Hi All, More drama from my gang! I understand these things go in threes, so hopefully this is it for us for awhile!!

My poor Teddy was sparring at TKD the other night and tried to block a roundhouse kick with his arm in just the wrong way. Between the other kid's force kicking and Teddy's force blocking...well, the arm didn't stand a chance. :( This is why we wear wrist protection boys and girls! :umm:

He's been in a short splint for 24 hours and we saw the orthopedic specialist today who announced that not only did he have a buckle fracture in his wrist but had fractured his radius on three sides. Teddy has to wear a long arm cast for 2-3 weeks to keep the limb completely immobilized and then a short cast for another 3-6 weeks after that! Doctor said no sports or gym for about 3 months!!! :icon_eek: MY poor boy!

So, he kept them laughing with his wacky sense of humour, but this is a major cast and a major hassle. We go on vacation in 3 weeks and he began to realize what that could mean (no swimming, no sailing, no rock climbing,e tc) which really took the wind out of his sails, especially as the pain began to kick in again....

But, I talked to the doctor about a waterproof cast for the vacation (at least he could swim) and the doc said he'd do his best, as long as Edward is ready for the short cast by then. ...and after an ibuprofen for the pain and headache, and a McFlurry for the sadness, here was my boy back to his usual cheerful self again!!

The moral of the story: remind your children to wear all proper pads, helmets and protection during sports! Even with pads, accidents can occur, but it's nicer if we can minimize them!

Oh man Renee! That just stinks for everyone! Right before vacation!! I think he's earned at least 2 McFlurries!!

Poor thing! that's a long to be out of sports! I hope he heals quickly and gets his waterproof cast before vacation!!!!!

Ouch ouch ouch!!! I hope it's healed enough that he can at least go swimming!! Are all of your boys in TKD?

Yes, but the younger two just started last year. My girls also did TKD. Jessie got her black belt at the same time that Jack did (1st dan), but now she isn't training at TKD because she is doing cross country, soccer and long-distance running. Kiki got to brown belt (started a year after J&J) before we left Ohio, and now she is training at college and is a blue belt in karate (so she's brown in TKD, blue in karate).

The whole family is into it...and all with a peace-loving, non-combat-loving, non-sporty mom! LOL!!!

Ouch -- poor Teddy! I hope he heals quickly and will be ready for the short cast for vacation. We spent a summer with one son in a cast a few years ago and those waterproof casts are wonderful.

Tyler has 2 new owies. Nothing like a broken arm though. He was bringing his foot up to do an axe kick on a board, got to close to the board and almost ripped his toenail off. So the next day he was doing elbow strikes and now has a really nasty goose egg bruise on his forearm.

    How is Teddy doing?

OWWWWW poor Tyler! Ow poor toenail! :( A bruise or a fracture is bad, but I do think a ripped nail is more painful! :icon_eek:

Teddy is doing well....and his cast has become a work of art! ;)

Jack and Kenny are at a tournament today in a neighboring town. Jack took first in black belt form.

It's Kenny's first tournament so Scott has the camera. I hope he remembers to take a few pictures!

Cathy, serious injuries are not common. Teddy's was a total fluke. I hope your kids enjoy TKD! I think it is a really great all-round sport (ie both for physical and mental fitness and focus).

    I understand how he feels...
I got my left arm broken THREE times!!!

Once-I still remember... I broke my tooth, too
Twice-Complete break, not fracture...Duration of my summer., and directly after my first one. Seriously, I broke it in the HOSPITAL after recovering from the first one!!!
Thrice-Merry Christmas to me <_< Yes, I had it on for Christmas.

Mind you, all three were full breaks...
First one required pins, so now I have a permanent scar on my wrist
First cast was on for 6 months.

My dearest regards, it's not fun..

Hi Rachel! Don't worry, serious injuries are uncommon! All five of my kids have taken Martial Arts for many years. I've got a 2nd dan black belt, a 1st dan black belt, a brown belt (she is also a karate blue belt) , an orange belt and a green belt. They've all sparred for years. Out of all that, Teddy's was the only serious injury, thank goodness!

It is true that smaller injuries (still painful!) like broken toes and fingers or torn toenails (ask Donita's Tyler or my Kiki!) are a little more common, but with proper protection and lots of practice of technique, these can be kept to minimum, too. Jess broke her hand doing something really stupid (practicing a hammerfist on a kicking post...um, that's a steel bar in the middle there!) and broke a toe twice sparring without her gear on ( :umm: ). Jack broke a toe doing the same thing. All of those injuries were preventable with the proper protective gear and a little common sense (lol).

I hope your son enjoys TKD! I think it is wonderful sport for all-round conditioning and really great for building confidence and leadership skills!
