IVF beta test

Has anyone taken a home pregnancy test the night before their beta, gotten a negative result, and still ended up pregnant? I'm thinking the chances are very slim. But I was looking for a little sliver of hope for my sister. She's 37, had one failed fresh cycle, and is at the end of her second fresh cycle. This is it for them, if it doesn't work. Everything seemed so promising this time. The embryos looked really good, two of the three had no fragmentation (last time they were all pretty fragmented). But it's the night before her beta, she took a test and it was negative. I can't help but think there's no chance now. Can someone tell me they've had the same thing happen, but still ended up pregnant?

And if it doesn't work, what do you even say? I've struggled with infertility too. But I ended up pregnant in the end. I have no idea what to do or say to someone who really feels like this is the end of the road for them. I feel awful.

:-( I'm so sorry. I have a friend who had the opposite... she had a few hpts that came back within the testing period as a negative - no double lines, but then several hours later it was a very faint line. Her beta ended up being negative, an hcg number, but low an 8 and two days later it was a 5, it ended in a chemical pregnancy. UGH!

Her clinic did say that there were pregnancies that were achieved with an HCG level of 8 or 9, but the prognosis isn't very favorable.

I hope your sister has better news. Though most pregnancy tests test at a low level these days, and when I cried at the IVF nurse telling me my first IVF was negative she sounded surprised and asked if I'd have any positive pregnancy tests. almost like the hpts are pretty realistic.

Infertility sucks - plain and simple.

Sorry, but from what I've read (in massive amounts of time on IF boards), it's pretty unlikely.

The first time I got pg (it ended in m/c at 8 weeks) I did have a negative HPT the day my period was due. But it was a Clomid cycle (not IUI/IVF), so my doctor didn't do a beta right away. I didn't even realize I was pregnant until a week later. As far as I know, everything was normal until 6-8 weeks or so (i.e., it wasn't a chemical pregnancy). So the fact that it ended in m/c doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the negative HPT.

I also had two positive HPTs the night before a beta. One was an IUI cycle and turned out to be a chemical pg -- the other was the twins (which was a much darker positive).

In general, I'd think if there's enough hcg in her system to be a viable pregnancy, it's probably enough to register on an HPT.

As far as what to say -- I don't know. It's hard for me to remember what it felt like to think we might never be able to have kids (though I do remember how infuriating it was that my sister kept getting pg without even trying :gah: ). I think you might just need to give her a lot of space.

Thanks for the responses. It's what we all expected, negative. It's hard because I don't know anyone personally that's dealt with infertility and ended up not getting pregnant eventually. I remember my anger at people who had no problems getting pregnant and who would never understand what it's like. But now she's in a new category than I was in, someone who knows what infertility is like, explored and tried all their options, and ended up not having kids in the end. I was 29 and she is 37 and financially and emotionally maxed out. I'm so sad for her. Infertility is so unfair. There are so many crappy parents out there who got pregnant by accident. It just makes no sense.

 to your sister. I have a friend who went through something similar. It was very difficult for our friendship after I got pregnant on my second IVF cycle.

:grouphug: Infertility is a awful. We had infertility and it is heartbreaking!

My SIL was in that category. They were not successful at having biological children, so they pursued adopting. They now have two sisters (private adoptions from birth) that are two years apart in age.
