    Hey all!

Okay so we had an ultrasound this past Wednesday and the tech showed us where the twins looked like they were sharing the same placenta. And when we went to our follow up appointment this morning, the doc asked when I was going to see the high risk doc. When I told her on Jan 5th she was like "oh no no, that's too long" so she is setting me up for an 'asap appointment' with a different doctor she works with. When my DH and I got alarmed over this she explained that the u/s tech thought initially that the babies were in 2 separate sacs on the very first u/s we had at 6 weeks. But now it appears as though they are each in their own sac but with a larger sac containing both babies.

I am UTTERLY confused. What on earth does that mean?

Maybe they're concerned that they're mo/mo twins- meaning they're sharing an amniotic sac as well as a placenta? These types of twins are pretty rare and can be difficult to diagnosis. They thought my boys were mo/mo in the beginning but were able to find the separating membrane with a higher resolution ultrasound. The membrane was only ever visible on this u/s machine- my ob's machine could never pick it up. Good luck and keep us posted!

Congratulations on your twin pregnancy! It sounds like you are having mono-di twins, which are identical. It is always good to be monitored by a specialist to be on the safe side. I'm sure someone will weigh in with more info. GL and congrats again!

From what I'm gathering it sounds like you're having mono-di twins which means they're identical. Mono-dis can be very high risk and require frequent monitoring so it's good that your doc picked up on that.

The 2 inner sacs are where the amniotic fluid is for each baby. The outer sac is the placenta which means they're sharing it, thus making it riskier.

    Congrats on your twins!

Thanks everyone for all your answers! We're still waiting to hear back from the doc on when we will go this week for the ultrasound at the Peri's office. I'll let you guys know what the final word is! :)

    Yep! What she said! :)

THAT is why I posted what I did to your other thread.

They are mono di twins. They have their own amniotic sacs but share a chorion (outer sac) and placenta.

You are high risk, and do need to be monitored frequently. That is why I was confused when your u/s doc didn't know you were having mono di twins.

GL and it's a good thing you are seeing one sooner than that. I am always amazed at how casually some doctors see twins sharing a placenta. While it's usually okay, sometimes it isn't and you NEED to be watched closely.

:) Congrats on your identical twins!

You're having mono-di twins :) I was living in a small town when I found out I was having twins (at 9 weeks) and wasn't monitored by a high risk doc until I was 21 weeks. I had NO idea the risks of having mono di twins until I moved. Lucky for me, my pregnancy went uncomplicated. It's always best to get monitored as early as possible. Good luck with your pregnancy :)
