Omeprazole just stops working?

So when DD and DS were a month old they were put on ranitidine (zantac?) for their reflux. It didn't help and so we moved on to omeprazole and they've been on it for a while now. Maybe 4 months or so. It's an adult capsule so we have to break it open and mix it with a spoon of baby food to get them to take it. The last week they've been spitting up like crazy and doing this thing where they shudder and swallow a lot. I'm assuming the omeprazole isn't working anymore. Should I schedule an appointment to get their meds changed? Shouldn't they have outgrown the reflux issue by now? They are 9 months.

ETA: DD has been flat out refusing to drink bottles since this started back up. Normally they feed their bottles to themselves, but I've even been trying to hold her to feed her a bottle and she will yank it away and push it down and nearly freak out if you try to force her to drink it.

Make an appointment assp. It might be reflux out of control . If so ask 4 prevacid.but its weird, they should grow out of reflux totally or at least keep it under control at 9 months. Definitely get them check out.

Do you think it might be stomach bugs? Our pedi said if kids got reflux, when they get stomach bugs, reflux is back. Hope your los feel better soon!

I'm actually kind of hoping it is a stomach bug. I called the pedi's office and since they close early today they couldn't see them. But they did say that there is a stomach virus going around. They are going to go in and be seen on Monday. So we'll see!

It could be reflux - our boys weren't able to come off their meds until almost a year. I would definitely talk to the pedi.

We just started zantac 2 days ago and are praying it works for our DS who spits up out his nose and mouth and just cries. Today so far has been great.. he nursed burped, played, nursed and went to sleep. I hope this means the meds are working! Good luck with your LOS.. it is so hard when it all comes back up.

we were on zantac for a few weeks and at first it worked but then it stopped. Apparently this happens quite often with it, in fact in can trigger the reflux to be a little worse. I don't have a lot of experience with omeprazole b/c most often I have seen that people get put on prevacid after zantac fails. That's my own personal experience. It worked AMAZINGLY for us. They made a compound formula for my kids that tasted like marshmallows and bananas. My son was on it until about 9.5 months and DD was off around 5-6 months. Some kids have reflux that doesn't resolve until past 1 year, so it is definately a possibility. Check it out with your doc.

    Good luck

Prevacid is what the pedi wanted to put them on the last time but our insurance said "no" until we tried the omeprazole first. So I'm hoping that they will switch them to prevacid this time. They go in next week to get checked out.

Gosh I hate those insurance companies. It happened to us too. Our pedi knew nothing worked but prevacid but she prescribed zantac, prisolec, then prevacid but insurance denied, then she had to give us nexium which we bought but we didn't give my dd we paid a full month of prevacid for her. However we had to buy nexium so we could tell insurance that it didn't work.wth our babies aren't lab rats.finally they accepted to pay and Michelle outgrew it and didn't need it anymore.I rather pay for it. I'd not give my kid med which I knew wouldn't work just to make those evil insurance copanies happy.

We still have like 15 prevacid.I don't know if its illegal to give those away, but she no longer needs it.I'm so sorry for those babies needs it but can't have it though

There is a generic form of prevacid in the soluble form. It is much cheaper and one doesn't have to get approval from the insurance companies. My DS is 14 months and back on it. We had stopped it, but he started throwing up. The specialist told us that in some cases reflux can take up to 2 years to resolve. Not to be a downer, but I have been in this boat for 12 months and it isn't fun. The biggest thing is don't force if your DD won't take it, it makes for bigger problems down the road, like our DS. It is at a point where spoon feeding his milk is my only option. We are taking them off the bottle and the sippy cup doesn't work for him either. He just doesn't like eating so feeding overall is hard. If you can just give her smaller bottles more frequently (I know like we have loads of time), but I wish I had tried that. Hope whatever it is that it is a quick recovery.

Omeprazole (Prilosec) is actually better for severe reflux than other meds. This is what our GI has told us, as did the NICU Dr's that diagnosed them. They probably need their dosage to be increased. As weight increases their meds need adjusted. That's why most pedi GI's will want to see your child often. Our insurance denied Previcid also. But Prilosec worked just fine. My boys didn't "outgrow" their reflux until AFTER 3, and that was just Jesse. Joshua still has problems. I hope it's just a dosing issue. But if not, I hope you can find a med that works for them.

Edited to add: you may want to consider having them tested for food allergies also. Reflux can rear it's ugly head from a food "sensitivity" or allergy. Have you been adding new foods to their diet? I assume they are still taking in new foods since they are only 9 months.
