Twin Pregnancy Diary

Approaching the Big 3-0
(Originally posted Apr. 10, 2001; Updated Apr. 18)--For a lot of adults, the days before your 30th birthday can be ones of apprehension and dread. Well for the two of us, this week is another 'count the days until we reach the big 3-0 milestone' as on Friday, our twins pregnancy officially enters week 30.

We're not sure why, but for the two of us, in this case 30 seems to be a fairly important milestone. Maybe because since there is so little chance with twins of reaching the normal gestational figure of 40 weeks, it's the realization that we're now at the numerical level where at some point during the next nine weeks our twins will be born. Or maybe it's because it means we're past most of the really dangerous preemie levels and our twins could survive even if born in the very near future. Or maybe it's just because our twins' mommy and daddy are wimps who never coped properly with turning 30 themselves.

Regardless, we're both looking forward to our twins "turning 30" this Friday.

On Monday, Diane had her latest doctor's visit--this time going solo as Craig was busy at work and with entertaining family members visiting from out of town. She was tested during the visit for gestational diabetes and should receive the test results in a few days. In case you've heard bad things about the drink they make you finish before the test, Diane claims it wasn't bad at all and actually tasted like a bottle of orange soda.

On Wednesday, Diane did receive the results of the gestational diabetes test and it came back slightly elevated. She had to go back for another series of tests the following Monday. This time, she had to have blood drawn four times, once before taking the drink and then an hour, two hours and three hours following the drink. Prepared for the worst, but hoping for the best, we got those test results on Tuesday. Negative! We celebrated with his and her pieces of birthday cake at a friend's surprise birthday party that night!

Once again, they measured our twins heart beats and Baby A was 150 and Baby B was a very active 164. That could still mean girls but in doing more research it appears that the fetal heart rate really doesn't determine the sex of the baby at all. Those heart rates did tell us that once again we have an active pair of twins, a fact that was confirmed when they kept kicking each other during the ultrasound taken during the doctor's visit.

Our doctor also thought they might be identical because they are so close to each other in the placenta. They are both still head-down so that's good. Hopefully they'll stay that way! And although Dr. Hartshorne did perform the ultrasound, she wasn't able to give us an exact measurement of the twins' weights, but thought they were both about two pounds.

The blood pressure checked out fine so Diane can keep working for now. Our next doctor's visit is the 24th, and we also have another full ultrasound scheduled for May 1. So we'll be able to see our 30-something twins again very soon!
