Twin pregnancy symptoms at 8 weeks

You might not believe it, but you’re at the two month mark already. So much has gone on, and though you’re probably not showing, you’re far enough along that the reality’s probably hit you.

At 8 weeks pregnant with twins, you’re also probably looking at your first prenatal appointment, so let’s dive right in and find out what’s going on this week (and see our twin pregnancy guide here)!

Your Twin Babies at 8 Weeks Pregnant

Right now, your babies are around two thirds of an inch long, or around the size of a kidney bean or raspberry. They’re going to grow a noticeable amount each day, too. Around a millimetre a time.

That might not sound like a lot, but when you’re only 15 millimetres tall, it’s massive.

Your babies are also heavy enough to have a real weight now. A staggering 0.04 ounces. Expect that to go up, fast.

They’ve got hands and feet, too, although their fingers and toes will still be connected by delicate little webs of skin, as well as real eyelids that can almost cover their eyes!

Inside, their lungs will connect up to their throat, ready for the first breath of air in all those months, and they’re going to be moving around a lot more now.

Although they’re way too small to even think about feeling it yet.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 8 Weeks

Eight weeks in and your hormones are running riot throughout your body, causing massive changes. We’re sorry to say it, but most of them aren’t good.

But they are necessary, for the wellbeing of you and your twins, so don’t feel bad. Here’s what you’re facing:

  • Sore breasts: Like we said last week, a lot of women have gone up by a cup size by now. That’s because your breasts are prepping for breastfeeding already, and all of the milk producing glands are expanding.
  • Morning sickness: If you suffer from morning sickness, all the pregnancy hormones are probably kicking your ass right now. If you’re struggling, then take it easy, and eat what you can. Try and focus on dry, relatively tasteless foods like toast and crackers. If you’re having trouble, our article has a bunch of helpful tips.
  • A stronger sense of smell: This can work right alongside the morning sickness. It’s another hormonal thing, and the boring science is that it’s an evolutionary defence, to stop you eating things that could hurt your baby.
  • Exhaustion: Your body is producing a lot more blood, to keep your uterus, and more importantly, your babies, supplied. This means that your blood sugar levels and blood pressure are going to be much lower than you’re used to, which contributes to that muddy, mixed up feeling you’ve got right now. The best advice is always the same. Get as much rest as you can, and try and eat right.
  • Cramps: Your uterus is expanding fast now, so all the ligaments in your abdomen are stretching to make space. If it gets excessive, or is particularly debilitating, let your doctor know.
  • Strange dreams: Bizarre dreams are a completely normal part of pregnancy. Albeit one that no woman ever seems to talk about. So if you find yourself waking up with bizarre thoughts on your mind, don’t worry. You aren’t the only one.
  • Spotting: You can still be spotting at eight weeks, especially after sex, because your cervix is more sensitive. Unless it gets particularly heavy or constant, it’s generally nothing to worry about, but if you’re concerned, always see your doctor.

8 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

At eight weeks, your babies have defined arms and legs, and they’re going to be moving around all the time. So if you’re going in for your first prenatal, don’t be surprised to see that!

Things to Do This Week for a Healthy Pregnancy

You’re probably either going for your first prenatal, or preparing for it. So here’s what to expect.

  • Your doctor will give you a full physical, including blood and urine tests.
  • Your blood test will be examined to see if you’re rhesus positive or negative, and compare that to your babies. (It can cause issues if you’re the opposite to your developing babies.)
  • You’ll be checked for red and white blood cell levels, to make sure your immune system is fine.
  • You’re also going to be checked for STDs, HIV and Hepatitis, because these are all transferable to your baby.

Expect to be barraged with questions by your doctor, but relax. You’re probably not doing anything wrong.

Now’s the time to ask your own questions right back, and if you’ve been following our articles, you’ve probably got a list of questions to ask. If you don’t, that’s fine too. Here’s a few ideas.

  • How much weight should you gain? Because this question is based on your current weight and your body type, your doctor will give you a ballpark figure to work around.
  • Can I keep exercising? If you’ve got an exercise routine, it can feel bad to give it up, especially early on, so ask your doctor if you need to make any changes.
  • Are all my meds fine to keep taking? There’s a lot of variation in medication, and if you’re currently on anything, make a list and ask your doctor.
  • Should I start taking prenatal vitamins? Ask your doctor what they recommend, and how and when is best to take it. Now is also a good time to ask if there’s any changes you should make to your diet.
  • Who do I call if I have questions or an emergency? Your doctor should have a 24 hour helpline or number. Issues happen at random times with pregnancies, so you’re going to appreciate being able to get hold of your healthcare professionals whenever you need to.

7 weeks pregnant with twins already. Crazy right? You can expect significant changes this week. So keep reading to find out what’s going to happen to you in the coming days…

Your Twin Babies at 7 Weeks Pregnant

Your babies are now twice as big as they were in week 6, which is fantastic. They’re about half an inch long, which, to put it in perspective, is about the size of a blueberry.

Your babies develop externally, with arms and legs lengthening and dividing into the actual hand, arm, and shoulder sections rather than little flappy paddles.

Your babies’ heads are also developing at a fantastic rate. Their mouth is developed now, with a tiny little tongue inside of it, and inside their head, they’re growing new brain cells at over 100 new cells a minute.

The babies are still technically embryos and have tiny vestigial tails, which will slowly shrink down over the next few weeks until a tailbone is left.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 7 Weeks

Seven weeks in, you can probably expect to start having pregnancy symptoms, even if you’ve been lucky enough to dodge them so far. Here’s what to expect:

  • Nausea: The hormones that cause morning sickness are flooding your body, which means if you’re going to suffer from morning sickness, it’s going to be strong right now, especially if you’re having twins!
  • Cravings: Food cravings are a normal part of pregnancy and, generally, your body’s way of getting the nutrients you might otherwise be lacking. If you want to minimize your cravings, try to eat as healthy and varied a diet as possible.

  • Food aversions: The flip side of the coin. Food aversions during pregnancy are also entirely normal and come at the weirdest times. Some women even have strong aversions to particular food smells, or even the sight of it can set them off. Either way, this is nothing to worry about unless it prevents you from eating. If you’re struggling, use neutral and relatively dry foods with minimal flavor and smell. Things like crackers, light cheese, and yogurt are excellent.
  • Acne: Your body is going through the worst hormonal changes since you were 13 and you thought dressing all in black was so cool, you guys, so you can expect a few breakouts here and there. If you’re suffering or need it gone, see your doctor and ask them to recommend a prescription because some over-the-counter treatments aren’t suitable when pregnant.
  • Mood swings: Not only are you hormonal, but all the changes and different things going on are going to make it doubly difficult to keep your head on straight.
  • More saliva: Yep. This happens. It’s associated with morning sickness and nausea, so don’t be too disgusted if you wake up with a sticky pillow.
  • Cramping: Your uterus is seeing some significant changes, so it’s normal to feel a lot of cramping and aching as your body adjusts.
  • Swollen boobs: We’ve mentioned this before, but you might feel the pull right now. Some women have grown a full cup size by seven weeks in, so if you’re spilling out of your bra, it might be time to get the comfy ones out of the back of the dresser. Some women also start noticing little spots around their areola (the darker bit around the nipple.) That’s normal, too; they’re sweat glands and up to lubricate your nipples.

7 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

At seven weeks, it’s usually relatively easy to see if you’re having twins. So if you’re having an ultrasound at seven weeks, keep an eye out for the second baby!

Things to do this week for a healthy pregnancy

  • Start preparing for your first prenatal. Grab a notebook or your phone and list any questions you have to take with you. Also, make a list of any meds you’re on, whether prescription or not, and if you can, write down the date of your last period so they can get an accurate figure.
  • You could also start taking pregnancy photos if you haven’t already. The changes you go through can seem incredible when you look back at your twin pregnancy, and the earlier you start, the better.

6 weeks pregnant with twins? A lot of women realise they’re pregnant at around the sixth week, so if you’ve only just found us, welcome!

Your Twin Babies at 6 Weeks Pregnant

Your babies are twice as big as they were last week, and by week 7 they’ll be twice as big again! Right now, the developing embryos are about a quarter of an inch long, or the size of a sweet pea.

This is the week where the head starts to develop, with dark spots where your babies beautiful eyes will form, and tiny little depressions where ears and nose are going to grow.

You might also see the start of tiny little arms and legs, which might even be wiggling and dancing around.

Internally, it’s even more amazing. Your baby has developed lungs, kidneys, a liver, and now their hearts will start beating!

Incredibly, right now your babies heartbeats will be around 110 to 120 beats per minute, or almost twice as much as a healthy adult!

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 6 Weeks

Six weeks in, and you’ve got one of two choices. The first is that you’ll be lucky enough to have absolutely no symptoms. In which case, you’re so lucky, and we’re so jealous!

On the other hand, you could have strong symptoms, in which case you can expect them to be the same as the last couple of weeks, but worse, as your body gets used to the continuing pregnancy.

  • Morning sickness: Morning sickness is a huge drain on a lot of women, especially women who are carrying twins. Contrary to the name, it doesn’t even have to happen in the morning, with some women suffering worse during the day, or even late at night! There’s a lot that can make morning sickness worse, so if you’re suffering, you should check out our article on it.
  • Exhaustion: If it’s not morning sickness, it’s tiredness. Your body is currently burning through calories making all the changes it needs to give your developing babies the best environment possible. This takes a huge amount of energy, so it’s only natural to feel tired. If you’re struggling, get as much rest as possible, and make sure you’re treating yourself right. More tips on that later.
  • Sore boobs: Even this early on, your body is sending more blood to your boobs to get them ready for breastfeeding. So sore and tender boobs is normal, and not something to worry about.
  • Needing to pee: With all the changes going on down there, and the massive amount of hCG pregnancy hormone flowing through your blood, needing to pee a lot more than often is completely normal. But if it starts to hurt, or you keep feeling like you need to pee but can’t, see your doctor. That could be signs of something else.
  • Bloating and constipation: You’ve got excess levels of progesterone in your body, which can cause all sorts of hilarious (not) digestive issues, like constipation, gas, and bloating. If you are suffering, drink more fluids and eat more fiber. If not for you, then for your poor partner.
  • Spotting: Almost a quarter of women suffer from spotting in their early pregnancy, so if you see a few spots when you take of your underwear at night, don’t worry, it’s normal. However, heavy bleeding or cramping and heavy pain is a bad sign, so if that occurs, make sure you see your doctor.

6 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

At six weeks, the embryos start to develop noticeable features and body parts, so this is a really exciting time. It might be hard to see, considering just how small they are, but look closely and you should be able to pick out the developing baby.

Things to do this week for a healthy pregnancy

  • Plan and book yourself in for your first prenatal check up. Most check ups are around the 8th week of pregnancy, so booking yourself in now is good for two reasons. Firstly, you’re guaranteed to get your place when you need it, and on top of that, it’s a weight off your mind knowing you’ve got everything you need in place. If you’ve never had a prenatal before, it’s going to be exciting. But take forever. You’ll have a complete physical exam including a smear test, pelvic exam, urine and blood tests. Your doctor will also barrage you with every question they can think of. But this is your chance to get any questions you have answered, so don’t be afraid to ask anything you have on your mind, your doctor has heard it all before.
  • All the hormonal changes are going to start causing emotional turmoil, and you can expect this to go on for a few weeks, at least. If you find yourself getting stressed, anxious or emotional, just let everyone around you know what’s going on.
  • Make sure you’re looking after yourself by getting light exercise, lots of rest and eating healthily.

Your twin babies at 5 weeks pregnant

You’re still early in your pregnancy, and your babies growth reflects that. Right now, they’re tiny—around 0.13 inches from the top of their heads to the bottom of their little bottoms.

In general terms, they’re about the size of an apple or sesame seed. Yes. That tiny. But in the coming weeks, they’re going to grow astonishingly. Expect that size to double by week 6!

Even though they’re just tiny embryos, your babies organs and nervous systems are starting to develop, including the heart and blood vessels. Pretty soon, they’re going to have their first heartbeat too!

Odds of Having Twins

Twin pregnancy symptoms at 5 weeks

You’re still incredibly early in your pregnancy. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t start having early symptoms. This is because the hormonal changes that look after your baby and ensure that your body is ready for pregnancy have already begun, and significant changes are happening, even if you can’t detect them yet!

By your fifth week, you might have experienced…

  • Morning sickness is the apparent symptom that so many women suffer from. The name is a misnomer. Just because it’s called morning sickness doesn’t mean you have to have it in the morning, and you might not even be sick. You could have general feelings of nausea all day. With twins, morning sickness can hit you a lot harder, but there are a lot of tips and strategies you can use to reduce the impact.
  • Tender breasts: This could be the symptom that tips you off to the face that you’re pregnant. If you have tender, painful, and even slightly larger swollen breasts, it can be a big sign of twins.

Does Breast Tenderness Come and Go in Early Pregnancy

  • Drowsiness and fatigue: Your body is using far more energy than it’s used to, making the necessary changes, so it’s normal to feel tired. Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do about this except eat healthily and get as much rest as possible.
  • Abdominal aching or cramps: Your uterus might already be expanding to make space for your swiftly growing babies, so an aching is normal. If it’s debilitating, stops you from doing what you need to do, or is incredibly painful, it might be worth booking to see your doctor.
  • Needing to pee more: Your kidneys are going to expand as you go through your pregnancy to help filter out all the extra fluid that you’re going to have in your system. Unfortunately, that means you’ll need to pee a lot more. Sorry about that.

5 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

While any fetus at 5 weeks is still tiny, ultrasounds can still find the gestational sacs in the uterus, meaning it’s possible to find out you have twins this early!

Things to do this week for a healthy pregnancy

  • Start eating healthy: The earlier you can do this, the better. And establishing a healthy eating pattern will give your body the nutrients it needs, minimizing unexpected cravings and nausea.
  • Start a pregnancy journal: A pregnancy journal is a massive help when looking after yourself and your babies. After all, I know how spotty my memory can be at times, and being able to go back and find out exactly how you felt on a particular day and how you’re changing, is enormous, especially if your doctor needs to know something.
  • Slow down on highly strenuous exercise: You’re pregnant. Anything particularly energetic always runs the risk of miscarriage. So please slow down and take it steady.

23 Reasons Having Twins is Incredible

2
Twin birth

Until you’ve lived with twins, you don’t know the sheer amount of glorious joy that comes with waking up in the morning (or the middle of the night) to see both smiling faces staring up at you.

Here’s our list of the greatest reasons that having twins is effing awesome!

#1 Go through pregnancy once, but get two children!

why have twins

A lot (a lot) of women struggle with pregnancy, and having to go through the whole ordeal once and getting two beautiful, bouncing babies out of the deal is a super bargain!

I mean, having twins is more difficult than just having one kid, but it’s not that much harder, and it’s so much more worth it.

#2 That your twins are best friends for ever

It’s almost a cliché now, but most of the time twins really are best friends. They legit have that special connection, which apparently starts when they’re in the womb together, and only gets stronger as they grow up and share everything.

So there’s one big worry every parent has that you can get off you chest. Your twins will always have a best friend, and a closer one than anyone else will ever have.

#3 It takes a lot of the pressure off, even though it’s actually harder

Source

Babies need loads of love and attention, but when you’ve got twins, they’re going to spend a lot of time with each other rather than needing you there with them.

This is both awesome, because it frees you up to look after them properly and get everything done, and it’s a little bit sad, because some of the laser love you’d normally get from your baby is going to be focused on the other twin.

But that’s okay. They love you just as much, and you certainly love them just as much.

#4 Everyone treats you like a celeb

Anyone who sees your twins is instantly gonna fall in love, even if you’re just out with them both in the double stroller.

When every person you see starts cooing over your little treasures, it only makes you feel all the more special, and makes the struggle of pregnancy all the more worth it.

#5 Realising just how much you love your partner

Source

I don’t know if you know this, but, raising a baby is difficult. And raising two? Well, it’s fair to say I’d rather not do it alone.

So when someone starts crying in the middle of the night, waking up their twin, and your partner rolls over and says ‘Don’t worry, I’ve got this one.’ You’ll find yourself falling in love with them all over again.

#6 Your Instagram and Facebook are going to look more amazing than ever

Source

I know. Social media isn’t everything, but sharing a picture of your twinnies and having everyone you know comment? Feels amazing.

And hey, justify it by saying they’ll love these photos when they’re older. Because they will. I mean, who wouldn’t?

#7 Everything happens twice!

Source

Every mom has a story about how their child said their first word or when they first started walking. You get to have two of them!

#8 It gets you out of everything!

Source

Kitchen’s a bomb site and you’re just sitting on your ass eating take out. Again?

Family event coming up, but you really can’t face your obnoxious second cousin.

Still can’t fit into those jeans, and considering throwing them out, even though they’re a year old now?

Doesn’t matter. Had twins. It’s all fair game.

#9 Themed costumes

Whether it’s Halloween, parties, or just for the hell of it, the opportunities are endless!

#10 You get to be an awesome parent, twice over

Source

It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that you’re doing the best you can for your kids, and it’s actually working.

And when you’ve got twins, you know it’s you. When they’re both killing it at school, getting gold stars and A’s all over the place, and you know it’s because you spent that extra Saturday sitting with them both studying. Feels amazing.

#11 You see it all

Source

You’ve all seen it. A brand new mom with that deer in the headlights, just got back from ‘Nam look, like she’s seen the true darkness that lurks in the hearts of men, and it’s six months old and just started crawling. ..

Well, as the mom of twins, you’re going to face legitimately everything a new mother could face. Twice over. But you’re strong. You’ll beat this. And you’ll come out the other side stronger. You hope…

#12 The cuteness overload

[youtube.com v=”_JmA2ClUvUY”]

Until you’ve lived it, having twins is an experience like no other. Watching them play with each other, especially if they start making up their own special twin language is so adorable, it’s almost untrue. I feel like I’m watching a Disney movie!

#13 The fun of choosing two names

Every parent agonizes over their child’s names, wanting to pick the perfect one that suits them completely, and that everyone’s going to think is just soo cute.

You’re lucky enough to do that twice, and you might even choose to give your twins a theme name.

#14 Knowing that no matter what, your twins have got each other

Source

Twins share a special bond. Everyone knows it. So when they’re going into school for the first time, or going on a plane when they’re young, or even just having tough times with friends, they’re going to be able to relax because they’re with each other.

#15 Automatic coordination.

Source

If you’ve got two children and you ask them to dress up the same, they’re going to look at you like you’re insane.

But twins? Twins will do it without a second thought. I suppose being alike really does come naturally to them?

#16 Joining the super secret twin mom club

We meet on Thursdays, bring muffins.

But seriously. Even though twins are getting more common, they’re still rare enough that having twins is a really unique and surprising thing. You’re still gonna feel special, especially if you’re the only mom in your group of friends with twins!

#17 Only having to plan one birthday for two children

At least when they’re younger, twins are going to love having a double birthday. And not only is that easier for you, and so much simpler when it comes to invites, cakes and all that sort of stuff.

It’s awesome because you get some of the most adorable photos in the whole world (see #6).

#18 Watching them learn together

We all get that rush of concerned pride when we see our children trying and struggling to grasp something new, and then when they conquer it, the euphoria is like nothing else.

Well, when you’ve got twins, watching them work together and learn to smash life’s problems as a pair is the greatest feeling!

#19 So much free entertainment.

[youtube.com v=”kDy100WK64M”]

There’s a reason babies are a staple of comedy clip shows. Because they’re just natural comedians, and we love em for it.

So when you’re living with a double act, you’re going to face double the trouble. Watching their faces when you ask them why there’s crayon on the wall

#20 Double the love

Can Identical Twins Look Different

That feeling, when you and your child are both pooped out, and they just want to hug you and fall asleep, is the best.

Well, as the proud mom of twins, you might get double the trouble, but you can also expect double the love a mom normally gets, too.

#21 It really helps with decorating

I mean, who didn’t want every photo in the house replaced with proud stick figure pictures?

Or maybe you were wondering what your living room would look like covered in baby food, but were too afraid to try it out.

Maybe you’re even brave enough to try the daringly unique ‘coloring in the walls with lipstick’ decorative technique. Sure to make family and friends instantly jealous.

Well with twins, these things and more are twice as likely! Count yourself lucky?!

#22 All bets are off

Source

When you’ve got twins, you’re going to be running around just trying to cope. You won’t have time to worry about the silly things like spending hours getting your hair done any more, but that doesn’t matter.

Because your life is now complete. You’ve got everything you need, right there in both arms. Who cares that you look like a scarecrow. Right? Right???

#23 It’s just a twin thing

Seriously. Until you’ve seen it, you won’t know. It really is just a twin thing.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our list. Although I think it’s pretty comprehensive, there’s sure to be something we’ve missed, so make sure you fill us in on what else is awesome about having twins in the comments!

Best Baby Walker

When your baby’s trying to take their first steps, it really helps to have something to give them a leg up. We’ve all seen little babies attempt to raise themselves up on furniture and walls, and those tentative first steps are so much easier when they’ve got adequate support. That’s why the best baby walker is a must.

But you knew that already. You’re a smart cookie, and that’s why you’re here. Read on to learn just what sort of baby walkers you can buy, and what to look for when you’re buying one.

What Types of Walker Are There?

There’s actually three types available today, the seated, walking and trailer types. But what are the differences, and which ones are best? Here’s the skinny.

Seated baby walkers are best for younger babies, because they’re going to be sitting in it with their feet hanging out of the bottom. This supports your baby when they can’t quite keep themselves upright, but still allows them to scoot around using their hanging feet, like a Flintstones car!

Walking frames are better for older babies, because they’re more like a zimmer frame, except for toddlers. Most babies are ready to use a walking frame from about six months old.

Trailers are the most traditional style, and they’re literally a trailer with a standing frame to hold on to. Trailers tend to lack the safety features and versatility more modern styles have, but they age better, because your baby can use them as a toy holder even when they don’t need it as support any more.

How to Use a Baby Walker Safely

  • Remember to baby proof the room. When your little one is whizzing around, anything at head height makes them incredibly vulnerable to knocks and bumps. Also bear in mind that your baby is going to have free reign with their hands, whether they’re in a seated walked or just letting go of their frame with one hand for a second, so anything that could cause harm if put in their mouths needs to be put away. That means cleaning products, perfumes and alcohol gotta go!
  • Never leave your baby unattended. Kids can move at around one meter per second in a baby walker, so lose attention for one minute and they could literally be out the door and halfway down the street!
  • Get a stair gate. Again, little ones can be lightning fast, so you need a way to restrict their movements. Otherwise you look the other way for just one second and they’re off on some wild adventure
  • Don’t overdo it. Walkers encourage children to walk, but they don’t actually encourage them to get up on their own, so make sure your child spends more time out of the walker than in it.

What Should You Look for?

There’s a few key things you should search for. Most of these are pretty obvious, but it’s so easy to overlook them, especially when you’re slightly frazzled from being a new mom!

Can It Be Adapted to Grow with Your Baby?

Did you know some baby walkers can actually be converted from sit down walkers to stroller types?

Even if it can’t, it’s definitely worth looking at the riding heights, because there’s nothing worse than buying one and having your baby outgrow it in a month! So check how many heights it can be adjusted to, and what age of baby it’s aimed at.

Does It Work as a Feeding Tray or Feeding Chair?

A lot of good baby walkers, especially sit down styles, come with a built in tray that’s usually adequate to be used as a feeding tray. Some might even recommend it for this use, with cup holders and other bits built in!

How Many Activities and Toys Does It Have?

You’re buying this to help with your baby’s development, and the toys and accessories are a huge part of that? The variance here is massive. Some only have a couple of basic toys on them, others have removable panels that function as really impressive toys just by themselves. So double check and see what you’re buying!

How Stable and Safe Is It?

All good baby walkers have to pass safety standards, and if yours doesn’t then seriously, don’t buy it! However, there’s a lot of other things that a walker can include which add to safety, like built in brakes and stability sections.

How Easy Is It to Clean?

We both know just how messy things can get with a toddler rolling around the place, and if they’re using a walker every day, especially to eat, then it’s definitely worth making sure that you can clean it quickly and easily. The best walkers are machine washable, and might even come apart so you can clean them even easier!

Baby Walker Reviews

Kolcraft Tiny Steps 2-in-1 Activity Walker

best baby push walkerKolcraft’s tiny steps walker is a really impressive little walker with everything your baby needs to take them from only being able to sit up on their own, all the way to toddling around unsupported!

For starters, this can be fully converted from a sit down type, to a stroller frame type really simply. So that means it grows with baby, all the way through their development. It’s also easily adjustable for different heights and weights, so no matter how big or small your baby is, they’re going to fit into this.

It’s comfy, with a soft padded seat that’s easy to clean, and the built in tray and cup holder means this can also do double duty come dinner time. The built in developmental toys are basic but well made and lovely, with a bead bar, spinning ball and textured flower.

It’s safe, too. The bumper bar around the edge is wide set, to protect your child’s feet, and the built in anti slip friction pads mean that no matter what surface you put this on, it’s not going to go anywhere it shouldn’t, even on hardwood flooring.

Finally, you can fold this away into a tiny storage shape, which slips into any cupboard or behind the couch, so when it’s not in use you don’t have to keep looking at it, stuck in the corner. All this, and it’s also really reasonably priced. If you don’t know what sort of baby walker to buy, and you need something that’s going to carry your baby all the way through their learning to walk years, this is a really nice choice.

Pros

  • Cute and stimulating for baby
  • Grows with baby, adjustable height and style
  • Easily folds flat for storage
  • Comes apart for easy cleaning

Cons

  • Hard to move from flat floors to carpets

VTech Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker

baby walker reviewsWhen you think about baby walkers, you probably think about this one. It’s ubiquitous, seen in every nursery and playground ever, and there’s a reason the design is so popular. Because it’s great!

It’s a frame style walker, which are obviously really simple designs, but that doesn’t mean it’s worse than other styles. It’s strong and sturdy, and has a really smart tension control dial so you can set how fast your little baby can move it.

When you’re looking at this walker, though, the real focus is the toys. There’s so much on this that it’s guaranteed to quickly become your baby’s favorite toy. Which is great, because you can easily remove the toy section too, so your baby can easily use it away from the walker, even when they no longer need it!

With the standard rollers, shape sorters and light up buttons, your baby gets everything they need to help develop key motor skills, and the 5 musical piano keys and over 70 songs and sound effects are a huge help when it comes to linguistic progress.

It’s also got two separate modes, learning and music, designed to help your baby with two different modes that have specific effects for your child. All this, and it only needs 2 AA batteries, which it actually comes with!

If you want great toys, as well as being a solid and stable walker for your baby, then you know which one to get. V-tech know what they’re doing. Let their expertise help your baby, like they’re helped so many others.

Pros

  • Versatile toy for both sitting and walking
  • Very engaging for the little one!

Cons

  • Not enclosed

Bright Starts Walk-A-Bout Walker

best baby walker toysA great budget choice with a really nice selection of toys, this baby walker is my favorite seated walker out of the list, and an excellent choice overall. Here’s why.

First, the toys. They’re really impressive, especially for a lower priced walker. Electronic, with lights, sounds and melodies, they’re sure to keep your child entertained, which is great because you can pull the toy section out of the walker and use it on its own too. Plus, even though it uses batteries, it only needs 3 AA’s, and doesn’t go through them too fast either.

The baby walker itself is surprisingly well built, with a really sturdy construction, deep seat and strong bumper frame. There’s a surprisingly smart safety brake feature in the wheels, too, which automatically puts a stop to movement when the walker goes over uneven ground. Theoretically, this means steps aren’t going to cause accidents. But we still don’t recommend you put it to the test!

It also grows with baby. The seat is large, with 3 adjustable heights. Plus, when you’re not using it, it folds down to a slimline flat form that you can throw under couches, cribs or into cupboards. Overall, for the money, this is a really solid little walker, and definitely worth considering!

Pros

  • Really nice toys, with light and sound
  • Toys are removable, for separate play
  • Sturdy and well built
  • Comfortable and roomy seat

Cons

  • Can be difficult to move on thicker carpets

Safety 1st Sounds ‘n Lights Discovery Walker

A simple sit down style baby walker with a great selection of toys, Safety 1st’s offering is a great budget choice that just needs a little more thought if you’re picking it up.

Actually putting it together can be a little annoying, but once you’ve got it assembled it’s a great little walker, with a really sturdy build, a wide bottom bumper and grip strips that keep it stable whilst letting it move even on thick pile carpets!

The toys are really good on this, too. There’s a great selection, and they’re built into two sliding trays that sit over another tray that’s perfect for dinner times. It’s easy to wash, too, considering you can just throw all the fabrics into the washer. Which is nice, because we all know how messy it can get when your little one gets into their food!

The only real issue? It’s got three adjustable height settings, but even on the lowest setting, it sits quite high. So smaller babies might be hanging from the floor a little when you first buy this, which obviously isn’t ideal. So if you’ve got a petite child, take another look at this and make sure they’re going to be able to use it before you buy.

Pros

  • 2 separate activity trays
  • 3 adjustable heights
  • Machine washable
  • Really easy to use on carpets

Cons

  • Quite tall, even on lowest setting
  • A pain to assemble

There’s an awful lot of options out there, but as long as you buy something that your baby can easily walk in, and that has enough stimulation to keep them interested, you’re sure to make the right choice. If you have an alternate best baby walker in mind, please let us know in the comments.

Ways to Sleep Better During Pregnancy

1
Ways to Sleep Better During Pregnancy

Are you looking for ways to sleep better during pregnancy? We all expect to lose sleep when we’ve got a newborn, but for first time expectant moms, it might be surprising how much sleep you lose because you’re pregnant. But the changes that run through your body when you’re pregnant with twins also affect how you’re sleeping, and the sheer range of different issues that you can face are mind boggling. Thankfully, we’re here to take the strain, so sit back and read this article to find out exactly how to sleep better when pregnant.

How Is Pregnancy Going to Affect My Sleep?

Women sleep worse than men anyway, and pregnancy definitely doesn’t help! There’s an awful lot that happens to you whilst you’re pregnant, and bear in mind that you might not face all, or even any of these symptoms. (If that happens to you, please don’t let us know, because we’d all be so damn jealous.)

Ways to Sleep Better During Pregnancy

As your belly gets bigger, it gets harder and harder to sleep comfortably. In fact, in your third trimester, sleeping on your back becomes all but impossible, so get used to sleeping on your side. This is because the increased weight puts pressure on your intestines and a bunch of major blood vessels.

Sleeping on your side can be hard, especially if you’re not used to it, and it gets even harder with a huge belly putting pressure on everything else. That’s why you should use pillows to support your growing belly, and the rest of your body. I would recommend purchasing a pregnancy pillow. Not only are they specifically designed to work around you and your needs, supporting you entire body without the need for any other pillows, but they’re adaptable as you go through every stage of pregnancy, as well as after, so it’s a long term investment.

facts about advanced maternal age and twins

If you can, it’s also best to sleep on your left side, because it increases blood flow, and therefore nutrients and oxygen, to your growing children. In terms of positions, the best way to sleep is with your legs and knees slightly bent, with a pillow between your legs, and if you’re regularly waking up with back pain, with a pillow under your back as well. A lot of women wake up with heartburn. If this is the case, the best thing to do is elevate your upper body slightly, and sleep a little bit propped up, in a semi sitting position. You might also find that you start snoring.

Snoring is a consequence of weight gain anyway, so it’s not unexpected to think that you might start. If you’re wondering, trust me, don’t ask your partner. They probably already know, and they might not be saying anything to save your feelings.

Pregnancy Sleeping Tips

Get a bedtime routine, and stick to out. Our routines are a major contributor to what we do, especially when you’re frazzled and out of sync. Choose something that relaxes you, like sitting with a good book or having a nice warm bath, and do it at the same time every night to relax yourself and get your mind in the frame to sleep. Experiment with positions and support. Try moving pillows around, or sleeping slightly sat up with your whole back and head supported. Sleep with a pillow between your knees. It’s an old wives tale, but it really does work. It puts your spine, hips and legs back into alignment, which takes pressure off of the sciatic nerve, a huge contributor to back pain.

To stop a whirring mind, make sure that you make a to do list. Even if you’re the most hyper organised person in the world, the hormonal changes running through your body will make you more anxious and controlling. Writing everything down lets you brain know with absolute certainty that you’ve sorted everything that needs to be done. Stay hydrated, but try not to drink too much in the two or three hours before bed to keep your bladder as empty as possible.

what you need to know about being 7 Months Pregnant With Twins

If you do have to pee, then don’t turn any lights on, or get a night light to lead you to your bathroom. Normal lights, or worse, your phone’s torch, are blue shifted light, which is fancy science talk for the sort of light that will pretty much instantly wake you up again. If you’re really struggling during the day, it’s okay to have a nap.

A 30 minute nap will do far more to refresh you rather than forcing yourself to struggle on. Don’t feel bad, because it’s not just you. More than half of women take weekday naps, with the number rising to almost two thirds of women on the weekend. Just make sure you don’t nap too late. Napping late might stop you from getting to bed. At the end of the day, as long as you’re getting enough rest, however you’re getting it, then it doesn’t matter about anything else.

If you’re worried, as we always say, the best thing you can do is talk to your doctor. Whatever is happening to you, they can give you specific, targeted advice. But in the meantime, follow our tips and you’ll probably find yourself sleeping much better either way.   Are you having trouble finding the best ways to sleep better during pregnancy? Or maybe you found the one foolproof way for getting to sleep whilst you were pregnant. (If so, please, tell us!) What to Pack in a Hospital Bag for Twins

1
Hospital Bag for Twins

When you’re packing your hospital bag for twins, there’s one huge thing to remember.

So make sure you’re up and ready early, too. We recommend having a bag packed at the start of your third trimester, around 26 weeks in.

Even though 37 weeks is around full term for most twins, depending on how developed and big your twins are, the type of twins, as well as any other complications that can come from having twins. There’s so much that could cause them to come early, so it’s great to be prepared.

You should also bear in mind that you’re much more likely to have a caesarian birth than a singleton pregnancy, so pack longer term, just in case.

Even if you or your doctors have spoken about natural, vaginal births, situations can arise that require a caesarian, so it’s good to be prepared.

Twin Hospital Bag Checklist

  • First off, your birth plan and maternity notes. I mean, it’s obvious, but so easy to overlook.

Clothing

  • Loose, comfortable clothes that are free, non-restricting, light and easy to move around in. Bring several changes of clothes. Three or four is great.
  • A specific outfit for labor is great. Bring something oversized and old, that you don’t mind getting ruined. Maybe ask your partner if you can borrow an old t shirt.
  • Two or three bras, as well. Bring your largest. Your breasts are going to be larger than usual. If you plan on breastfeeding, bring nursing bras too.
  • Several pairs of undies. Pack twice as many as you think you need. They don’t take up much room and it’s great to have too many, rather than not enough. Bring oversized and old underwear, if possible. Don’t buy disposables. They tend to be really low quality.
  • Your dressing gown, and slippers whether you normally wear them or not. Things don’t always go to plan, and whether you just want to grab a coffee, or get sick of lying there and want to wander, you’ll appreciate having something to go out in.
  • Socks can be appreciated. Your feet can get really cold in labor, so having something to throw on your feet and keep you toasty can go a long way to keeping you that little bit more comfy.
  • A separate outfit to come home in. Make sure it’s loose, comfy, and has layers, just in case it’s cool out when you’re coming home.
  • Loose fitting or front opening nightgowns or bedwear, if you’re going to breastfeed.
  • You might also consider a breastfeeding pillow, if you’ve already got one and you’re planning on breastfeeding at the hospital.

Toiletries

  • A washbag with all your toiletries, including toothbrush, hairbrush, flannel, soap, baby wipes, everything.
  • Super absorbent sanitary pads. Bring lots. Like, 25 or 30 lots.
  • Towels. A couple at least.
  • If you’ve got long hair, a hair clip or hair tie will be huge. You won’t miss it unless you don’t bring it!
  • Sponges or a water spray, to help you keep cool.

Twin birth

Comfort

  • Something to help you pass the time that’s not your phone. Books or magazines are great.
  • Your phone, and a charger. You’re probably going to be getting messages from everyone you know, and you might be in the hospital a while, so the charger is essential.
  • Snacks and drinks are always good. Your hospital will have facilities for this, but it’s great to have something already there, rather than having to wait. Plus, we all know how expensive and dreary hospital food is.
  • Lip balm. Air conditioning and pregnancy itself can dry out your lips, so lip balm can be great to bring.
  • Ear plugs, and maybe an eye mask. It can be hard to get to sleep in hospitals, and every little thing helps.

For the Twins

  • 10 to 15 sleepsuits and vests per twin. Newborns go through so many clothes, and you have twins!
  • Nappies. Like, a lot of nappies. If you don’t know how small your babies are going to be, then pack two sizes.
  • A shawl or blanket for each your babies, to wrap them in when you’re coming home.
  • Clothes for both twins to leave the hospital in, including hats.
  • Make sure you pack your car seats. Sometimes you won’t even be able to leave the hospital if you don’t have them.

Remember twins are usually smaller than normal, so when you’re choosing clothes, it might be worth having a set of tiny baby sized clothes, as well as newborns.

Again, ask your doctor or midwife what they recommend, based on the expected weight of your twins.

Make sure you know how you’re getting home. Have transport planned. It sounds stupid, but if you’re driving, whether it’s partner or family, make sure the car has a full tank of gas.

There’s nothing worse than just wanting to get home and having to stop over by a gas station with two newborns in the car.

Different mothers have different needs, but with this hospital bag checklist for twins you should have everything you need for as smooth a pregnancy as possible.

But if you’ve got any tips for us or there’s anything you think we’ve missed in a hospital bag for twins, be sure to let us know in our comments section!

Why Do I Have an Increased Appetite During Pregnancy?

0
twin pregnancy cravings

We’ve heard all the stories of an increased appetite during pregnancy. Moms to be who wake up in the middle of the night with intense and crazy cravings, like dipping pickles into ranch dressing.

Or moms who just eat and eat and eat, until they’ve blown up like a balloon, but can’t stop themselves and stay hungry!

But what causes it, and what is it going to do to you and your body?

So Why Does Appetite Increase During Pregnancy?

The answer is surprisingly simple. Your baby is growing, and needs more food and nutrients to fuel their increased development.

Woman eating pizza

How Much More Can I Expect to Eat?

It’s not as much as you might expect. In the second trimester, you’re probably going to need around 350 extra calories in the second trimester, which is absolutely tiny, and around 500 or 600 more in the third trimester, which is far less than you might think.

Of course, moms with twins need more, around 300 in the first trimester, 600 in the second, and 900 in the last.

When Does Your Appetite Increase During Pregnancy?

Normally around the start of the second trimester. At around week 17, your baby is developing quickly and like we just explained, needs increased amounts of food to grow up healthy.

That’s why it’s incredibly important to listen to your body, and not try and deny yourself anything. Make sure you eat, and as much as possible try to stick to a healthy, balanced diet full of proteins and healthy fats.

How to Manage Your Increased Appetite During Pregnancy

As always, follow standard healthy routines and guidelines. Just because you’re eating more and your body needs more calories doesn’t give you an excuse to crack out the pizza and donuts!

why does appetite increase during pregnancy

  • Choose healthy, nutritious options when possible. Fast food and chocolate is high calorie, but also burns out fast and has no real nutritional value. Choose calorically dense, high value foods like meats, cheeses, fresh fruits and greens.
  • Make sure you’re stocked up with what you need. If you’re hungry, you’ll eat it, so when you wake up in the middle of the night, if there’s nothing good in the house every single pack of chips will be gone by morning.
  • Stay away from the bad stuff. In the same vein, if there’s crappy food in the fridge, it’s all the more temptation for you to eat it. The best way to not eat bad food is to not have the option to eat it. So don’t buy any of it! (That’s a surprisingly good tip for life, as well.)
  • Take some snacks out with you. If you’re out and you don’t have any decent stuff with you when hunger strikes, you’re going to buy something awfully indulgent. We recommend nuts, druid fruit or a granola bar.
  • Let yourself go every so often. No one likes being restricted in their diet, and the best thing you can do is let off steam every now and then. So every couple of weeks give yourself a day where you can eat everything you want to. It’ll make you feel so much better!
  • Keep yourself hydrated. Dehydration is easily confused with hunger, and it’s also a contributor to premature birth. When you go to the bathroom, check your pee. If it’s too dark or cloudy, you know you need to drink more.

The best thing to do, though, is make sure that you’re trying to eat normally. Eat a balanced diet, stay healthy and listen to what your body is telling you.

As always, if you feel like you need specific advice, talk to your doctor, because like we always say, every pregnancy is different, and your needs are always going to be your own.

Whatever it is you need, your doctor can draw you up a specific plan and use your bloodwork to tell you exactly what you’re lacking, and what you should focus on eating.

At the end of the day, as long as you say healthy and try and stick to the right choices, you’re probably going to go through your pregnancy with no issues and end up with healthy, happy babies.

You’ve already done the right thing by coming here. We’ve got articles on everything you’re going to face, so stick around and check out some more of our articles!

What was your pregnancy like? Did you have any weird cravings, or did you just eat everything in sight? Did you enjoy your increased appetite during pregnancy?

Loss of Appetite During Pregnancy: Causes and What To Do

0
Loss of Appetite During Pregnancy

Pregnancy affects every woman differently, and for some women, it can completely take away their appetites. Maybe this is you, and you’re starting to worry about your loss of appetite during pregnancy?

After all, surely you should be eating everything in sight, with major cravings, stuffing down calories left-right, and center?

Well, the first thing to remember is that every pregnancy is different. That’s something we say an awful lot, but that’s because it’s so so true.

The second thing you need to consider is that you’re not on your own. This happens a surprising amount, and so many women end with no appetite during pregnancy, especially early on.

Strangely enough, an awful lot of them end up asking the same questions, too, so we’re going to attempt to answer as many as possible here.

Loss of Appetite During Pregnancy Explained

Shouldn’t I Be Eating More Calories During My Pregnancy?

Yes, of course. Anywhere from 300 to 900 more, depending on how far into your pregnancy you are.

But remember, your body knows what it needs, so try and listen to it. Eat steadily, and as often as possible, and talk to your doctor.

Ways to Sleep Better During Pregnancy

What Are Some Tips for Trying to Eat More When You Have No Appetite?

Eat little and often. Snack every couple of hours, with small, healthy meals. Fruits and nuts are excellent choices for this, and so are healthy cereal bars.

If you’re struggling to keep anything down, or just can’t face food, try and eat relatively dry, tasteless, and scentless foods. Eat whatever you can stomach. If you’re struggling with food, any calories are better than no calories.

It can also be easier for some women to drink meal replacement shakes or protein shakes for healthy calories, rather than having to force down food.

What Causes a Poor Appetite During Pregnancy?

Your body is making important adjustments to accommodate the developing fetuses. That’s why appetite loss is completely normal, and nothing to worry about as long as it doesn’t last too long.

It’s more likely to happen near the end of the first trimester and into the second trimester, as the digestive system becomes sluggish and nausea becomes far more prevalent.

Will Eating Like This Affect My Babies?

It shouldn’t, as long as it doesn’t last too long and your developing twins are still having their nutritional requirements met.

However, if it goes on long enough or you’re not meeting the nutritional requirements of your developing babies, it could cause issues. As always, and like we keep saying, it’s best to speak to your doctor.

What’s the Best Thing to Do?

Keep eating, little and often. Use the tips up above to help you eat even if you don’t want to and can’t face it.

twin pregnancy cravings

It’s also good to supplement with a pregnancy-specific multivitamin. We’d recommend doing this anyway, but if you aren’t then grab one and start taking it regularly for the extra boost in vitamins and nutrients.

Remember, it’s no longer just about you. Even if you can’t face food, you aren’t just eating for yourself.

A lack of appetite during pregnancy is no excuse not to be eating because you’re eating for your children, so make sure you get something down, no matter what it is.

The best thing you can always do is discuss it with a medical professional. If your loss of appetite goes on for more than a couple of days, make sure you talk to your doctor and get yourself checked out.

As long as you keep eating, you’re going to be able to give your babies what they need. Just make sure you’re living as healthily as possible and making the right choices, and you should be fine.

Did you experience a loss of appetite during pregnancy? When did it happen, and how did you cope with it? We’d love to hear your story, so let us know in the comments!
