape to fingers. If my first son had been born with one of my twins we would have thought identical, though...

I agree. I don't see any of these differences that the moms are pointing out.

We thought ours were fraternal, but had the DNA test done, and were surprised to find out that they are identical! Their head shapes are different, and that affects their features some, as I've seen some others of you mention.

They are 2 months old today! Wow! I love how much they are starting to smile and coo! Fun times! They have such good dispositions! We are so blessed! :)

I went to school with a guy that had one eye that was blue and the other was hazel. It can happen.

I'd put my money on them being fraternal -- they just don't look ANYTHING alike to me. They have the same nose but different mouths, different eye shapes, different colored eyes, different complexions, different colored hair (and eyebrows) and a HUGELY discordant hair amount. There is usually some difference (my ID's have slightly different eye shapes but it is very slight -- and one has more hair but it's not dramatic -- my donor has about 2/3's what my recipient has.) Is there any way that you can get ahold of the pathology report and see what it says. They should have checked for venous connections to confirm TTTS. They should have also confirmed it was not a fused placenta. I think it is most likely IUGR, not TTTS, that they suffered from. Either way, they are adorable!!!

I have never seen identicals look THAT much different, even though I can usually see significant differences in identical twins. I'd be curious to know if you ever find out for sure. :)
