Movie Title

Movie Description

Andy Hardy’s Blonde Trouble (1944)

Andy (Mickey Rooney) meets blonde twins on a train on his way to college. The twins (Lee and Lyn Walker) are played by real-life twins Lee and Lynn Wilde, who starred in a handful of films in the 40’s and 50’s.

Baby Geniuses (1999)

Kathleen Turner and Christopher Lloyd play doctors working for BABYCO, the world’s leading manufacturer of baby products, while also trying to crack the ‘Baby Code,’ the secret language babies use to communicate with each other. Two of the main babies in the film (Witt and Sylvester) are twins played by Canadian triplets Leo, Myles, and Gerry Fitzgerald.

Big Business (1988)

Bette Midler (Sadie) and Lily Tomlin (Rose) play dual roles as each half of a set of twins (the Shelton and Ratliff Twins) born in the same small town hospital on the same day but then separated at birth in this mistaken-identity film directed by Jim Abraham (‘Airplane’).

Big Daddy (1999)

Six-year-old twin brothers Cole and Dylan Sprouse share the acting duties playing the young boy Julian who Adam Sandler raises in this summer comedy. Cole and Dylan (15 minutes older than Cole) also shared the role of the son Patrick in the TV series Grace Under Fire.

Big Fish (2003)

A young man (Ewan McGregor) unravels the truth and tall tales surrounding his father’s (Albert Finney) life. This 2003 Tim Burton fantasy features a set of conjoined twins, Ping and Jing, who are played by real-life identical twin sisters, Ada and Arlene Tai. The Tai twins have also appeared together in Rush Hour, Ed Wood, Rock Paper Scissors, and Shui Hen.

Doppelte Lottchen, Das (1950)

The original German film is based on the popular children’s book of the same title (by Erich Kästner), in which girls meet at a summer camp without knowing they are twins who were separated at birth. They learn of their bond and then plot to reunite with their divorced parents. Remade several times, most famously in the U.S. as The Parent Trap. It was also remade in Germany in 1993 with the title ‘Charlie and Louise.’ The German films are the only versions in which twins (Jutta and Isa Günther in the original, Floriane and Fritzi Eichhorn in the remake) played the dual roles.

Double Teamed (2002)

This biography flix profiles the world’s tallest female twins, Heidi and Heather Burge. The movie focuses on the Burge’s early high school days (when they were probably just 6’1″ or so and not the 6’5″ they would end up) and stars non-twins, Annie McElwain (‘Seventh Heaven,’ ‘Saved by the Bell’) as Heidi and Poppi Monroe as Heather. It also stars Mackenzie Phillips (‘One Day at a Time) as the Burge’s mom, Mary.

Drillinge au Bord (1959)

A German film starring Heinz Erhardt as identical triplets Eduard, Otto and Heinz stowaways on a free cruise that the youngest triplet wins in a contest.

8 Crazy Nights (2002)

A new holiday animated film released in 2002 starring the voice of Adam Sandler as a man who is given a second chance during Hanukkah. Universally panned, we list it here for its inclusion of twin characters, Whitey and Eleanore Duvall (the fraternal twins are also voiced-over by Sandler).

COMEDIES (37 movies listed)
Escape to Witch Mountain(1995)Brad Dourif plays twins (Luther and The Hermit) in this 1995 TV remake of the original 1975 Disney film starring Kim Richards. Dourif’s twins hope to learn the secret of their origin as they flee a millionaire who wants to exploit their mystic powers. Lots of good character actors, including Henry Gibson and Robert Vaughn co-star with Dourif (a veteran actor who has appeared in three Academy-Award winning movies and who is also the voice of Chucky in the Child’s Play movies).
Girl in Every Port, A (1952)This might be a stretch but the plot of this comedy (which features Groucho Marx, William Bendix and Don DeFore) features identical twin horses.
Harry Potter Movies(2001-2004)Forget that Harry Potter kid! We know the real stars of the Harry Potter movies and books are the Weasley Twins, played in the first three installments of the film series by real-life twins, James and Oliver Phelps.
Hot Lead and Cold Feet(1978)British actor Jim Dale plays very opposite twin brothers (one’s a little bit city, the other’s a little bit country to paraphrase Donny and Marie) who are out to claim a family fortune in this Disney western spoof. Movie also stars Don Knotts, Jack Elam, Karen Valentine and Darren McGavin.
Hotel de Love(1997)Australian comedy about fraternal twin brothers who work at a hotel. Aden Young and Simon Bossell play the twin brothers who both covet an old college flame when they meet her 10 years later.
Life is Sweet(1991)Highly-regarded film by Academy Award nominee Mike Leigh about an England East End family. Claire Skinner and Jane Horrocks play twin sisters Natalie and Nicola.
Me, Myself & Irene(2000)Jim Carrey plays the stepfather of fraternal triplets (played by Jerod Mixon, Anthony Anderson, Mongo Brownlee as adults) in this gross-out offering from the Farrelly Brothers, the directors of ‘There’s Something About Mary’, ‘Kingpin’ and ‘Dumb and Dumber’. Except for the triplets, there isn’t too much to recommend about this film…
Merry Mix-Up, A(1957)The Three Stooges extend their acting talents, portraying three sets of triplets who were separated at birth.
Miracle of Morgan’s Creek, The(1944)Classic World War II Comedy directed by Preston Sturges in which small-town girl Trudy Kockenlocker (played by Betty Hutton) gets married to Norval Jones (Eddie Bracken) and then delivers sextuplets. Nominated for Best Original Screenplay.
Multiplicity(1996)Amusing film starring Michael Keaton as a construction worker who undergoes a cloning technique to create duplicates of himself to aid him in the pressures of work and family life. The clones have their own little quirks (as do all multiples…) and tend to lose a little bit in clarity as more are introduced.
New York Minute(2004)Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen continue their transformation from child stars to teenage actresses with this straight to theater release (just their 2nd-ever theatrical release) in which Mary-Kate plays the wilder sister, Roxy, and Ashley plays the good sister, Jane. Also stars Eugene Levy, Andy Richter and Bob Saget in a cameo.
One Crazy Summer(1986)Eclectic cast of John Cusack, Demi Moore, William Hickey and Joe Flaherty in this well-made comedy. Sidekicks in the film include Bobcat Goldthwait and Tom Villiard as the Stork Twins.
Our Relations(1936)A classic Laurel and Hardy film where the comedy team plays dual roles as Stan and Ollie and their long-long twin brothers, Alfie and Bert, sailors who come into town with a valuable pearl ring entrusted to them by a ship captain. Parent Trap, The(1961)Classic 1961 Disney film starring Hayley Mills as separated twins who meet at camp and plot to bring their divorced parents back together. Maureen O’Hara plays the mother of one twin while Brian Keith (who would also play the parents of twins in the TV series ‘A Family Affair’) plays the father of the other. The new DVD release of this film explains how Disney filmed many of the “twin” scenes.
Parent Trap, The (remake)(1998)The remake of the 1961 film stars Lindsay Lohan (who does a great job) as the twins Hallie and Annie and also stars Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson as the separated parents. I guess Hollywood still can’t find twin actresses to play the role of the sisters, but at least this one used an acting double (Erin Mackey) for certain scenes.
Quints(2000)A 14-year-old girl (Kimberly Brown) must share her parents’ attentions when they give birth to quintuplets. Don Knotts also stars as the state’s Governor. We think they had five sets of twins, one set of triplets and one set of quads play the quints.
Raising Arizona(1987)Holly Hunter (pregnant with twins in late 2005) and Nicolas Cage play Edwina and H.I. McDonough, a childless couple (“Edwina’s insides were a rocky place where my seed could find no purchase,” says Cage’s character) who decides to kidnap one of furntiure tycoon Nathan Arizon’s quintuplets. This Coen Brothers movie also stars John Goodman, Oscar Winner Frances McDormand (‘Fargo’) and 12 different babies starring as the Quints (including two sets of twins).
Rock-A-Bye Baby(1958)One of the few films out there about triplets–this comedy stars Jerry Lewis as the babysitter for the triplets of a movie star played by Mariyn Maxwell. Connie Stevens and Hans Conreid also star in this comedy written by Frank Tashlin and based on the Preston Sturges screenplay from ‘The Miracles of Morgan’s Creek’.
Sheep Has Five Legs, The(1954)French comedy (Le mouton à cinq pattes) starring Fernandel in multi-character role as both an old wine-growing father and each fifth of his five adult identical quintuplet sons, who have gathered for a family reunion. Nominated for an Academy Award in 1955 for Best Writing.
Slapstick (of Another Kind)(1984)Jerry Lewis and the late Madeline Kahn play parents who find out they each have twins who are aliens from another planet. Lewis hopefully remembers some of his earlier triplet babysitting duties from his 1958 film, ‘Rock-A-Bye Baby’.
Start the Revolution Without Me(1970)A loose parody centering around two sets of identical twins separated at birth during the French Revolution. Gene Wilder and Donald Sutherland (who in real life is the father of twins Kiefer and Rachel) play the sets of twins in this Bud Yorkin-directed film.
Steal Big, Steal Little(1995)Real-life twinless twin Andy Garcia plays both roles in this comedy about a twin and his unscrupulous brother. Alan Arkin, Rachel Ticotin and David Ogden Stiers also star.
Stuck on You(2003)A comedy of questionable taste about conjoined twins made by the (non-twin) Farrelly Brothers. Stars Matt Damon (Bob) and Greg Kinnear (Walt) as the conjoined twins as well as cameos by Cher and Meryl Streep. We’ll reserve full judgement until the film hits theaters this Christmas.
Twice Blessed(1945)The Wilde Sisters (‘Andy Hardy’s Blonde Trouble’)return in this film about a pair of twin sisters who are separated as children when their parents divorce. Pre-dates Disney’s ‘The Parent Trap’, which uses basically the same premise. For more on this film, you can visit this page on the Wilde Twins Web Site.
Twice Upon a Time(1953)A remake of the 1950 German film, Das Doppelete Lottchen, in which twin girls meet at a summer camp for the first time and try to reunite their parents. The most well-known version of this story was made in the U.S. a decade later at ‘The Parent Trap’.
Twin Sitters(1994)This movie quite possibly features more sets of twins than any other film in history. Twin brothers Peter and David Paul (body builder twins who’ve appeared in a half-dozen or so films) starred and co-produced this film which features the pair as waiters turned baby sitters for a pair of 10-year-old identical twins (played by twins Christian and Joseph Cousins). Four other sets of multiples are also featured in the movie, the Kim Twins (as the Tiger Twins), the Aleem Twins, Tasha and Sidra Smith as the Aleem’s Wives and the Del Rubio Triplets who play waitresses.
Twins(1988)Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger play fraternal twin brothers Julius and Vincent Benedict. ‘Nuff said (although a good supporting cast does include Kelly Preston, Chloe Webb, and a young David Caruso).
Wonder Man(1945)When a brash young nightclub entertainer is murdered, his ghost urges his studious twin brother to seek revenge. A 1945 movie starring Danny Kaye and Virginia Mayo. Kaye plays the twins, Buzzy Bellew and Edwin Dingle, and the movie also features Natalie Schafer (Mrs. Howell from Gilligan’s Island). Winner of the 1945 Oscar for Best Special Effects.

Apple, The(1998)Honored film made by 18-year-old Iranian Director, Samira Makhmalbaf, based on a true event, the self-imposed “imprisonment” of a pair of 11-year-old twin girls by their elderly father and blind mother. The real-life twins (the Naderi Sisters) and parents play themselves in this thought-provoking film.
Bad Company(2002)Chris Rock plays twin brothers in this Joel Schumacher-directed action film. One twin is a Harvard-educated CIA agent killed in a training exercise while the other is a street-wise hustler recruited by a CIA operative (Anthony Hopkins) to fill in for his twin. All reviews we’ve ever seen for this film made it sounds like it’s a bad film–for twins or non-twins.
Bride with White Hair, The(1993)Action flick in which a warrior and a comely witch he revived from the dead team up to seek revenge against the evil Siamese twins who are responsible for the corruption of their kingdom.
Brotherly Love(1985)A TV-Movie starring Judd Hirsch (Taxi) as a twin interior designer who suspects his psychopathic twin is trying to kill him. It must be something about the TV series Taxi because at least three former cast members of that series have gone on to play twins in later movies.
Chained for Life(1951)Real-life conjoined twin sisters Violet and Daisy Hilton play conjoined sisters Vivian and Dorothy Hamilton in this rarely-seen crime drama. The “plot” revolves around the murder of Dorthy’s husband after her arranged marriage fails miserably. Interesting if only to see the talented Hilton Sisters sing a few songs.
Change of Place, A(1994)Actress Andrea Roth plays twin sisters Kate “Dominique” and Kim Jameson. It’s a classic twin in trouble being replaced by the good twin plot as the nicey-nicey, studious Kim replaces the drunken and always in trouble model twin sis Dominique who happens to be on assignment in Paris. Rick Springfield and Ian Richardson also star.
City of Lost Children(1995)Highly original fantasy film made by French duo Jeuret & Caro (‘Delicatessen’) about a circus strongman (Ron Perlman) and a little girl who try to save the strongman’s little brother and his dreams from a madman, a clone who is unable to dream on his own. Also stars Karl Malden and Peter Lawford. Not to be confused with the Jeremy Irons film of the same title shown below in our horror section. Later re-made into a TV Movie with Ann Jillian.
Deceptions(1985)Another soapy made-for-TV film you can sometimes catch in reruns on cable… This one stars Stephanie Powers as twin sisters Stephanie and Sabrina who switch roles with the mousy Stephanie taking over for the glamorous Sabrina and vice-versa. An eclectic cast that also features Barry Bostwick, Sam Wanamaker, Brenda Vacarro, Gina Lolabrigida and a young Fairuza Balk as one of the twin’s daughter.
Dominick and Eugene(1988)Tom Hulce and Ray Liotta play twin brothers Dominick and Eugene Luciano. Dominick is the slower of the two brothers and works as a garbageman to help put his brother through medical school. An underrated, moving tearjerker of a film that also stars Jamie Lee Curtis.

Twins (38 listings)
Twins Names/ShowNotes
Al and Moo Sleech
Doug
We know the the Sleech Twins are classmates of Doug, generally from the Disney era of this show, but we don’t know more about this pair. They were in Doug’s First Movie as well. The Disney Press book, Haunted House Hysteria, Disney’s Doug–Funny Mysteries #5 also features the Sleech Twins in a plot from a TV episode (the Sleech Twins turn to Doug for help when they fear their dad is embarking on a life of crime).
Allison and Katie Foster
Double Trouble
The Sagal Twins, Liz and Jean, played Allison and Kate, respectively, in the short-lived sitcom, ‘Double Trouble’ that aired for 23 episodes on NBC from April, 1984 to March, 1985. They were teenagers being raised by a single dad who was played by Donnelly Rhodes. Patricia Richardson (who would later play the aunt of twins on Home Improvement) and Barbara Barrie also starred in the show. Although they never gained the popularity of their older sister, Katey (from TV’s ‘Married with Children’), Liz and Jean Sagal had many other TV and movie credits to their name, including starring as twin sorority sisters in ‘Grease 2’. Jean has gone on to direct some TV sitcoms, including directing another pair of young female twins, the Olsen Twins, in their show ‘So Little Time’.
Bebe and Cece Proud
The Proud Family
Unlike the twin babies (Phil and Lil) on ‘Rugrats’, Bebe and Cece Proud (seen crawling in the image to the left) are quite easy to distinguish on the Disney Channel animated series, ‘The Proud Family’. Let’s just say that Bebe has advanced much more quickly than Cece in the hair department. They are the younger siblings of Penny Proud in the family show. Actress Tara Strong, who also does the voice of Baby Dil in Rugrats, provides the voices of Bebe and Cece.
Betty I and Betty II
Quark
Although it aired for just eight episodes, the science-fiction/comedy ‘Quark’ left an indelible impression on Twinstuff’s founders. Quark (Richard Benjamin) had a pair of clones as his love interests in the series, Betty I and Betty II, played by real-life twins, Cyb and Patricia Barksdale, who also starred in Doublemint Gum commercials. The Betty’s co-piloted and co-co-piloted the spaceship (which was a 23rd Century garbage space vehicle) in the show. This spoof hit the TV airwaves about the same time ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ were first popular and was written by Buck Henry.
Bob the Builder & Tom the Zoologist
Bob the Builder
Bob gets all the attention in this popular kids cartoon series, but Bob’s twin brother, Tom the Zoologist, is a successful character of his own, albeit in the Arctic Circle. As far as we know, Tom (camera-shy, no picture available) has made just one appearance in the cartoon series, in the ‘Bob the Builder: A Christmas to Remember’ special.
Brandon and Brenda Walsh
Beverly Hills 90210
The Fox TV series ran from 1990 to 2000 and helped launch the careers of Shannen Doherty and Jason Priestley, who played the first high school and then college-bound twins, Brenda and Brandon. The show focused initially on the Walsh family who moved to Beverly Hills, California from Minnesota. Doherty lasted four seasons on the show, Priestley was on the show for nine seasons. In real-life, Priestley is two years older than Doherty.
Buffy and Jody
A Family Affair (1966-71)
Another of the few family shows to successfully feature boy/girl fraternal twins, ‘A Family Affair’ ran for five years on CBS (1966-71) depicting the twins Buffy (Anissa Jones) and Jody (Johnny Whitaker), their older sister Cissy (Kathy Garver), Uncle Bill (Brian Keith, who also played the dad of twins in the original movie, ‘The Parent Trap’) and Mr. French (Sebastian Cabot). Another piece of Americana that originated in the show was Buffy’s favorite doll, Mrs. Beasley. One story indicated that the orphaned twins were the children of a mom who also had a twin sister (played by June Lockhart in the episode). Tragically, Anissa Jones, the actress who played Buffy died at age 18 in real-life.
Buffy and Jody
A Family Affair (2002)
The WB Network is airing a modernized version of this show that debuted in September, 2002. The roles of the twins are now being played by Sasha Pieterse and Jimmy Pinchak and Uncle Bill is played by Gary Cole and Mr. French is played by Tim Curry.
Chloe and Riley Carlson
So Little Time
‘So Little Time’ was the second TV sitcom to star the Olsen Twins as twins. This go-around had Ashley playing Chloe and Mary-Kate taking on the role of Riley and took a plot line from ‘The Parent Trap’ as the twins’ parents were separated from each other. It aired for parts of two seasons on the Fox Family and then ABC Family Channel on cable TV. It will stop airing original episodes early in 2002 but its reruns will probably still be showing on ABC Family Channel when Mary-Kate and Ashely are each old enough to have grandchildren.
Chuck and Nancy
Shazzan
‘Shazzan’ was an animated TV series on CBS that ran between 1967 and 1969. It depicted the adventures of a male/female set of twins, Chuck and Nancy, and a 60-foot genie (the title of the show, Shazzan) who is the servant to the twins after they are transported back to the days of the Arabaian Knights after finding a chest in a cave in Maine. Chuck is a magician by day.
Erica and Heather Farrell
Degrassi
One of the most popular TV shows ever in Canada, the ‘Degrassi’ series depicted the lives of fictional students who supposedly all lived on the real-life Degrassi Street (in Toronto) and who first attended junior high and then high school together. Among the show’s regulars were twins Erica and Heather, played by real-life identical twins, Angela (Erica) and Maureen (Heather) Deiseach. the show never shied away from reality subjects and one of the plot lines involved Heather’s character having an abortion in high school.
Geri and Teri Garrison
BJ and The Bear
Candi and Randi Brough played Teri and Geri, respectively, during the last season of the 3-year run of ‘BJ and the Bear’ as the show changed focus and locations (to Los Angeles) and BJ was forced to use an all-female crew of truckers for his new trucking company, Bear Enterprises. The show also loses points for being the only entry on this list that used rhyming names for both the real-life twins and the twin characters they played on the show. The Brough Twins also played twins in guest appearances on ‘Happy Days’, ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’, ‘ChiPs’ and the Steve Martin movie, ‘The Lonely Guy’. We can’t find a picture of the Brough Twins from the show, but pictured to the left is the truck they drove.
Jason and Michelle
3-2-1 Penguins
Jason and Michelle are the humans who accompany space-traveling penguins, Zidgel, Midgel, Fidgel and Kevin, in galaxy journeys in this educational series of videos from the makers of Veggie Tales. Each video offers bible-based lessons and value-teaching exercises. The first four videos in the series are called ‘Trouble on Planet Wait-Your-Turn’, ‘The Cheating Scales of Bullamanka’, ‘The Amazing Carnival of Complaining’, and ‘Runaway Pride at Lightstation Killowatt’.
Jayna and Zen
Super Friends
While parents who chase and clean up after twins may feel that all twins have super powers, this duo, Jayna and Zen, of the cartoon and comic book series, ‘Super Friends’, did indeed have powers beyond that of the average human. Of course, they weren’t humans and actually came from the planet, Exxor. According to fan-created web pages we’ve found on the twins, Jayna was pretty good at turning herself into animals, while Zen specialized in turning himself into puddles of water. Judging by their image, they looked a lot alike, even up to their Spock-like ears. Diehard fans may even remember their pet blue monkey, Gleek.
Jessica and Liz Wakefield
Sweet Valley High
The real-life Daniel Twins, Brittany and Cynthia, played Jessica and Elizabeth (‘Liz’) in ‘Sweet Valley High’, the UPN show based on the popular young teens book series. Airing between 1994 and 1997, the show revolved around the Wakefield Twins, the friendly Liz and the manipulative Jessica, and their friends at Sweet Valley High. Brittany Daniel has gone on to do more acting than her sister also appearing in ‘Dawson’s Creek’ and ‘The Basketball Diaries’.

Kim Possible
Younger twin brothers of the Disney Channel cartoon series depicting a high school cheerleader who battles crime on the side. Jim and Tim are ‘lovingly’ called the Tweebs by their older sister. The Cramp Twins
Haven’t heard of this 10-year-old set of twins? You probably will soon as ‘The Cramp Twins’ is the #1-rated cartoon in England among kids and is just now spreading to other parts of the globe. Lucien (with the smallish round, pink head) is the do-gooder of the duo, Wayne (he has a big oval, purplish-gray head) likes to play pranks on his poor twin and outnumbered mom. According to the press notes, “In practically everything they do, The Cramp Twins are polar opposites. Since they are stuck with each other, their lives are a never-ending guerilla war- much of which takes place below the radar of their well-meaning, but essentially oblivious parents.”
Mark and Willie Hogan
The Hogan Family
The fraternal Hogan Twins, Mark (Jeremy Licht) and Willie (Danny Ponce), were two of the three sons that made up the Hogan Family, a series that ran for five years on both NBC and CBS from 1986-91. Actress Valerie Hogan played the boys mom, but when she left the series during the 3rd year over a contract dispute, the oldest son, David (Jason Bateman), helped raised the twins along with the boys Aunt (Sandy Duncan). Among the twins, Mark was the brain and perfectionist while Willie was more carefree and a class clown.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Burke
Two of a Kind
ABC gave the series ‘Two of a Kind’ just 22 episodes during the 1998-99 season but it still marked a transition during their acting careers in which the Olsen Twins matured from child actors to teenagers. Nicky and Alex Katsopolis
Full House
‘Full House’, the long-running sitcom on ABC featured twins but it wasn’t the Olsen’s who combined to play one character. No, these twins were Nicky and Alex, the infant sons played by twins, Blake and Dylan Tuomy-Wilhoit, respectively. On the show, they were the children of Jesse (John Stamos) and Becky (Lori Loughlin). This show still airs repeatedly in reruns on WTBS but the Katsopolis Twins were just on the show during the program’s last three seasons.
Patty and Selma Bouvier
The Simpsons
Attention male twins–Marge Simpson’s older sisters (they are each perpetually 40 years old) are both single. Patty isn’t looking for male companionship, but Selma is on the prowl. She’s been married twice before, including a short-lived marriage to Sideshow Bob. Check them out on the Fox series, ‘The Simpsons’, if you want to learn more about these eligible bachelorettes. With such a long series run, several other twins showed up on ‘The Simpsons’, including brief references to twin brothers for Homer (Guy Incognito) and Bart (Hugo), in the episodes entitled ‘Fear of Flying’ and ‘Treehouse of Horror VII’, respectively. (Thanks to The Last Exit to Springfield for the image of Patty and Selma.

Phil and Lil
The Rugrats
Phil and Lil, The DeVille Twins, have been feature members of the popular Nickelodeon TV Show, ‘Rugrats’, since 1990. You can tell the fraternal twins apart because Lil wears a pink bow in her hair. They have had several starring roles in Rugrats cartoons, including ‘Twins Pique’, ‘The Unfair Pair’ and ‘Together at Last’. Luckily for the other Rugrats characters, Tommy, Chucky and even Angelica, Phil and Lil get along terrifically. You can learn more about them on Nickelodeon’s web site. We should also mention the other set of twins on The Rugrats, Teddy and Terry McNulty, who are probably about two each and the middle children of the five McNulty boys.
Pip and Pop
Bear in the Big Blue House
Pip and Pop (we’re not sure which is which in the image to the left) are twin otters featured on the series, ‘Bear in the Big Blue House’, produced by the Henson Televison Company (of Muppets fame). For the most part they get along pretty well with each other but not always. They like dropping by the big blue house owned by Bear (hence the title of the series). You can learn more about this show and where it airs on their official web site.
Porter and Preston Scavo
Desperate Housewives

Sherri and Terri

The purple-haired Sherri and Terri are just two of several recurring characters on the long-running animated Fox series, ‘The Simpsons’. Tom and Annie Edison
The Edison Twins
Since we never really saw this show, we can’t tell you much about its premise just that ‘The Edison Twins’ ran on The Disney Channel from 1983 to 1986 and starred Andrew Sabiston as a character named Tom Edison and Marnie McPhail as his twin sister, Annie Edison, both of whom evidently were scientific prodigies. They would solve mysteries together.
Tomax and Xamot
G.I. Joe
Mirror-image twins, even to their names, Tomax and Xamot are part of the G.I. Joe series and can be seen on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim series on Sunday nights. Not only are Tomax and Xamot terrific soldiers, but they also excel in banking. They are identical twins except that Xamot has a scar on his face.

ShowNotes
CheersCarla (Rhea Perlman) gives birth to twins, Elvis and Jessie, her seventh and eighth children, after marrying their father, a hockey goalie named Eddie LeBec (Jay Thomas). Just like all of Carla’s kids, the twins don’t get much air-time on the long-running show, so we can’t tell you much about them.
Cosby ShowSondra Huxtable Tibideaux (Sabrina LeBeauf) and her husband, Elvin Tibideaux (Geoffrey Owens) become parents to boy/girl twins, Nelson and Winnie, in an episode that first airs on November 10, 1988. The rest of the family did not know they were having twins. For parts of the 1989 and 90 seasons, Nelson is played by twins, Christopher and Clayton Griggs, while Winnie is played by twins, Monique and Domonique Reynolds.
ERMaybe we shouldn’t really include this set here because they weren’t on the air for long, but they did have famous parents as ‘ER’s Nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Marguiles) gave birth to twin girls, Tess and Kate, that were fathered by Dr. Doug Ross (George Clooney). The twins birth episode (‘Great Expectations’) was originally broadcast on November 25, 1999. Although ‘ER’ is still on TV as of this writing, their parents are both long-gone from the show as are the twins.
Everybody Loves RaymondRay Barrone (Ray Romano) and wife Patricia (Debra Heaton) have twin sons Jeffrey (Sawyer Sweeten) and Michael (Sullivan Sweeten) in the Emmy Award-winning comedy. FriendsPhoebe (a twin although one who wants nothing to her sister, Ursula, and vice-versa) gives birth to triplets as a surrogate mom for her brother and sister-in-law in the 100th episode of the NBC series (original air date, Oct. 8, 1998). Throwing out the many factual flaws in the birth episode (she gives birth naturally, the babies are quite large for newborn triplets, her emergency room delivery doctor is a quack), the show is fairly funny. The triplets (Frank Jr. Jr., Leslie and the girl, Chandler) were played by then seven-month-old quads, Alexis III, Paul, Cole and Justin Cimoch. The triplets make a couple of later return appearances, including one where Monica and Chandler baby-sit.On the last episode of Friends (original air date, May 6, 2004), it’s revealed that Monica and Chandler become the parents of a girl/boy set of twins that they name Erica (after the birth-mom) and Jack (after Monica and Ross’ dad).
Get SmartMaxwell Smart (Don Adams) and Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon) have boy/girl twins in a two-part episode that first airs on November 7 and 14, 1969 and was called ‘And Baby Makes Four’. The names of the twins were never shared on air but then again neither was their mom’s.
Home ImprovementThey weren’t major characters in the show but the Taylor’s (Tim Allen and Patricia Richardson) are Uncle and Aunt to twin girls, Claire and Gracie, the daughters of Tim’s brother, Marty, and wife, Nancy, on the show. Two sets of twins shared the roles of the twin girls, Kaitlyn and Kristen Hooper and Lindsey and Ashley Trefger, during the show’s 7th and 8th seasons.
Knot’s LandingVal (Joan Van Ark) and Gary Ewing (Ted Shackleford) become parents of twins in the 1984-85 season in this long-running night-time soap opera. It is not an easy birth and Val is initially told they are stillborn. Actually they are stolen in a black market baby stealing scandal that takes a whole season to unravel.
My Three SonsOne of Steve’s (Fred MacMurray) three sons, Robbie Douglas, (Don Grady) and his wife Katie (Tina Cole), have triplet sons, Steve, Charley and Robbie, Jr., played by real-life triplets, Joseph, Michael and Daniel Todd.

Seventh HeavenAmong the seven Camden children on this WB Network show are the twins, Sam and David, played by two boys who are actually quadruplets, Lorenzo and Nikolas Brino, since 1999.
Simpsons, TheManjula and Apu deliver octuplets after taking fertility drugs. The episode (“Eight Misbehavin”) that they have the babies is actually quite humorous. One of our favorite quotes from the episode is this exchange between Marge Simpson and the new father. Marge: I knew you had your hands full with the babies, so I baked you some banana bread. Apu: (sarcastic) Oh hallelujah, our problems are solved. We have banana bread. Marge: Maybe you two should get a nanny. Apu: Yes, and what would I pay her with? Banana bread? Sorry, sorry, it’s just that we haven’t slept in days, and we’re running out of money and … banana bread? What the hell were you thinking? Banana bread. Apologize, apologize again. As a token of forgiveness, please take this baby. Homer: No, Marge, no!
Welcome Back KotterGabe Kotter (Gabe Kaplan) and his wife Julie (Marcia Strassman) have girl twins, Robin and Rachel, in a three-part episode that first airs on September 15 and 22, 1977 and was also called ‘And Baby Makes Four’ (see ‘Get Smart’, above). The show’s executive producer, James Komack, originally wanted the babies to be quadruplets (one for each Sweathog) but thankfully was talked out of that idea.

How to get Twins to Sleep Through the Night

With two-or-more young babies, the need by parents to develop strong sleeping patterns for their multiples can be critical.

Part 1: What is Preventing Sleep?

Here’s something that may really surprise you: As much as we may want our babies to sleep through the night, our own subconscious emotions sometimes hold us back from encouraging change in our babies’ sleeping habits. You yourself may be the very obstacle preventing a change in a routine that disrupts your life. So let’s figure out if anything is standing in your way.

Examine Your Own Needs and Goals

Today’s society leads us to believe that “normal babies” sleep through the night from about two months; my research indicates that this is more the exception than the rule. The number of families in your boat could fill a fleet of cruise ships.

“At our last day-care parent meeting, one father brought up the fact that his two-year-old daughter wasn’t sleeping through the night. I discovered that out of 24 toddlers only six stayed asleep all night long.” …Robin, mother of thirteen-month-old Alicia

You must figure out where your own problem lies. Is it in your baby’s routine, in your management of it, or simply in the minds of others? If you can honestly say you want to change your baby’s sleep habits because they are truly disruptive to you and your family, then you’re ready to make changes. But if you feel coerced into changing Baby’s patterns because Great Grandma Beulah or your friend from playgroup says that’s the way it should be, it’s time for a long, hard think.

Certainly, if your little one is waking you up every hour or two, you don’t have to think long on the question, “Is this disruptive to me?” It obviously is. However, if your baby is waking up only once or twice a night, it’s important that you determine exactly how much this pattern is disturbing to you, and decide on a realistic goal. Be honest in assessing the situation’s effect on your life. Begin today by contemplating these questions:

  • Am I content with the way things are, or am I becoming resentful, angry, or frustrated?
  • Is my baby’s nighttime routine negatively affecting my marriage, job, or relationships with my other children?
  • Is my baby happy, healthy, and seemingly well rested?
  • Am I happy, healthy, and well rested?

Once you answer these questions, you will have a better understanding of not only what is happening with regard to your baby’s sleep, but also how motivated you are to make a change.

Reluctance to Let Go of Those Nighttime Moments

A good, long, honest look into your heart may truly surprise you. You may find you actually relish those quiet night wakings when no one else is around. I remember in the middle of one night, I lay nursing Coleton by the light of the moon. The house was perfectly, peacefully quiet. As I gently stroked his downy hair and soft baby skin, I marveled at this tiny being beside me-and the thought hit me, “I love this! I love these silent moments that we share in the night.” It was then that I realized that even though I struggled through my baby’s hourly nighttime wakings, I needed to want to make a change in our night waking habits before I would see any changes in his sleeping patterns.

You may need to take a look at your own feelings. And if you find you’re truly ready to make a change, you’ll need to give yourself permission to let go of this stage of your baby’s life and move on to a different phase in your relationship. There will be lots of time to hug, cuddle, and love your little one, but you must truly feel ready to move those moments out of your sleeping time and into the light of day.

Worry About Your Babies Safety

*** Find out more about baby sleep safety in our new ebook Your Twin Babies And You: Secrets To Ending Sleepless Nights.

We parents worry about our babies, and we should! With every night waking, as we have been tending to our child’s nightly needs, we have also been reassured that our baby is doing fine – every hour or two all night long. We get used to these checks; they provide continual reassurance of Baby’s safety.

“The first time my baby slept five straight hours, I woke up in a cold sweat. I nearly fell out of bed and ran down the hall. I was so sure that something was horribly wrong. I nearly wept when I found her sleeping peacefully.” …Azza, mother of seven-month-old Laila

Co-sleeping parents are not exempt from these fears. Even if you are sleeping right next to your baby, you’ll find that you have become used to checking on her frequently through the night. Even when she’s sleeping longer stretches, you aren’t sleeping, because you’re still on security duty.

These are very normal worries, rooted in your natural instincts to protect your baby. Therefore, for you to allow your baby to sleep for longer stretches, you’ll need to find ways to feel confident that your baby is safe-all night long.

Once you reassure yourself that your baby is safe while you sleep, you’ll have taken that first step toward helping her sleep all night.

Belief That Things Will Change on Their Own

You may hope, pray, and wish that one fine night, your baby will magically begin to sleep through the night. Maybe you’re crossing your fingers that he’ll just “outgrow” this stage, and you won’t have to do anything different at all. It’s a very rare night-waking baby who suddenly decides to sleep through the night all on his own. Granted, this may happen to you-but your baby may be two, three or four years old when it does! Decide now whether you have the patience to wait that long, or if you are ready to gently move the process along.

Too Fatigued to Work Toward Change

Change requires effort, and effort requires energy. In an exhausted state, we may find it easier just to keep things as they are than try something different.

In other words, when Baby wakes for the fifth time that night, and I’m desperate for sleep, it’s so much easier just to resort to the easiest way to get him back to sleep (using a baby swing, nurse, or replace the pacifier) than it is to try something different.

Only a parent who is truly sleep deprived can understand what I’m saying here. Others may calmly advise, “Well if things aren’t working for you, just change what you’re doing.” However, every night waking puts you in that foggy state where the only thing you crave is going back to sleep-plans and ideas seem like too much effort.

If you are to help your baby sleep all night, you will have to force yourself to make some changes and follow your plan, even in the middle of the night, even if it’s the tenth time your baby has called out for you.

So, after reading this section and you’re sure you and your baby are ready, it’s time for you to make a commitment to change. That is the first important step to helping your baby sleep through the night.

Part 2: Early Bedtime Means Better Baby Sleep

Early Bedtime Means Better Baby Sleep
by Elizabeth Pantley

In their efforts to encourage their baby to sleep better, one approach that many parents use is to put their baby to bed later in the evening. They think, “If he’s “really tired” he’ll sleep better, right?” Wrong! This often backfires because Baby becomes overtired, and chronically sleep-deprived.

In the majority of cases, a baby’s biological clock is preset for an early bedtime. When parents work with that time, a baby falls asleep more easily and stays asleep more peacefully. Most babies are primed to go to sleep for the night as early as 6:30 or 7:00 p.m. I often hear about how babies and toddlers have a “melt down” period at the end of the day, when they get fussy, whiny and out of sorts. I suspect that it’s simply a sign of over-tired children longing for sleep.

Early to bed, early to rise?

For babies, early to bed does not mean early to rise! Most babies sleep longer with an earlier bedtime.

Many parents are afraid to put their baby to bed so early, thinking that they will then face a 5 a.m. wake up call. But keeping your little one up too late backfires, and more often, a late night is the one followed by that early morning awakening.

My youngest child, two-year-old Coleton used to go to bed at 9:30, the time when my three older children went to bed, because it was convenient for me. At that time in the evening, it would take him a long time to get settled. I never connected his inability to settle with his late bedtime. When I started putting him to bed at 7:00, he fell asleep much more quickly and slept more soundly.

What About Working Parents?

If you are a working parent, and your evening with your little one begins at 6:30 or 7:00, you may find yourself torn between keeping your baby up for some playtime and getting him right to bed. You may find, though, that when your baby goes to sleep earlier, and sleeps better, he awakens in a pleasant mood, eager to play.

Because you have gotten a good night’s sleep, you can consider getting up earlier in the morning and saving some time before work to play with your baby, as an alternative to that late-evening play session.

You’ll both enjoy that special morning time. Later, when your baby is consistently sleeping all night, every night, you can move bedtime a little later and judge whether the difference affects your baby’s sleep.

Finding Your Baby’s Best Bedtime

It can take some experimentation to find your baby’s best bedtime. If you have been putting your baby to bed too late in the evening, you can approach this adjustment in one of two different ways:

  • Adjust your baby’s bedtime to be earlier by fifteen to thirty minutes every two or three nights. Pay attention to how easily your baby falls asleep as well as his awakening time and mood to gauge the effectiveness of the changes until you settle on his best bedtime, or
  • Beginning at around 6:30 p.m., watch your baby closely. As soon as he exhibits any signs of tiredness (fussing, losing interest in toys, looking glazed, yawning) put him right to bed, even if his previous bedtime has been 11:00 p.m. When you do this, keep your home quiet and the baby’s room dark so that it resembles his usual environment in the middle of the night. If this bedtime is substantially earlier than usual, your baby may think he’s going down for a nap and awaken after a short snooze. If he does this, respond very quickly so that he doesn’t fully awaken. Follow your usual method for helping him fall back to sleep, such as rocking or nursing; keep the room dark and quiet as you do during the middle of the night.

Here’s what Tammy, mother of seven-month-old Brooklyn had to say about changing her baby’s bedtime, “I had been waiting until 10:00 to put Brooklyn to bed because that’s when I go to sleep. But your suggestion made so much sense that last night I put her down at 8:00. I loved having the evening to spend with my husband. We haven’t spent that much time alone together in months! And the baby actually had a better night’s sleep. I’m happy that all our needs can be met in such a pleasant way.”

It may take a week or more of adjustment to settle into a new bedtime, but once you do, you’ll find that both you and your baby are happier.

Part 3: Newborn Babies and Sleep

Congratulations on the birth of your new baby. This is a glorious time in your life. Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, you will find this a time of recovery, adjustment, sometimes confusion and frustration, but – most wonderfully – of falling in love.

Babies younger than four months old have very different sleep needs than older babies. This article will help you understand your newborn baby’s developing sleep patterns, and will help you develop reasonable expectations when it comes to your baby and sleep.

Read, Learn, and Beware of Bad Advice

Absolutely everyone has an opinion about how you should handle sleep issues with your new baby. The danger to a new parent is that these tidbits of misguided advice (no matter how well-intentioned) can truly have a negative effect on our parenting skills and, by extension, our babies’ development…if we are not aware of the facts.

The more knowledge you have the less likely that other people will make you doubt your parenting decisions.

When you have your facts straight, and when you have a parenting plan, you will be able to respond with confidence to those who are well-meaning but offering contrary or incorrect advice.

So, your first step is to get smart! Know what you are doing, and know why you are doing it. Read books and magazines, attend classes or support groups – it all helps.

The Biology of Newborn Sleep

During the early months of your baby’s life, he sleeps when he is tired, it’s really that simple. You can do very little to force a new baby to sleep when he doesn’t want to sleep, and conversely, you can do little to wake him up when he is sleeping soundly

Part 4: Regular Naps Improve Nighttime Sleep

According to sleep research, and motherly experience, the length and the quality of naps affect nighttime sleep. (And, conversely, nighttime sleep affects naps.)

Babies differ in their napping needs – but here’s a general guide that applies to most babies:

Age Number of Naps Hours of Naptime
4 Months 3 4-6
6 Months 2 3-4
9 Months 2 2 1/4-4
12 Months 1-2 2-3
2 Years 1 1-2
3 Years 1 1-1 1/2

When should your baby nap?

Timing of naps is important. A nap too late in the day will negatively affect nighttime sleep. Certain times of the day are better for napping because they suit your baby’s biological clock; these optimum periods balance sleep and wake time to affect nighttime sleep in the most positive way.

All babies are different, but generally, the best nap times are as follows:

  • If baby takes three naps: midmorning/early afternoon/early evening
  • If baby takes two naps: midmorning/early afternoon
  • If baby takes one nap: early afternoon

Watch your baby’s sleepy signals!

Naps should happen immediately when your baby shows signs of tiredness. If you wait too long, she becomes overtired, “wired up,” and unable to sleep.

Once you are familiar with the your baby’s nap needs you can plan a nap routine to start the wind-down process. If consistent naps are new to you look more for your baby’s signs of tiredness and scrimp on the routine until you settle into a predictable pattern.

In other words, don’t begin a lengthy pre-nap routine if your baby is clearly ready to sleep! Watch for these signs of fatigue; your baby may demonstrate one or more of these:

  • decreasing activity
  • quieting down
  • losing interest in people and toys
  • rubbing eyes
  • looking “glazed”
  • fussing
  • yawning
  • laying down
  • caressing a lovey or asking for a pacifier, bottle or to nurse

Timing is very, very important!

You have probably experienced this scenario: Your baby looks tired and you think, “Time for a nap.” So, you wash her hands and face, change her diaper, answer a phone call, put out the dog, and head for baby’s crib or the family bed, only to find that she’s suddenly wide awake and anxious to play!

What happened? She has moved through her window of tiredness and gotten that “second wind” that buys her another hour or two of alert time before she re-enters her tired state. This can often happen later in the day.

Suddenly, your baby is (finally!) ready for a nap at dinnertime, and the plot thickens- do you put her for a late nap and thus extend bedtime, or keep her awake and deal with a tired, fussy baby? Rather than face this ordeal, respond earlier to her signs of fatigue and get her in for her nap right at that time.

Once you have watched your baby carefully for a week or so, you should be able to create a nap schedule that works with her daily periods of alertness and tiredness, thus making your nap schedule easy to adhere to.

The nap routine

Once you’ve established a nap schedule for your baby, it is very helpful if you create a simple but specific nap routine. This routine should be different from your nighttime routine, although it can have similarities that signal sleep- for example, the presence of a lovely or special sleep-inducing music.

Follow your nap routine the same way every day. (Except, as I mentioned before, if your baby is showing clear signs of being tired and ready to sleep. Then abbreviate or even eliminate your routine for that day.)

For a reluctant napper, your routine might include some relaxing motion, such as rocking/relaxing in a swing/walking in a sling or stroller for twins, and some gentle lullaby music.

A nap routine doesn’t have to be long and involved to be effective. If your baby’s nap occurs about the same time every day there will be many subtle cues, such as the timing of his lunch, that tell your baby that nap time is nearing.

Better naps mean better nighttime sleep.

Part 5: Write a Family Bestseller — My Sleep Book

Once your baby is over a year old, she begins to understand more about life. She is probably able to follow simple instructions, such as, “Please put this on the shelf.” Most babies at this age enjoy reading books – especially books with pictures of real babies.

You can use this love of books to help you encourage your baby to sleep through the night. You can do this by writing your baby his own book about sleep. Here’s how:

Use poster board or very heavy paper. Your book should be large – 8 ½” X 11″ or bigger. Tape the pages together with heavy tape.

Title your book All About [insert baby’s name]. It will depict the story of your baby’s life, with the focus on sleeping — and/or weaning, if you want to use this idea to help wean baby from the breast or bottle.

You can also use this idea to wean baby from the pacifier, or for that matter, to help baby adjust to any major change in her life, such as introducing a new pregnancy, or dealing with divorce.

Gather pictures of your baby right from the time of birth. Start with a shot of her as a newborn, and progress through her life, finishing up with those that feature actions and items in your bedtime routine. Pictures of baby breastfeeding, taking a bottle, using a pacifier, wearing pajamas, reading a book, lying in bed, and sleeping, are the most helpful.

If possible, get a new roll of film and take photos of your baby during every step of your current bedtime routine – including several of him sleeping soundly. In one of the sleeping photos, have Mommy or Daddy in the background smiling and looking at baby.

Don’t make the book so long that your little one will lose interest, since the ending is, after all, the real goal of the book. You know your own baby and how long of a book she enjoys. The last section of the book will be your bedtime and sleep (and/or weaning) goals, outlined very clearly and specifically.

Read this book every night. (Your baby may like it so much that she wants to read it during the day, too – and that’s perfectly fine!) Talk about what you read. Help your little one do the things you talk about in the book.

As you use this homemade book, also put into action a complete sleep plan for your baby. Step-by-step, and night-by-night your baby will move closer to sleeping all night long.

Part 6: Should I Let My Baby Cry it Out?

Does it takes forever for your baby to fall asleep? Does he or she only fall asleep if you breastfeed, give a bottle or pacifier, rock, carry, swing, take a ride in the car, or perform other elaborate rituals? Does your baby wake up frequently throughout the night? Are your sleep issues further complicated because your baby won’t nap easily, or takes very short naps?

Do you ever feel like Leesa, mother of 9-month-old Kyra who said, “I am truly distressed, as the lack of sleep is starting to affect all aspects of my life. I feel as though I can’t carry on an intelligent conversation. I am extremely unorganized and don’t have the energy to even attempt reorganization. I love this child more than anything in the world, and I don’t want to make her cry, but I’m near tears myself thinking about going to bed every night. Sometimes I think, ‘What’s the point? I’ll just be up in an hour anyway.'”

As your sleep issues cast lengthening shadows over your life, you may begin to live purely for the moment. Your sleep-deprived, foggy brain may focus so intently on sleep that you can’t think beyond the next few hours of rest.

You may have one – or many – people telling you that you should just let your baby cry to sleep. You are probably frustrated and confused. What you lack is perspective. To gain that perspective, ask yourself these questions:

  • Where will I be five years from now?
  • How will I look back on this time?
  • Will I be proud of how I handled my baby’s sleep routines, or will I regret my actions?
  • How will the things I do with my baby today affect the person he will become in the future?

Once you have some perspective about your baby’s current sleep issues, it is important to be realistic in determining your goals and to be honest in assessing the situation’s effect on your life.

Some people can handle two night wakings easily, while others find that the effect of even one night waking is just too much to handle. The key is to evaluate whether your baby’s sleep schedule is a problem in your eyes, or just in those of the people around you.

Begin today by contemplating these questions:

  • Am I content with the way things are, or am I becoming resentful, angry, or frustrated?
  • Is my baby’s nighttime routine negatively affecting my marriage, my job, or my relationships with my other children?
  • Is my baby happy, healthy, and seemingly well rested?
  • Am I happy, healthy, and well rested?
  • What is a reasonable expectation for my baby at his/her age?
  • What naptime and bedtime situation would I consider “acceptable”?
  • What naptime and bedtime situation would I consider “pure bliss”?
  • Why do I want to change my baby’s sleep patterns? Is it truly what’s best for me and my baby, or am I doing this to meet someone else’s expectations?
  • Am I willing to be patient and make a gradual, gentle change for my baby if that means no crying?

Once you answer these questions, you will have a better understanding of not only what is happening with regard to your baby’s sleep, but what approach you will feel most comfortable using to help your baby sleep better.

In addition to my two-year-old son Coleton, I have three older children, and they have afforded me the perspective I lacked the first time around. My children have taught me how very quickly babyhood passes.

I struggle now to remember the difficulties of those first couple years, so fleeting are they. And I am proud that I didn’t cave in to the pressures of others around us to do what they felt was right; instead I followed my heart as I gently nurtured all of my babies. That time is long gone for us, but those memories remain. And now, all four of them sleep through the night. And so do I.

Part 7: Wonderful Sounds for Sleep

The environment that your baby enjoyed for nine long months in the womb was not one of absolute quiet. There was a constant symphony of sound — your heartbeat and fluids rushing in and out of the placenta. (Remember those sounds from when you listened to your baby’s heartbeat with the Doppler stethoscope?)

Research indicates that “white noise” sounds or soft bedtime music helps many babies to relax and fall asleep more easily. This is most certainly because these sounds create an environment more familiar to your baby than a very quiet room.

Many people enjoy using soothing music as their baby’s sleep sound. If you do, choose bedtime music carefully. Some music (including jazz and much classical music) is too complex and stimulating. For music to be soothing to your baby, pick simple, repetitive, predictable music, like traditional lullabies.

Tapes created especially for putting babies to sleep are great choices. Pick something that you will enjoy listening to night after night, too. (Using a tape player with an automatic repeat function is helpful for keeping the music going as long as you need it to play.)

There are widely available, and very lovely, “nature sounds” tapes that work nicely, too, as well those small sound-generating or white-noise devices and clocks you may have seen in stores.

The sounds on these — raindrops, a bubbling brook or running water — often are similar to those sounds your baby heard in utero. A ticking clock or a bubbling fish tank also make wonderful white-noise options.

“I went out today and bought a small aquarium and the humming noise does seem to relax Chloe and help her to sleep. I didn’t buy any fish though. Who has time to take care of fish when you’re half asleep all day?” Tanya, mother of 13-month-old Chloe

You can find some suitable tapes and CDs made especially for babies or those made for adults to listen to when they want to relax. Whatever you choose, listen to it first and ask yourself: Does this relax me? Would it make me feel sleepy if I listened to it in bed?

If you must put your baby to sleep in a noisy, active house full of people, keeping the tape running (auto rewind) will help mask baby-waking noises like dishes clanking, people talking, siblings giggling, TV, dogs barking, etc.

This can also help transition your sleeping baby from a noisy daytime house to which he’s become accustomed subconsciously to one of absolute nighttime quiet.

Once your baby is familiar with his calming noise, or music, you can use these to help your baby fall back to sleep when he wakes up in the middle of the night. Simply sooth him by playing the music (very quietly) during the calming and falling-asleep time. If he wakes and cries, repeat this process.

If your baby gets used to his sleep time sounds you can take advantage of this and take the tape with you if you will be away from home for naptime or bedtime. The familiarity of these sounds will help your baby sleep in an unfamiliar environment.

Eventually your baby will rely on this technique less and less to fall and stay asleep. Don’t feel you must rush the process; there is no harm in your baby falling asleep to these gentle sounds.

When you are ready to wean him of these you can help this process along by reducing the volume by a small amount every night until you finally don’t turn the music or sounds on at all.

Babies enjoy these peaceful sounds, and they are just one more piece in the puzzle that helps you to help your baby sleep – gently, without any crying at all.

Conjoined Twins

Last Updated–July 14, 2003) There is an extremely rare form of identical twins that occurs perhaps in one out of every 75,000 to 100,000 births or 1 in 200 deliveries of identical twins, that of conjoined twins.

Conjoined twins originate from a single fertilized egg so they are always identical and same-sex twins. The developing embryo starts to split into identical twins within the first two weeks after conception but then stops before completion, leaving a partially separated egg which continues to mature into a conjoined fetus.

The birth of two connected babies can be extremely traumatic and approximately 40-60% of these births are delivered stillborn with 35% surviving just one day. The overall survival rate of conjoined twins is somewhere between 5-25% and historical records over the past 500 years detail about 600 surviving sets of conjoined twins with more than 70% of those surviving pairs resulting in female twins.

While there are dozens of types of conjoined twins, doctors generally divide the types into the more common variations described in the below chart. All of these types can be more broadly categorized as displaying either equal and symmetrical forms or unequal and possible asymmetrical forms.

Scientific TermDescription
CraniopagusTwins are joined at the cranium (the top of the head or skull). Occuring in just 2% of all conjoined twin cases, this is a very difficult type of twin to separate although advances in medicine have led to more than 35 successful separations. Two female craniopagus twins were successful separated in Lithuania in 1989, for example.
ThoraopagusThe most common form of conjoined twins, occuring in between 35-40% of all cases. The twins share part of the chest wall, possibly including sharing the heart.
PygopagusTwins are likely positioned back-to-back and usually have a posterior connecton at the rump. Occurs in almost 20% of documented cases.
IschiopagusAbout 6% of all conjoined twins have this condition, with the twins joined by the coccyx (lowest part of the backbone) and the sacrum (backbone immediately above the coccyx).
OmphalopagusTwins are united from the waist to the lower breastbone, probably accounting for about 34% of conjoined cases.
DicephalusOne body with two separate heads and necks. Abigail and Brittany Hensel of the United States are an example of this very rare type of conjoined twin. The Tocci Brothers, Scottish Brothers and Ritta and Christina were also examples of this type of conjoined twin.

Perhaps the most famous pair of conjoined twins were Eng and Chang Bunker (shown above as young adults), who were born in Siam (now Thailand) on May 10, 1811 and died within hours of each other on January 17, 1874 at age 62. The Bunker Twins fathered 21 children between them and were successful businessman and ranchers in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Attached by a five-inch connecting ligament near their breastbones, Eng and Chang married sisters Sallie and Adelaide Yates, respectively, and lived fairly private lives when they weren’t touring the world to earn incomes. After their deaths it was determined they could have been successfully separated, a medical option that was never offered to Eng and Chang during their lives.

Although Eng and Chang’s fame helped coin the phrase ‘Siamese Twins’, they were not the first pair of conjoined twins recorded in medical annals as there were probably about 100 such pairs known by the time of their 1811 births, a fact which helped the King of Siam reverse an early death sentence on the brothers. In fact, conjoined twins were recorded as early as 945 in Armenia and the first pair of successfully separated twins took place in 1689 by German physician G. König.

While there aren’t any documented cases of conjoined triplets, there have been triplet births that featured conjoined twins, most recently Nida and Hira Jamal of Pakistan. Although the two Craniopagus girls were successfully separated, tragically Nira’s heart wasn’t strong enough after the separation and she died shortly after the operation.

Today, most pairs of conjoined twins are successfully identified during prenatal examinations. Some types of conjoined twins are much easier to separate while other rare forms lead to complicated and costly procedures that can lead to difficult ethical and moral decisions of separation surgery, especially if the twins share internal organs (the case of Baby Jodie and Baby Mary in England in 2000 being a perfect example). The European case (their parents are from the Maltese island of Gozo) in which one baby was allowed to die during surgery brings back memories of conjoined sisters Angela and Amy Lakeberg of Indiana, who also shared just one heart when born. They were separated August 20, 1993 in a ceremony in which Amy was allowed to die. Tragically, Angela died less than a year later. According to the book ‘Entwined Lives‘, there have been approximately 200 attempted surgical separations of conjoined twins, with 90% of these occurring after 1950. Three-quarters of the procedures since 1950 have resulted in one or both of the twins surviving.

Several hospitals across the world specialize in these often difficult surgeries. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has performed more than a dozen successful separation surgeries since its first operation in 1957 (most recently performing one on 7-month-old twin girls on March 1, 2001), while physicians such as Dr. Rich Hampton of the Pediatric Surgical Associates in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, successful separated Keri and Kaci Archer in October, 1991. The Children’s Hospital of Boston has operated on nine sets of conjoined twins (as of the mid 1990’s, current numbers not available). Raffles Hospital in Singapore took on the extremely difficult operation of separating 29-year-old Iranian conjoined twins Ladan and Laleh Bijani in July, 2003. While they were able to successfully separate the skulls of this craniopagus set of twins, tragically they were not able to successfully separate the blood stems from their two separate brains and both ladies died on the operating table on July 8th, 2003.

There are organizations which can help parents of conjoined twins address some of the issues they will face during their pregnancies or while raising their children. Conjoined Twins International, based in Prescott, Arizona, was founded in 1987 by a grandfather of conjoined twins. The organization gives advice and support to a little more than half of the families of conjoined twins currently living in the United States. The last known telephone number and email we were aware of for this group was 520-445-2770 and this email address.

A Chronological History of Conjoined Twins

Although there were probably earlier incidents of births of conjoined twins, the earliest recorded reference was a set of identical conjoined boys (the Armenian Twins) in 945 in Constantinople, connected from the waist to the abdomen. Initially admired as a curiousity, they were later thought to be bad omens and exiled. An attempted surgical separation caused the death of one of the twins, with the survivor dying three days later. (reported in Bulletin on the History of Medicine, 58 in 1984).

Perhaps the most famous conjoined twins born before Eng and Chang were the Biddenden Maids, Mary and Eliza Chulkhurst of Biddenden, Kent, England, who were born to a wealthy family in 1100 and lived until 1134. They were joined at the hips (although illustrations sometimes mistakingly show they were also joined at the shoulders) and bequeathed their family fortune to the Church. For centuries following their death (until the early 1900’s), an annual celebration was held in Biddenden in which biscuits displaying their images were distributed to the poor on Easter. Today, the 20 acres that the sisters bequeathed to the Church contains cottages known as the Chulkhurst Estate. Following the death of one sister, the second twin refused to be separated, supposedly saying, “As we came together, we will also go together,” dying six hours later.

A set of conjoined boys joined at the back was born in Glasgow, Scotland in the late 15th Century (we’ve seen it reported as both 1475 and 1490) and survived for 28 years (either 1503 or 1518), dying five days apart. They lived under the patronage of the King of Scotland, James IV. The most complete information we’ve read on these Scottish Brothers was in the book, The Two-Headed Boy & Other Medical Marvels by Jan Bonderon (Cornell University Press, 2000). According to that author, the brothers lived from 1490-1518 and spoke eight different languages, English, Irish, Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Danish. They were also avid singers. They were dicephalus tetrabrachius twins (two torsos, 4 arms, 2 heads, 1 pair of legs).

There are also reports of a pair of girls born in 1495 near Worms who were joined at the forehead. A 1983 Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences essay relays the supposed origin of the birth occuring when two women (one of whom was pregnant) were having a conversation and had a collision with their heads. The pregnant woman became frightened and passed the mark of her concussion onto her unborn twins.

The first autopsy in the New World is performed in 1533 on a pair of conjoined twin sisters in Santo Domingo. According to the book, Twins: Nature’s Amazing Mystery, it is conducted at the request of a priest who had baptized both children but wished to determine as to whether one or two souls were involved.

A celebrated pair of omphalopagus parasiticus conjoined twins, Lazarus and Joannes Baptista (John the Baptist) Colloredo, are born on March 20, 1617 in Genua, Italy. Lazarus and his parasitic twin tour throughout Europe for most of his life (it is believed the twins die in the late 1640’s or early 1650’s) as detailed in the book The Two-Headed Boy & Other Medical Marvels by Jan Bonderon (Cornell University Press, 2000). Several poems and short stories are written about the pair, including this excerpt from ‘Ballard of The Two Inseperable Brothers’ by Martin Parker.

“A Gentleman well qualifide,
Doth beare his brother at his side,
inseperably Knit,
As in this figure you may see,
And both together living be
the world admires at it.
Doctors who examined the medical histories of the twins believe that they began as two equally sized omphalopagus conjoined twins but that John the Baptist’s body lost contact with the umbiblical vesicle and certain body parts began to atrophy.

The first set of conjoined twins to successfully be separated was a pair of twins who were born together in Basle in 1689. Connected by a one-inch long and five-inch diameter band, they were separated although we’ve seen different reports as to which doctor performed the surgery. According to the Irving and Amy Wallace biography of Chang and Eng, The Two, the surgery was performed by a celebrated physician, Dr. Fatio, who supposedly employed six surgical wires to medically separate them. Dr. Nancy Segal’s book, Entwined Lives, makes reference to a German physician G. König as performing the operation.

The History of Conjoined Twins (1700-1799)

A famous set of conjoined sisters were born on October 26, 1701, the Hungarian Sisters, Helen and Judith. Shown below in a drawing that doesn’t appear to be accurate, they were actually connected at the back and had only one set of legs between them and were thus believed to be pygopagus twins. They spent much of their childhood performing in fairs throughout Europe in England, Holland, Germany and Italy but moved to a convent at age nine. They lived until age 22 with one sister dying of fever and the other passing on shortly thereafter with no evident signs of illness Their lives were also chronicled in a poem by Alexander Pope.

The History of Conjoined Twins (1800-1899)

Perhaps the best-known set of conjoined twins and the ones who were first given the name “Siamese Twins” were Chang and Eng, who were born on a houseboat in the village of Mekong in what was then known as Siam on May 11, 1811. Born to a farming family, they were the fifth and sixth children of their mother Nok and their father, Ti-eye. The couple would later have three additional children. Connected by a five-inch band of cartilage between their breastbones (which would expand slightly as they aged), Chang and Eng were dipolopagus twins, completely symmetrical and most probably could have been separated during their lives.

Chang and Eng led celebrated lives, they spent much of their childhood living with King Rama III in Bangkok before traveling to America in 1829. Arriving in the United States, they added a surname, Bunker, most probably because of their friendship with a family with that name. The two toured extensively throughtout the world for most of their lives before settling down to live as farmers in Wilkesboro, North Carolina in 1839. It was in the North Carolina hills that Chang and Eng met their wives, marrying sisters Adelaide and Sallie Yates, respectively.

The two families led relatively prosperous lives and combined to parent 21 children. They died witihn hours of each other on January 17, 1874 at age 62. For more on their rich lives, we suggest reading The Two, Chang and Eng: A Novel or visiting The Hypenated Life Web Site. One of the Bunker Twins descendents, Michael Bunker, maintains an informative web site on his family here at twinstuff.

A sad fate awaited the Sardinian Twins, Ritta and Christina (shown below), who were born in Sassari, Sardinia in 1829. The eighth and ninth children of poor parents, the twins died of cold at just 8 months and 11 days (Nov. 23, 1829) when their parents took them to Paris to be exhibited. Their skeleton is still preserved in Paris. They were Dicephali Twins with 2 legs, 2 upper bodies, 4 arms and 2 heads.

While Chang and Eng were garnering most of the headlines during this era, another remarkable pair of conjoined twins, Millie and Christine McKoy, the Two-Headed Nightingale, were also living in North Carolina. These two twins were born into slavery in Columbus County, North Carolina on July 11, 1851, weighing a remarkable combined 17 pounds at birth (Christine, the stronger baby, likely weighed a dozen of those 17 pounds). The twins were fluent in five languages and were accomplished pianists, singers and dancers who toured the world performing, with many of those years as featured performers of PT Barnum’s traveling shows. They died on October 8 and 9, 1912 as Millie succombed to tuburculosis and Christine was then given massive doses of morphine before also passing on from eight to 17 hours later. For more on Millie-Christine, we recommend reading the book, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made.

Another well-known set who lived during this era were Giavanni and Giacomo Tocci, the inspiration for Mark Twain’s Those Extraordinary Twins. The Tocci Twins were born in Locana, Italy on October 4, 1877 and lived until 1940. They were one body below their sixth rib and two bodies above with each brother controlling one of their legs (dicephalus twins). They were quite artistic, spoke three languages, perhaps married sisters (it is unclear), and lived their final 40 years in relative seclusion near Venice, Italy.

According to the book, The Two-Headed Boy & Other Medical Marvels by Jan Bonderon (Cornell University Press, 2000), the Tocci Twins were born to a 19-year-old mother and 32-year-old father, who fainted when first presented his newborn sons. After their parents exploited the pair during extensive tours, both the family and twins made a great deal of money, allowing the twins to retire at an early age (at age 20).

Another set of dicephalus twins, Mina and Minnie Finley, were born in Mt. Gilead, Ohio on October 12, 1870. The twin girls lived to be just 13 months before passing away. They were connected at the lower lims and had two heads, four arms and four legs. Their casts reside in the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania today.

A rare example of parasitic conjoined twins was the sideshow performer, Jean Libbera, who was born in Rome, Italy in 1884, with a conjoined twin, Jacques, growing from his torso. He was the fourth of 13 children in his family and the third child in the family also had the same type of parasitic twin, but died shortly after birth. The People of the Sideshow Web Site has a biography and photo of Jean and Jacques.

Another early pair of twins who were separated briefly were the Orissa Sisters, Radica and Doadica, who were born in India in either 1888 or 1889. They were separated by a French physician after one of the sisters contracted tuberculosis with Doadica dying immediately following the separation and Radica dying two years later also to tuberculosis.

The History of Conjoined Twins (1900-1949)

Another well-known pair of conjoined sisters, Daisy and Violet Hilton, were born in England in 1908. The two sisters were joined at the hips and appeared in two movies together, Freaks (as youngsters) and Chained for Life, while also performing on the stage. A Broadway musical on the Hilton’s lives, Side Show, premiered in 1997 to generally good reviews but closed after just three months of performances. Daisy was very briefly married to a gentleman named Don but their marriage was annulled after just 10 days (the plot of Chained for Life also has one of the sisters getting married). The sisters both passed away in 1969.

A pair of vaudeville stars from the Phillipines, Simplicio and Lucio Godina lived from 1908-36. They were married to twin (not conjoined) sisters, with whom they performed on stage. The Godina Twins were accomplished dancers and roller skaters and quite dissimilar in appearance. Lucio died from pneumonia at age 28 after which successful separation surgery was performed to save Simplicio. Unfortunately, he too died a few days later due to an infection in his nervous system.

Conjoined twins Mary and Margaret Gibb were born May 20, 1912 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, joined at the buttocks. The twins avoided attempts to be separated, even after Margaret developed cancer and they died minutes apart on August 29, 1967. The Gibb Twins were quite different in appearance, Mary was two inches shorter than her sister and much heavier. For a nice web page with some pictures on the Gibb Twins, please visit this site.

Another set of conjoined twins were also born in 1912 as sisters Guadalupe and Josephine Hinojosa were born in Havana, Cuba on November 15, 1912. Based on photos we’ve seen of the twins, we believe they were thoraopagus twins.

On March 30, 1922, 34-year-old conjoined twin Josepha Blazak died of jaundice in Chicago with her sister Rosa succombing two days later. The Blazek’s were born in Skerychov, Bohemia on January 20, 1878. Joined at the pelvis area, the two attracted headlines in 1900 when Rosa gave birth to a baby boy in Prague. The boy’s father was willing to marry Rosa but the courts forbade the marriage.

Conjoined sisters Yvonne and Yvette MacArthur were born in 1949 in Los Angeles and died together in 1993. The sisters had separate hearts and brains but were fused together at the head and could not be separated.

The History of Conjoined Twins (1950-1969)

The rarest type of conjoined twins, Dicephales tetrabrachius dipus (two heads, four arms and two legs) are born in Russia on January 4, 1950–Masha and Dasha Krivoshyapovy. Actually, Masha and Dasha share a vestigal (non-functioning) third leg. They received quite a bit of international publicity as children but have been out of the public limelight for quite some time now although a recent picture of the two was featured in the 2001 Guinness Book of World Records (shown below). They were the oldest surviving conjoined (non-separated) twins in the world at the beginning of the year 2003, but some unverified media accounts indicate that both twins passed away in April, 2003.

The United States’ oldest surviving non-separated conjoined twins, Ronnie and Donnie Galyon are born on October 28, 1952 in Dayton, Ohio. Long-time sideshow performers, they are now retired from show business but still occasionally appear on TV. They were profiled on the Jerry Springer Show on April 21, 1997 and were also interviewed on the 1998 Discovery Channel documentary, ‘Joined at Birth’.

One of the earliest 20th century examples of a successful separation of conjoined twins is performed on March 29, 1955 as Dr. Dragstedt at the University of Chicago performs surgery on Prisna and Napit Atkinson, who were born in Thailand in May, 1953. We heard from the Atkinson Twins’ niece, who reported to us in an email that her aunts are successful and doing well and that both are married and live in the United States.

Another less successful separation of conjoined twins joined at the head were the Brodie Twins, who were separated in 1952. One twin, Roger, died a month after the surgery, while the other brother Rodney Dee survived the operation, only to die at age 11 on May 28, 1963.

A pair of four-armed dicephalus twins are born near Petersburg, Indiana in the United States on December 12, 1953 with the birth of twins Danny Kaye and Donald Ray Hartley. Despite cardiac problems with the twins, they were improving and allowed to go home with their parents. A Life Magazine article profiled the family, but tragically the twins died at four months due to acute cardiac dilatation. As you can see in the pictures below, the twins had two spines united to a single pelvis.

An extremely rare case of conjoined male-female twins is born in 1957 as reported in the 1988 book Twinning and Twins. It is suspected that pseudohermaphroditism, a condition where external genitals resemble that of the opposite sex, exists in one of the twins.

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia performs its first separation in 1957, separating Pamela and Patricia Schatz joined at the buttocks. One of the twins, Pamela, dies at age 9 following open-heart surgery; the other, Patricia, survives the separation and is now married.

Another successful separation is performed in the state of Oregon as Denett and Jeanett Stubblefield from Parma, Idaho (born June 29, 1959) are separated at Doernbecher Hospital in Portland on October 18, 1959. The two girls were born joined at the abdomen and chest. Tragically, Jeanett dies of pneumonia six months after the surgery. We have an update on the Stubblefield Family in our Twin Talk area.

On September 11, 1961 conjoined twin sisters Karen and Kate Yong are born in Kandang Kerbau Hospital in Singapore. Joined at the chest and abdomen, the twins were separated in surgery conducted at Singapore General Hospital on December 11, 1961, but tragically Kate died of complications arising from the lack of skin on December 12, surviving for just 15 hours following the surgery. Karen Yong is still alive at age 42 as of this writing (October, 2003). Here’s a little more on these twins.

A week later, on September 18, 1961 conjoined twin sisters Lori and Reba (Dori) Schappell are born in Reading, Pennsylvania. The sisters have been featured on numerous TV shows and are believed to be the only set of adult living conjoined twins in the United States who are joined at the head. Reba, who has a musical career and who received a L.A. Music Award in 1997 for best new country artist, has several medical conditions that require her to to sit in a special stool which is steered by her sister. They live independently in Pennsylvania.

Conjoined sisters Juraci and Nadir Climerio de Oliveria were born in Brazil in 1957, sharing just one intestinal and renal system. They live in a Maternity Hospital in Salvador until dying at age 17 in 1974.

In May, 1965, conjoined sisters Guiseppina and Santina Foglia were successfully separated after being fused together from birth at the base of the spine. They went on to live normal lives in their home in Asti, Italy.

In the late 1960’s conjoined twin sisters, Ganga and Jamuna Mondal, are born in India. They have separate heads, hearts and lungs, but are joined at the stomach and share a single liver, fused bowel track and a single genital. The still-living twin sisters travel together as part of the Dreamland Circus in India. One of the twins gives birth to a baby girl in the mid 1990’s, but the baby dies shortly after its birth.

The History of Conjoined Twins (1970-1979)

Several examples of successfully separated conjoined twins born during this decade (with their separation dates, if known) include Lisa and Elisa Hansen of Utah (1979), Chun-yi and Chun-jen Chang of China (conjoined from the waist down with three legs) (1977), Andrew and Grant Priestly of Australia, and Clara and Altagracia Rodriguez (1974). The September, 1974 separation of the Rodriguez Twins from the Dominican Republic was performed at The Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia by Dr. Everett C. Koop (later the Surgeon General of the United States and a veteran of several separation surgeries who was quoted in The Washington Post in 1988 as saying “I am willing to take any reasonable risk to separate Siamese twins because of the grotesque future they face”). A team of 23 doctors performed the surgery on the 13-month-old ischiopagus girls (they shared one liver and parts of the same colon). Both babies survive the separation, but Alta dies at age three after choking on a bean. Clara lives a healthy life in the Dominican Republic.

A set of conjoined sisters is born in Iran on January 17th, 1974, Laleh and Ladan Bijani. Connected at the head, they underwent separation surgery in July, 2003 that tragically resulted in the death of both of the sisters. You can read more on their tragic deaths in this forum.

Conjoined twin brothers, Charles and Charleu da Luz Tenório are born in Arcoverde, Brazil in 1973. Successfully separated by Dr. Paulo Rabello at nine months of age, the two 27-year-old twins are still quite close today and live in Recife, Brazil. They are complete mirror-image identical twins with Charleau’s heart on his right side, and Charles on his left side.

A set of conjoined sisters is born in Great Britain in 1970, Anna and Barbara Rosycki. Anna & Barbara were separated at birth. They were omphalopagus sharing a liver. It was considered the first successful separation in England.

The History of Conjoined Twins (1980-1989)

Several examples of successfully separated conjoined twins born during this decade (with their separation dates) include Fonda Michelle and Shannon Elaine Beaver of North Carolina (born on February 9, 1980, separated in 1981), Claire and Emily Taylor of Madison, Wisconsin (ischio-omphalopagus tripus twins who were separated in 1984 at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia by Dr. James O’Neill), Hassan and Hussein Saleh of Sudan (ischio-omphalopagus tripus twins who were separated in London in 1986), and Vilija and Vitalija Tamulevicius of Lithuania (May 27 1987). The Tamulevicius twins are occipital craniopagus twins who are successfully separated in Moscow in 1989..

There were several reports of conjoined twins born in Vietnam following the use of Agent Orange during the Vietnam War, including the story of conjoined twin brothers, Viet and Duc, born near Plateau de Kontum in southern Vietnam in February, 1981. Connected at the hip (ischio-omphalopagus tripus), and sharing some internal organs, the two twins were medically separated in 1988 at Tu Du Hospital, two years after Viet had survived a critical brain disease. The two were separated and Duc is a healthy young man today, while Viet is also alive but in very poor health.

On March 2, 1982, Emily and Francesca Selvaggio are born conjoined together. They are separated in a 10-hour, 22-person surgery conducted at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, that prestigious institution’s first successful separation. A recent update indicates that Francesca is a successful college student but that her twin sister suffers from a very serious form of cerebral palsy.

Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore performs a delicate separation surgery on West German twins, Patrick and Benjamin Binder on September 6, 1987. The 22-hour surgery separates the two eight-month-old boys who were joined at the backs of their heads. The boys have numerous post-surgery complications but do survive. Incidentally, this surgery is believed to be the first successful separation of conjoined twins connected at the back of the head and was led by Dr. Ben Carson, Sr., a pioneer in brain surgery techniques.

Another breakthrough separation surgery took place in South Africa in May, 1988 when conjoined twins Mpho and Mphonyana Mathibela were successfully separated after being born joined together at the head. It was the first such operation performed successfully in South Africa. Mphonyana died in 1990. Mpho is mildly retarded and hemiplegic (paralyzed in one side of her body), and can no longer attend school because of the family’s financial situation.

A pair of ischio-omphalopagus tripus twin boys, Andrew and Alex Olson, born in Elk Point, South Dakota in 1987, are successfully separated in surgery performed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha on April 22-23, 1988. Despite physical disabilities, the twin boys lead normal lives as teenagers.

Rare three-armed dicephalus twins are born in Ireland with the 1989 birth of conjoined twins, Katie and Eilish. They are separated in 1992 at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London although Katie dies three days following the surgery.

The History of Conjoined Twins (1990-1999)

A set of Dicephalus Twins, Abigail and Brittany Hensel are born in 1990 in Minnesota. This is an extremely rare type of conjoined twins that has believed to resulted in live births only four times. Today, the two sisters share one body with two heads and are perfectly normal young girls who love to swim, play baseball and other sports. They share one liver, bladder, intestines and reproductive organs but have distinct nervous systems. The two have been featured on numerous TV shows (including ‘Joined at Birth’ on the Discovery Channel) and Time and Life Magazine.

A similar pair of Dicephalus Twins, Eilish and Katie Holton of Ireland, are attempted to be separated in 1992 at age three at the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London. The Holton twins were born with four arms (the Hensels had a third arm removed from their forehead as infants) and undergo a 15-hour operation under the care of 25 doctors. Katie dies of heart problems four days after surgery, Eilish survives and now uses an artificial leg to move around.

We’re not sure of their birth date, but we believe that conjoined twin sisters, Gita and Zita, are born in Kirgistan in Central Asia around 1992. As detailed in a German magazine, the twin girls were 10 years old in 2002 and are currently living in a hospital in Munich where doctors hope one day to be able to separate the pair who are connected at the abdomen and share many internal organs.

Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, the same hospital that provided medical care for the world’s first surviving octuplets in 1998, successfully separates Beaumont, Texas twins Tiesha and Iesha Turner on June 9, 1992. The girls were born joined at the chest and abdomen on April 19, 1991. A story on the five-year anniversary of their separation surgery reported that TCH had seen 11 sets of conjoined twins since 1964 with three successful separations.

A rare set of triplets with a conjoined twin set is born in Pakistan on October 8, 1992, Nida, Hira and Fariel Jamal. The twins, Nida and Hira are joined at the head and brought to the United States to be separated in 1995. The surgery is initially thought to be successful but tragically Nida does not survive.

On August 20, 1993, conjoined two-month old sisters Amy and Angela Lakeburg of Indiana are medically separated in a Philadelphia surgery in which it is decided that the weaker Amy will be allowed to die so Angela be given a chance to survive. The two twins, who share just one heart and liver, grip the heart of the United States, but tragically Angela dies less than a year later as well. Later stories reveal the sad news that the Lakeburg’s father sold video rights to the twins separation surgery and used that money to purchase drugs.

The danger of infection among internal organs in conjoined twins is unfortunately shown in a set of twins in England as Chloe and Nicole Astbury succomb to an infection in 1996 despite doctor’s efforts to save the pair. The two girls were born joined together at the breastbone and shared a liver and bowel.

The Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital in Loma Linda, California performs its first successful separation, separating Shawna Leilani and Janelle Kiana Roderick on May 31, 1996, 30 days after the Prescott, Arizona family delivers the twins. The lead doctor in the surgery was Dr. Gibbs Andrews, who had been involved in two prior separations. The separated girls come through the operation with flying colors. The shows ‘Joined at Birth’ and ‘MSNBC Investigates: Conjoined Twins’ profile the Roderick family.

Weronika and Wiktoria Palen, joined at the chest and abdomen, were successfully separated by a 12-person surgical team at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 1999. Both girls are doing well and have returned to their home in Poland.

A rare type of conjoined twins are born in February, 1998 at the Loma Linda University Medical Center near Los Angeles, California with the birth of Gabrielle and Micheala Garcia, a pair of parapagus twins with just two legs between them. The girls are separated at eight months, which is extremely rare in cases of conjoined twins with just two legs.

Another never-before seen type of conjoined twins happens in Boston, Massachusetts in 1999 with the birth of the Soto Twins from Puerto Rico. The two girls share one heart with the healthier twin, Darielis, pumping blood through the umbiblical cord to her sister. It is decided to separate the babies immediately following their birth (if doctors had cut the umbiblical cord both babies would have died), and Darielis survives the Children’s Hospital of Boston surgery and is a healthy little girl living in New Jersey today. As expected, Darielis’ sister does not survive the surgery.

A pair of conjoined twin boys are born on Halloween, October 31, 1999 in Lima, Peru, Luis Angel and Luis Aberto Patiño-Quispe. The twins are cared for initially in Peru and then brought to Miami Children’s Hospital in the United States for successful separation surgery in September, 2000.

Esther Alphonce and her twin sister, Stella, are born in Tanzania in November, 1999. The girls are successfully separated a year later but remain in poor health. Esther sadly passes away on February 22, 2003 of pneumonia and anemia due to malnutrition and poor medical care.

The History of Conjoined Twins (2000)

There were a total of 26 births of conjoined twins around the world that we saw documented during 2000. Almost all of the cases listed on this page (22 of 26) were pairs of girls as well as one fetus in fetu birth of a boy twin. Most research indicates that conjoined twins are 70% female and 30% male, and that perhaps more than half of all conjoined twins are born stillborn with a little more than a third surviving past the first day. Cases below are shown in reverse chronological order:

A set of conjoined twin girls are born at the Pietermaritzburg Edendale Hospital in South Africa on December 22. The mother was from Ixopo, South Africa. They are expected to be surgically separated. Another set of conjoined twins was born at the same hospital 30 years earlier.

A pair of twin boys, Kiti and Piti, are born in Bangkok, Thailand on December 19. Each boy is born with a hole in his heart and they share just one liver and kidney. Kiti and Piti both died following an attempt to separate them.

An unnamed pair of twin boys are delivered stillborn in Abuja, Nigeria on December 6. The twins were apparently dicephalus conjoined twins.
