My boys now say, "Ummmm" all the time because when I am racking my brain for a new song, I say, "Ummmm"

    Here are some I sing:

    You are my Sunshine
    What a wonderful world
    The Farmer and the Dell
    ABC song
    Hush Little Baby
    This Little Piggy
Take me out to the Ball Game (if the Cubs dont win its a shame!)
    Old MacDonald
Barney- I love you and Brushing my Teeth
    Row, Row, Row your Boat
    Mary had a little lamb

What are some of your favorites??

We watch YouTube a lot, and we really like Tom Jones- "What's New ***** Cat", Hamster Dance, Muppet Show "Manamana" and loads of CARS the Movie soundtrack songs. I know they are not the traditional songs to sing but boy is it funny to watch them singing "What's New Pussycat, Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa"

we have this thing called the fridge dj bt leap frog. so the songs from it get sung all the time!! so in addition to traditional songs we sing:

bye bye birdy - the girls love it because they can "sing" it (they say bye bye!)
    it goes like this:

One little birdy sitting way up high, one said goodbye and flew into the sky
    bye bye birdy bye bye

it keeps on like that until 5 birdies then it says

5 little birdies sitting way up high and as they flew by I think I heard them cry bye bye, bye bye birdie bye bye

and the other one from the fridge dj that they love is
every single day of the week

every single day of the week I like to read a book
    thats Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday

every single night of the week I go to bed and sleep
    Mon,tues,Wed Thurs,Fri,Sat, Sun
and when I wake up - it's the very next day of the week

There's a song by Colbie Caillat that dd just loves called "Capri" ..... it's so sweet & about a lady who's pg with a little girl. We listen to it in the car & when it's over dd will say "do it again!" :)

    they also love:

    twinkle twinkle
    rockabye baby

and a few oddball songs...probably nobody else has heard of them ;)

    "down in the valley
    valley so low
    hang your head over
    hear the wind blow
    hear the wind blow, love
    hear the wind blow
    hand your head over
    hear the wind blow

    roses love sunshine
    violets love dew
    angels in heaven
    know i love you
    know i love you, dear,
    know i love you
    angels in heaven
    know i love you"

    "oh genevieve
    sweet genevieve
the days may come, the days may go
    but still the hands
    of memory weave
the blissful dreams of long ago"

"when at night i go to sleep
    fourteen angels watch do keep
    to, to whom ti given
to, to lead and guide my steps to heaven"

oh, we also like to sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow somtimes too

    For playtime, they love
    the itsy bitsy spider
    twinkle twinkle little star
    Swing low, sweet chariot

    For bedtime;
Scarlet Ribbons (by the Kingston Trio)
    The Sweetheart Tree
    Somewhere Over the Rainbow
    Hi Lili Hi Lo
    O Willow Waly
    Barbara Allen

and some softer songs from movies; I love the movie the Slipper and the Rose and there are 2 or 3 beautiful slower songs on the soundtrack. Also, from the Lord of the Rings, the song Pippin sings in the third movie before the war starts... that's my favorite. You can listen to it here.

    Hmm...

    The Wheels on the Bus
This Old Man (you know, "This old man, he played one, he played knick knack on my thumb...")
    Do(e), a deer, a female deer
    On Top of Spaghetti
    Yankee Doodle
    To Kokoraki (Greek song)
    Bingo
The Ants Go Marching One by One...
    The Itsy Bitsy Spider
    Old MacDonald

I have also been known to sing them things like "Punk Rock Girl" by the Dead Milkmen, "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones, and 'It's the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine)"...

Lately I've been singing Mr. Sandman (the song from the 50's) during dinner...they love the deep voiced yes part and the bum bum bum bum. Always a sure fire winner to induce giggles.

They also love the Green Bean song - something I made up just for fun. It's a spin off of the Beans, Beans, the musical fruit, the more you eat, the more you toot little ditty. My mom hates that song.

Since they love hearing me whistle, I swear I have whistled the entire score of West Side Story several times.

Anything classic rock related. We crank up the radio during our bathtime routine.

    We do:
    Patty Cake
    The Wheels on the Bus
If You're Happy and You Know It
    Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
    Itsy Bitsy Spider
    I'm a Little TeaPot
    Twinkle Twinkle
    ABC's
    Old MacDonald
    BINGO the Dog
Five Little Monkeys (on DS likes this one)

I do like this one, but it came from our EI speech lady:
(Use one hand to wiggle like a fish fin, then both hands to do the bubbles)

All the fish are swimming in the water, swimming in the water, swimming in the water
All the fish are swimming in the water
    Bubble, Bubble, Bubble, SPLASH!

I made a couple up when they were babies and so I sing those, too.

We do "Itsy Bitsy Spider" alot, they both love watching the hand movements. I also like "Wheels on the Bus" and "Old MacDonald" because I can improvise the words and add whatever I want. Oh... I forgot their favorite! The theme song to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse! There are only about 10 words, so it gets old for me fast, but it really helps cheer them up if they are fussing! They love it!
When I was a preschool teacher, the director used to sing "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". I have stolen that idea, and sometimes sing different children's stories. I can use whatever musical style I want, make up the words as I go along, and the kids love it!
My older girls are 13 and 14, so they are sick of hearing me sing (they realize I am BAD), but the babies don't understand talent yet... so they love my singing!

My cousin made us a whole CD of amazing songs that we play every single day ... When I get home from work I immediately turn on the CD player and put it in ... and the kids and I dance around while I get dinner ready ... there is one song that both DH and I can't get out of our heads ... It's call the Poopsmith Song by Over the Rhine and the lyrics go "Poop in the Potty, Poop goes in the potty, Not on your brother, not on your sister" ... it's SO funny ... the kids always laugh at it ... not that they have any idea what they are saying, but because me and DH laugh ... I'll have to post all the songs on it later ... and you can download and listen to them ... really good fun stuff for kids ...

My guys currently love Itsy Bitzy Spider, Row, Row, Row Your Boat, Hickory Dickory Dock and a modified version of Bingo (there was a boy who had a dog)...

For some reason, I can usually get them to calm down with these songs. That said however, I was just singing some Norah Jones in the car yesterday!

My musical memory seems to be stuck in the 1940s! My boys insist on 1 of 4 songs at bedtime:

Hush Little Baby (the hummingbird variation):

Hush little baby, don't say a word
Mama's gonna show you a hummingbird
    If that hummingbird should fly
Mama's gonna show you the evening sky
    When the nighttime shadows fall
We're gonna hear those crickets call
While their songs drift from afar
Mama's gonna show you a shooting star
When that star has dropped from view
Mama's gonna read a book with you
    When that storybook's been read
Mama's gonna bring you your warm bedspread
If that spread begins to wear
Mama's gonna find you your teddy bear
If that teddy bear won't hug
Mama's gonna catch you a lightning bug
If that lightning bug won't glow
Mama's gonna play on her old banjo
If that banjo's out of tune
Mama's gonna show you the harvest moon
And as the moon drifts from the sky
Mama's gonna sing you a lullaby

    Big Rock Candy Mountain:

One evening as the sun went down
And the jungle fires were burning,
Down the track came a hobo hiking,
And he said, "Boys, I'm not turning
I'm headed for a land that's far away
    Besides the crystal fountains
So come with me, we'll go and see
    The Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains,
    There's a land that's fair and bright,
Where the handouts grow on bushes
And you sleep out every night.
Where the boxcars all are empty
And the sun shines every day
And the birds and the bees
    And the cigarette trees
    The lemonade springs
    Where the bluebird sings
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
All the cops have wooden legs
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth
And the hens lay soft-boiled eggs
The farmers' trees are full of fruit
And the barns are full of hay
    Oh I'm bound to go
    Where there ain't no snow
    Where the rain don't fall
    The winds don't blow
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
    You never change your socks
And the little streams of alcohol
    Come trickling down the rocks
The brakemen have to tip their hats
And the railway bulls are blind
    There's a lake of stew
    And of whiskey too
You can paddle all around it
    In a big canoe
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains,
The jails are made of tin.
And you can walk right out again,
As soon as you are in.
    There ain't no short-handled shovels,
    No axes, saws nor picks,
    I'm bound to stay
    Where you sleep all day,
    Where they hung the jerk
    That invented work
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.

    Hobo's Lullaby:

    Don't you worry bout tomorrow,
    Let tomorrow come and go.
Tonight you've got a nice warm boxcar
Safe from all the wind and snow.

So go to sleep, you weary hobo,
Let the towns drift slowly by.
Can't you hear the steel rail hummin' ?
    That's the hobo's lullaby.

Oh, I know your clothes are ragged
And your hair is turning grey.
Lift your head and smile at trouble,
You'll find peace and rest someday.

So go to sleep, you little hobo,
Let the towns drift slowly by.
Tonight you've got a nice warm boxcar,
    That's the hobo's lullaby.

I know the police cause you trouble,
    They cause trouble everywhere.
But when you die and go to Heaven,
There will be no police there.

So go to sleep, you weary hobo,
Let the towns drift slowly by.
Can you hear the steel rail hummin' ?
    That's the hobo's lullaby.

Do not let your heart be troubled
If the world calls you a bum.
Cause if your mother lived, she'd love you,
You are still your mother's son.

So go to sleep, my weary hobo,
Let the towns drift slowly by.
Can you hear the steel rails hummin' ?
    That's the hobo's lullaby.

    That's the hobo's lullaby.
    That's the hobo's lullaby.

You Are My Sunshine (the entire stalker version):

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between.
    But not you've left me and love another;
You have shattered all of my dreams:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me
When I awake my poor heart pains.
So when you come back and make me happy
I'll forgive you dear, I'll take all the blame.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

Itsy bitsy spider (modified to be include their names)
To the BINGO song (there was a farmer had a dog and bingo was his name-o)- I sing "there was a mom who had a girl and Meara/Ana was her name-o" and go from there.
    Alphabet song
Miss Mary Mack (there is a commercial right now with women in suits in an elevator doing this, and so it sparked my memory!)
    Patty cake
Row Row Row your boat (and we also use this tune for our teeth brushing song)
    Wheels on the bus
And all kinds of song I make up... I can't think of anything else. (BTW, I'm a TERRIBLE singer!!!)

Also, I play them my music and they are really into ABBA and the Kinks right now!

My 2 year old loves the Itsy Bitsy Spider song. My mom first sang it to him when he was in the hospital at this time last year with pneumonia. Now he thinks he knows the motions, but has trouble with the spider part. It's still cute to watch.

Bingo -- we substitute the names of everyone in the family, like this:
There was a farmer had a dog and Sarah was his name-o! S-A-R-A-H! (etc.) The girls are way into this. (I see we're not the only ones who do this!)

    Other favorites are
    Baa Baa Black Sheep
    Billy Boy
    Oh Susannah
She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain
Wheels on the Bus (though it seems to be out of favor at the moment)

We have a CD of "A Treasury of Toddler Favorites" that we listen to incessantly in the car, so most of my repertoire comes from that.

I try to sing them other folk songs that I happen to know (Peter Paul & Mary, John Denver, etc.), but they're at an age where they only want to hear songs they already know, so I usually don't get away with it.

That's so funny about the "ummmm." We play this game called eat it or wear it from a show called pinky dinky doo and everything i'm trying to think of a food or article of clothing i say ummmm so now when they want to play that game they just say "ummmm" and that's my clue that they want to play

    As for songs,

    Wheels on the bus
    open shut them
    Bingo
    head shoulders knees and toes
the farmer and the dell (i do this one when they are getting dressed...the sock goes on the foot, the sock goes on the foot, hi ho the derrio, the sock goes on the foot. the pants go on the legs, the pants go on the legs, etc...)
lots of songs by Laurie Berkner, especially moon moon moon by Laurie Berkner(sang that one a gazillion times in the ped office yesterday  )
lots of songs from Yo Gabba Gabba (especially the song about sharing)
    twinkle twinkle
rain rain go away (on days like today <_< )
if your happy and you know it
    itsy bitsy spider

I pretty much sing all day. If I'm not singing an original song, I am totally making one up. that's how i was as a teacher always. the kids' parents would always comment on how their kids would come home singing so many songs :D

There's one that they do at Gymboree that goes

Open shut them open shut them
Give a little clap clap clap...

It has cute hand movements and I've actually seen it demonstrated on you tube if you'd like to check it out. The boys love it!

There's also one called "One Little Finger" that teaches the body parts-really cute. It's from the Simple Songs series...also on you tube. I think they're geared towards English Language Learners.

All the usuals the PP's listed, plus sometimes I just make something up, or make up alternate lyrics, they get a big kick out of that. Like Baa Baa Purple Sheep, and they will shout "No! Black!". I also sing a lot of songs from Signing Time, some from Sound of Music (they LOVE Do Re Mi), songs we learned from storytime, like "Put Your Finger On", and of course They Might Be Giants.

Ellen, I did not know those lyrics to "You Are My Sunshine". Yikes, restraining order!

Itsy bitsy spider I changed to 'little Kohbi Thomas'
And BINGO - 'Once there was a little girl and Lacey was her name-o - L -A-C-E-Y' etc.

I change nearly every song like that.

ie. 'Kohbi Thomas had a bath e-i-e-i-o' (old mcDonald)

The other day I was singing to Kohbi (Lacey still in bed)
    (Baa, Baa Black sheep)
'Kohbi Thomas, have you any wool?'

"Teddy Bears, Teddy Bears" song --

Teddy bears, teddy bears touch your nose,
Teddy bears, teddy bears touch your toes,
Teddy bears, teddy bears turn around,
Teddy bears, teddy bears touch the ground,
Teddy bears, teddy bears, go upstairs,
Teddy bears, teddy bears, say your prayers,
Teddy bears, teddy bears, turn off the light,
Teddy bears, teddy bears, say good night.

Also, we do Fleetwood Mac "Rhiannon" because my daughter's name is "Rianna". She loves that one! And lastly, Somewhere over the Rainbow

It's fun to see what others sing. I sing almost all the ones everybody has mentioned, and I have a couple other ones I sing alot.

    Do Your Ears Hang Low

5 Little Ducks Went Out One Day

    5 Green and Speckled Frogs

We have alot of church songs and Sunday School songs we sing as well!

Somebody here once had posted a link to a bunch of kids songs (words and music), and I had saved it on my other computer that crashed, and I no longer have it. It was great, wish someone knew where it was.

How much is that doggie in the window.
I went to the animal fair, the birds and the bees were there
Down in the meadow in the itty bitty pool, lived a little mommy fishie and her baby fishies too
    Old McDonald had a farm e i e i o

Laurie Berkner has some great cds we play in the car sometimes. All kid friendly about dinosaurs, ice cream, movement songs.

At home my boys are into action songs

They like Popcorm popping, 5 little monkey jumping on the bed or

5 little monkey swinging in the trees (interlace fingers and do a wave like motion)
