Entwined Lives: Twins and What they Tell Us...
|
|
Twins have fascinated both parents and scientists for centuries. Families may question more issues surrounding the raising and subsequent closeness of twins while scholars may be more interested in studying twins to see what they can teach us about our society and genetics. However both groups share a similar interest--the desire to determine what causes the special bond between twins, triplets and higher-order multiples.
Nancy L. Segal, professor of Developmental Pyschology and director of the Twin Studies Center at Cal-State Fullerton University, looks at the twin bond from both viewpoints in a newly revised edition of a book now available online and in bookstores,
'Entwined Lives: Twins and What They Tell Us About Human Behavior'.
So what can a twin learn by reading Entwined Lives? One theme which returns over and over while reading the book is the differences between identical vs. fraternal twins and how they may impact behavior and relationships. My twin brother and myself don't know if we're identical or fraternal. Our mom says we are fraternal because we had two placentae, but Dr. Segal has done studies that show parents correctly identify their twins as either identical or fraternal just 74% of the time (she claims a personal 94% success rate in determining twin types). There are several ways to accurately determine the zygosity of twins with the two most effective systems being a DNA test or examining blood group systems of the twins. All fraternal twins have two placentae, two amnions and two chorions but so do one-third of all identical twins.
Why is important to know the difference? The author (herself a fraternal twin) claims that in addition to the scientific differences in identical twins (sharing 100% of their genes) vs. fraternal twins (sharing 50% of their genes), there are sociological differences between the two main types of twins.
The book has chapters on twinless twins, "pseudo-twins" (raising two same-age children who aren't twins), twins separated at birth ("nature vs. nurture"), the rise in multiple births due to fertility advances (Dr. Segal theorizes that twinning rates will subside soon as improved techniques will bring successful conceptions with fewer embryos) as well as non-human twins in the animal kingdom.
Entwined Lives has a little of everything relating to multiples. The many questions surrounding twins and other multiples aren't all answered in this book, but it does an excellent job of summarizing recent trends and new knowledge. We highly recommend it for all twins and parents of multiples.

Everything You Need to Know to Have a Healthy Twin Pregnancy
|
|
Two new books filled with advice and assistance to help pregnant moms of multiples deliver healthy twins were released a few years ago--an autobiographical look by actress Jane Seymour ('Two at a Time...') on her experiences of being pregnant with her now 7 1/2-year-old twin sons, and a step-by-step guide by a New York City-based OB-GYN ('Everything You Need to Know...') who also is a mom of twins. Seymour promoted the book with a national media tour with TV, radio and print interviews but 'Everything You Need to Know' was hardly noticed at all.
While both books offer solid strategies for helping moms make it through their pregnancies, for those parents looking for one overall reference to consult, we highly recommend picking up Dr. Leiter's handbook and ignoring Seymour's much more impractical look at mothering twins.
Want to sum up the two books in one quick comparison? Seymour's 'Two at a Time' tells you almost everything you may want to know about her pregnancy with twins, while Dr. Leiter's 'Everything You Need to Know' tells you almost everything you may want to learn about your own pregnancy with multiples.
Unfortunately, in a quiet marketplace filled with books and articles that sometimes present conflicting and even incorrect information to women who are pregnant with twins, these two library additions also include facts that don't match. Here's one passage from 'Two at a Time' in which Seymour relates how she deals with questions on whether her twins are identical or fraternal:
"My boys have a strong family resemblance to each other, but they are fraternal. Still, people are forever asking me if they are identical. More to the point, they also ask me how I can be sure whether they're identical or fraternal. Usually, I simply smile and tell them to look a little more carefully at the boys, and they'll see the differences. With closer friends I tell them I know because all babies conceived with helps, as ours were, are fraternal."
Compare that with this passage in Dr. Leiter's book:
Some 3.5 to 4 births in 1,000 are monozygotic (identical) twins, a rate that seems to be fairly constant throughout the world. However, for reasons that we don't fully understand, women who are having ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology), seem to conceive monozygotic twins at a rate two to three times higher than in unassisted pregnancies.
'Everything You Need to Know' does come close to its title and is laid out in chronologically-arranged chapters that take you through the twin pregnancy from before conception to comprehensive looks at each trimester to the actual labor and bringing your twins home. We found it to be filled with quality information without the scare factor that you sometimes see in other books about multiple pregnancies.
For those women pregnant with twins who don't have a body double, we suggest reading Dr. Leiter's book. If you want to gain additional perspective, particularly how it applies to a woman who had difficulties becoming pregant as well as some challenges during the pregnancy but then gave birth to a healthy set of twins, Seymour's book would be a good addition.

Indivisible by Two: Lives of Extraordinary Twins
|
|
Families with twins or twins themselves typically like reading and hearing about other twins. For that audience that likes reading about notable multiples, Dr. Nancy Segal's newly-published 'Indivisible by Two: Lives of Extraordinary Twins' is a must-read.
Chronicling the stories of a dozen sets of multiples, the book takes readers into the dual lives of twins, triplets and quads around the globe. The book offers up three stories of twins who were separated at birth, another trio of identical multiples who showed different stages of socialogical or genetical development, three sets of twins who triumphed during adversity and then three more human interest tales involving twins and quads. One of the stories details my family history - The Sanders Family - twins married to twins written about in the Marital Math chapter.
Each of the dozen stories provides fascinating reading. But my personal favorite story involved the tale of Melanie and Mira, blonde-haired, blue-eyed identical twin girls who each suffer from a rare form of selective mutism, a social anxiety disorder that limits the amount of talking in public each sister will willingly make. One of the twins, Melanie, suffers a little more severly from the disorder, but the fact that both sisters show the same symptoms probably allows them each to function more efficiently in a form of partnership with this socially-limiting disorder. Dr. Segal carefully spent time with each girl and relates those experiences to the readers and I felt the chapter was the most rewarding in the book in terms of providing us an insight into the special lives of a unique pair of twins. Melanie and Mira draw comparisons to a well-known set of twins, June and Jennifer Gibbons, the Silent Twins, who carried their selective mutism traits to tragic end as adults. Having read Marjorie Wallace's writings on the Gibbons Twins, I do feel that Melanie and Mira have a much greater chance of conquering their disorders and going on to lead individual, happy, normal lives.
Other interesting chapters include the story of Auschwitz twin experiment survivors, Annetta and Stepha, who are now 79 years old each and living in Australia, and the story of a set of quads who live in Canada which consists of two sets of identical twin boys. And hopefully readers will enjoy learning more about my family's dual courtships and three sets of twins living next door to one another. The book didn't offer the latest update as on Sept. 29, 2005, my wife and I welcomed the newest member of our family, a son Holden, baby brother to twins Brady and Colby.

Twin Tales: The Magic and Mystery of Multiple Births
|
|
Twin Tales: The Magic and Mystery of Multiple Births (Little Brown, April 2001), focuses on explaining the fascination with twins specifically for a young audience and is a perfect book for parents to share with their twins at the age 12-and-under reading level.
The 48-page book covers many various aspects of twins: bonding, conception to birth, identical twins, fraternal twins, supertwins, nature vs. nurture and amazing twins, while also offering numerous profiles throughout the book of famous twins. Author Donna Jackson (the daughter of a twin), spent several years interviewing twin experts and famous multiples and has crafted a book which should appeal to all young twins and their families.
One interesting essay updates the "Twin Rescuing Hug" twins, Brielle and Kyrie Jackson, who were born prematurely on October 17, 1995. After Brielle's condition became critical shortly after their birth, nurses tried the double-bedding technique in which her twin sister, Kyrie, was placed in the same incubator. The results were dramatic as Brielle quickly gained strength and the twins were discharged from the hospital about a month later. You may have seen the Internet version of this story distributed to you via email (with a famous picture of Kyrie hugging her sister in the hospital incubator). Jackson's book offers an update on the twins with more recent photos.

|
|
