Creating Sleep Rituals and Busting Through the Bedtime Blues

0

Remember when sleep came naturally, and you were able to snooze for hours on end? Somedays, life before twins may feel like a movie that you watched a long time ago. Whether you are in the twin pregnancy stage, infancy, or the toddler times; I promise you that sleep does come back.

The Pillow Phase

Around my second trimester, one pregnancy pillow was not enough. In our queen size bed, I had two pillows surrounding me. My poor husband had about one-third of the bed, while I sprawled out on the other portion.

I was unable to sleep on my back because I snored so loud that I woke the cats. Or, so I was told. I tried to sleep on my right side, but our one daughter did not like me laying that way. She was not afraid to tell me with hard, repetitive, kicks near the rib cage. The only side that was okay for the two of them, was my left side. Unfortunately, the left side was uncomfortable for me. Eventually, I came to a compromise and was able to prop myself up, while being turned towards the left.

Overall, the pregnancy pillows were a lifesaver. I was able to have relief and stay content, for quite some time. After delivering the girls, the pillows were still my go-to for comfort. That was until my husband fell asleep with one, and I had to share from that point on.

The Baby Bundles

We had the baby monitors, baby-proofed just about everything but our cats, and had a good estimate of what the schedules would be like. After the girls were born, all of those were important factors in our sleep routines. If we stayed consistent, we felt that it would pay-off.

The baby monitors offered peace of mind, reassuring us that our girls were okay. The baby proofing played an important role when our girls started to crawl and walk. The schedule gave us the biggest reward. Both girls woke up, ate their meals, napped, bathed, and went to sleep at the same time.

Another helpful item was the sound sleeper. Seven years later, and the girls still use it. Keeping it low, but offering a white noise, allowed us to finish things around the house without disturbing their sleep.

The Toddler Times

Forget late night feedings, as the toddler years provided plenty of late night and early morning workouts. As soon as they found out that they were mobile; our girls would climb, open, and bang on everything that they could. Child safety gates, along with the previously mentioned baby proofing, provided us with some sanity while keeping the girls safe.

When putting the girls to bed, we stuck to the schedule and the nighttime routines. Bath time was first, then we would read a book, tuck the girls in, and close the door. If they woke up during the night, the gate protected them from running amuck around the house. It, also, gave us plenty of time to react by getting them back into bed. We would immediately walk out of their room and say, “goodnight”.

My husband and I remained consistent. The girls quickly learned that they could throw a fit, scream, or stare at the baby camera for the monitor; but those behaviors would not bring us back in to accommodate their desires. If one would do this, the other typically woke up to see what the fuss was about. The other would either join in on the nonsense, or they both would chatter for a few. Regardless, it would exhaust them both, and they would fall asleep soon after.

I can reassure you that you can tell the difference between cries. If someone wanted their own way, versus a cry for help or if they were not feeling good. In these instances, we would, of course, respond to and make sure they were okay.

Rest and Relaxation

Keep in mind that whatever bedtime rituals that you create, make sure they are ones that you will want to stick with. If you enjoy rocking your babies to sleep, while snuggling with them in the chair; be sure that you will want to do that every night over quite a few years. If you begin a habit, then that one time you do not do it, everyone has a good chance that they will be in for a rough night.

Try your best to sure that everyone is getting plenty of rest. You and your support team need the energy to keep up with the twins. While the twins need rest to help with their growth. Sticking to a routine, that works for you and your family, is the most important thing to do. It is a crucial part of your self-care.

Expecting Twins? Advice from a Twins Mom

0
expecting twin - advice from a mom of twins

As a twin mom, I know that the first year is full of love, but it also comes with a lot of challenges.

Multiples do not come with an instruction book, although I wish mine did.

New parents have their hands full with one baby and as a twin parent, our first year is double the work. I wanted to share a couple of tips and suggestions that really helped me during my first year.

Having Twins: Top Advice from a Twins Mom

1. Parenting is not an exact science, I found that the best parenting advice did not always work for my twins (especially when it came to sleeping through the night).

I always looked to others to solve my parenting struggles and I became disappointed when the solutions didn’t work for me.

I learned that there is no quick fix. Do not feel guilty. You will be able to figure it out eventually on your own. The best thing to do is listen to all the advice and remember it because it does help you find your own way.

2. “You can do it” – I learned this lesson from my grandfather.

Growing up, whenever I was worried about school auditions, tests, tryouts, later in life it was interviews, wedding planning, moving, etc….I would sit down and talk to my grandfather and all my conversations started “I want to do _____, BUT…” and I would start to self-doubt.

I think others might do that as well and he always stopped me and said: “You can do it”. He never let me continue. This at the time drove me crazy but taught me such a valuable lesson. My father followed this too; however, he always had to hear me out and walk me through all my worries.

I learned through this that I can do it and so can you! Please try not to doubt yourself. It isn’t that you can always be the best, but you can always do it and try your best. I didn’t get every interview, audition (I rarely did); but I “Did It” every time by attempting and giving it my best. So please remember “You Can Do It”! Life is not about being perfect. It is about being perfectly yourself.

3. Organization is important.

I was never that organized before twins, but after they were born, I found that keeping things organized really helped make my day easier and less stressful. Twins have so many things (clothes, furniture, equipment, and toys). Walking through my house is usually like an obstacle course most days.

I found that having a place for everything made cleaning up so much easier. I always leave out my twin’s favorite toys and keep them easily assessable. Other toys that are less played with are gathered up and put into 6 different tubberware containers. We call them surprise boxes at my house. I keep them in a closet and each day I will bring out a new surprise box. It will contain toys, puzzles, and activities.

twin clothing

My boys find the items in the surprise box so much fun (even though they were filled with toys they barely played with when they were easily assessable). Putting them away made them new again when they were brought out. It turned into a very fun tradition for us and my boys love getting a surprise box. It also gives me a little free time every day which is a wonderful thing.

4. Other parents, friends, and even strangers will rush to give you advice and recommendations. Do not let what they say bother you.

So many people told me how many places they visited or what they did the first year they were parents and being a new mom to twins those adventures were not possible. Over time I learned that I would be able to do all those items and more! You know what will work best for you and your two. Outings are not easy with twins during the first year, but it will get easier.

5. If something wonderful, fun, silly, or unexpected happens write it down. You will be so happy that you did.

Over time the details of some events will be forgotten and you will love to reread your memories. I write down my favorite memory every month in a notebook and I look forward to reading it to my boys at the end of the year. I love reliving those moments and memories.

Please remember that the days are long, but the years are very short. Enjoy and celebrate each milestone. Watching twins grow and seeing their close bond is incredible.

Scheduling with Twins: Allow for Time to Be on Your Side

0

One of the best pieces of advice given was to keep our twins on the same schedule. Whether it be for feedings, sleep, bathing, and every other daily routine. What we did not know was that seemed to begin when I was pregnant with twins. This is my journey through pregnancy, infant stages, toddler times, and into the elementary years.

Pregnancy Stage: The Prelude

I always felt the need to read to my babies before they were born. I started at the 13-week mark. In the beginning, I wanted to read novels and Shakespeare, thinking that it was such an ingenious idea! Later realizing that my hormones would take over, and I would hardly get through the first page of a board book without falling asleep. Regardless of how tired I was, I still read what I could.

Around the second trimester, I would wake up hungry around 4 a.m. I would snack on either applesauce, pudding, or yogurt. It was just enough to get me through until I ate again.

pregnant with twins

They’re Here: Showtime

Once we came home, scheduling worked its way out naturally! For meals; my husband and I would prepare the bottles and our food, feed the girls, then we would eat. Leaving clean-up to follow, once the four of us were finished.

Tummy time, naps, and bath times were spread out between feedings and diaper changes. After dinnertime, and the girls’ nighttime bath, I would read to them. This would lull them sleep.

My 4 a.m. cravings turned into 4 a.m. feedings. Afterward, they would both pass out for a couple of more hours. I was already conditioned to be awake during this time and, apparently, they were too!

Toddler Time: Intermission

Meals stayed the same. Especially when my husband and I would turn a specific television show on; our girls would waddle on over towards the kitchen, looking for something to eat. The theme song became our convened dinner bell.

Tummy time turned into play time, and even play dates with friends. Naps were not as sporadic and became longer after they would eat lunch. Bath times stayed the same, as did reading before bed. Occasionally, one of them would wake up, wanting a quick snack around 4 a.m. That did not last long, as they grew into the threes.

Some things that would start on the same schedule was the climbing sessions, potty training, and temper tantrums. If one had an idea about something, the other would follow suit shortly behind her.

They found it hilarious to climb out of their beds. Going through their drawers, and “redesigning” their room became like ninjas. I used naptimes as the time for me to clean up around the house or attempting to take a peaceful shower. I would have the monitor on but quickly learned to cut my free time shorter. It became a balancing act. As soon as I felt that I had a few additional moments to catch up on things, a new milestone would come around the corner.

During potty training time, if you take your toddlers out with you, prepare to learn the quickest route to the nearest restroom. Always have a spare change of clothing with you. Just in case one, or both, do not make it in time. Once one saw her sister using the potty, the other became eager to use it, too.

Cute Twin Outfits for Babies

Thankfully, our girls did not have severe temper tantrums. Fits were thrown when we would be out in public. I received the random look of disgust, but not as much as I thought I would. The funniest was when I grocery shopped. The girls would sit sweetly in the cart made for two. I would go down one aisle and hear a compliment from another shopper. As if on cue, the two of them would be bicker. Minutes later, they would be loving each other.

Bath times and nighttime reading gave them familiarity of needing to relax and unwind. They would try to get each other riled up. When either my husband or I would sit down to read with them, they had their blankets in hand, and their eyes became heavy.

Elementary Years: The Show Must Go On

Our daughters are now seven years old and in the second grade. Their meal schedule has stayed the same. They have a light snack, on occasion, between lunch and dinner.

Baths have become showers. As they patiently wait for the other, they will read their books for school. After, they finish reading and/or complete their homework.

The petty arguments continue. The battles can be over who had which Barbie. Why the other one is not wanting to play. Or, disagreeing on what to wear.

No two experiences will be the same. Create a schedule that works for you and your family. You’ve got this!

Feeding Twins: Conquering Dual Feedings

0
bottle feeding twins

From newborns, until they are independently eating; feeding twins can be daunting. The good news is that you can get creative with the feedings, and still walk away from the table with most of your sanity. Here is how I tackled bottle feeding and transitioned into table time.

Bottle Feeding Twins

Our daughters were born in June. My husband and I were able to have family stay with us and help when they could. Some lived nearby, and others flew in from out of state, to help us during the summer months. Feedings were on rotations, where two us would sit with each of the girls, taking turns on who would feed whom.

When autumn arrived, it was now up to my husband and me. At that time, Dexter worked a graveyard shift, and we had opposing schedules. He would take on the early morning feedings, as it gave him time to be with the girls and allowed me to rest.

twins drinking milk from bottles

We remained true and consistent with keeping them on the same schedule. Until they could hold their heads up, I would feed Charlotte first, since she was the quickest to eat. Get her settled, and then feed our slow-poke Shelby. Total time was about one hour to ninety minutes, from the prepping of the bottles to the time that Shelby was finished.

I tried to bottle feed them by using a nursing pillow to prop them up, but I was not confident in being able to hold them steady. I just stayed on a one-to-one basis until the glorious time when they could finally sit up unassisted.

I placed their car seats onto our dining room table. Propped the seats at an angle, that was similar to how we would hold them for their feedings, making sure to adjust if needed. With both lightly strapped in, I was able to bottle feed them at the same time.

Typically, Charlotte was still the front-runner when it came to her finishing her bottle first. Shelby preferred to move at the speed of a sloth, which gave me enough time to have her take a break. I would remove Charlotte from the seat to burp her, get her situated, and care for Shelby. There were times when they would switch, spit-up, or be fussy.

In those situations, alterations were made to accommodate the task at hand. Whether it be that one needed to be held, and the other was still content with me feeding her the bottle in her seat. This would go on until they could sit in their high-chairs and hold their bottles themselves.

Please note, if you opt for the car seats onto your dining room table; make sure to place something between the seats and the table, as our table still has the scratches from those fine moments in time.

Feeding Twins: Table Time

Once the fine-motor skills kicked in, we were all on a roll! During this time, patience is key. They are still learning how to hold a spoon and need your guidance. I allowed snack time to become a bit more freeing with some restrictions. For example: if they had yogurt in their hair because the spoon missed their mouth, it was no big deal.

We would make faces at each other, sing songs way out of tune, and there was always a mess. On some occasions, I had to reassure myself that they will not eat like this forever.

While attempting to learn how they should feed themselves, I would reiterate table manners and teach them “how-to”. The picture is of my girls, during snack time, and was taken at 19 months. For this specific incident, I ate my yogurt with them. Having both within arm’s reach, and a towel on standby, I would show them how to properly eat.

As you can see, they would end up needing a bath right after. Going into feedings, knowing that they will most likely need a mid-day washing, allowed me to remain calmer and relaxed than if they were already cleaned up.

Most Stylish High Chairs

When we went out to eat, or when we ate our main meals; the girls learned with time on how to have proper table manners. They watched us like hawks, mimicking our every move. We were much quicker to show them when, and how, to use a napkin versus throwing it on the ground.

Do What Works Best for You and Your Family

You will have many people giving you advice on how to do this and that. You need to remember that you need to do what works best for you and your kiddos. As I learned along the way about feeding twins, some things work, and others do not. Take in the suggestions and modify if need be. Be patient and remember to keep track of these precious milestones.

Things to Consider When Buying a Diaper Pail

Diaper pails are basically a kind of trash can that is specifically made for disposing of diapers. These have special features such as odor lock to guarantee any smell coming from dirty diapers. This saves you the time and effort of individually wrapping each soiled diapers.

Plus, it can stay in your nursery which helps you easily throw poop-filled diapers without trying to run from the changing table to your kitchen.

But do you really need a diaper pail or not? Some parents recommend having one while others aren’t really keen on buying it. Plus, it becomes more of a necessity when you have twins since the amount of soiled diapers you have per day is doubled. Having a separate bin for those is the best choice.

It’s also better to acquire a diaper pail when your twins are at least 4 months to 6 months old or when they are eating solid foods. Their poop is often smellier during this time and you’ll need to separate it with your other wastes.

Nonetheless, this article is perfect for those who are looking for a certain diaper pail for a fresher household.

However, choosing a diaper pail for twins can be a little intimidating. Each diaper pail pretty much looks the same with another, so what are the factors you should consider when finding a diaper pail? Does the diaper you use a valid factor or you can just choose any product you like?

To help you, here are some of the things you need to consider when it comes to choosing the right diaper pail.

Type of Diaper

One of the main factors you should consider is the type of diaper you use. There are basically two types of diapers – cloth diapers and plastic ones.

For cloth diapers, a “dry” diaper pail for twins might work best. These are lined diaper pails where cloth diapers are placed before they are washed. There are also some “wet” diaper pails before wherein cloth diapers were soaked before they are washed. However, these are not as used today as they were in the past.

Plastic diaper pails are used for plastic diapers. However, these are rigged with a certain type of liner or device that helps dispel the odour from these soiled diapers. Some other plastic diaper pails can be used with a normal garbage bag while others require a special storage for trash.

Secure Lid

Lids are often made to keep the odour from the wastes from spreading out on your home. However, some lids can be easily opened. This is a good thing if you’re an adult as it makes throwing a lot easier — as it should be.

However, these types of lids can be unsafe for your kids, especially when they become toddlers and get curious about everything around them. Plastic liners and bags can be a choking hazard; soaking pails have water and can be a drowning hazard. Toddlers might also climb into or fall in the bin where they’ll be unable to go out.

Choose something that you can open easily but will be harder for your children.

Capacity

Since you have twins, the numbers of diapers will be doubled. You need to find a diaper pail for twins that can hold the number of soiled diapers, even for the rest of the day (as it’s always better to empty them daily for hygiene and odour purposes). Remember, manufacturers will likely tell you that they can hold a certain amount or weight of diapers. Nonetheless, expect that this is actually lesser in reality.

Also note that as the diaper size becomes bigger, it’s more likely that the diaper pail will hold less.

Odor Control

Odor control is another of the most important factors to consider. It’s basically the reason why you need a diaper pail, or else you can just buy any other trash bin and specifically use it for disposing of diapers.

Odour control mechanisms can differ from pail to pail. Some have advanced technologies that keep the odour from coming out. Others require a special filler or another product to lock the odour within the pail.

Easy Open

You won’t always have both your hands available when you have twins. In fact, throwing their diapers with one hand may not be enough to keep them from toppling over their changing tables. You can’t really be too sure, especially when they are starting to push up their knees and hands or getting more active by the minute.

This is why an easy open diaper pail for twins is a better choice. You can find products with motion sensors which will open up immediately once your hand hovers above it. But these are often more expensive.

If you don’t have that much budget, purchase a diaper pail that has one foot pedal which opens when you step on the pedal and closes when you let go.

Price

Of course, the price should be considered, especially when you’re on a budget. Apart from the price of the pail, you might also want to check how much refills are. You should add that to the overall cost of buying and maintaining the diaper pail.

The most important is you buy a product that is a real value for money and you know can stay for a long time.

  • Pre-assembled upon purchase
  • Includes full-sized refill
  • Can fit up to 270 diapers
  • Odour lock technology that has a built-in carbon filter
  • Features 1 foot pedal
  • Air-tight clamp

For its price, it already includes one full-sized refill, so you need to take into consideration that this requires refilling every now and then. It also has an air-tight clamp that securely locks the refill when the pail is closed. This keeps odour from coming out.

Speaking of odour, it has an odour-lock technology with a naturally activated and safe carbon filter. It absorbs and then locks any strong smell coming from the diapers. Partner that with the airtight clamp and you can guarantee that the smell won’t bother you even in a smaller nursery.

Ubbi Money Saving, No Special Bag Required, Steel Odour Locking Diaper Pail

“No need for refills”

  • Doesn’t require refills, special bags, or inserts
  • Odour locking technology
  • Made from steel
  • Ready-to-use straight out of the box
  • Child-proof lock

This Ubbi diaper pail is indeed a money saver. Since it doesn’t require any special refills, inserts, or bags, you can save a lot more as you only need to pay for its price. It’s also made of steel, which helps lock the odour and requires less maintenance. Plastic is porous and although it doesn’t acquire the smell right away, it does over time. Apart from steel, it also has rubber seals that were strategically placed to keep odour from coming out.

It’s a child-friendly pail, as it has a sliding lid that can be locked when not in use. Your toddler won’t be able to open it and reach inside or take out any soiled diapers. This sliding lid also minimises air disruption so the smell is kept inside. However, this sliding lid does make it a little harder to open than foot-pedaled types.

You can use any other garbage bag for this pail. As this often comes in your monthly budget, there won’t be any major changes with it.

Dekor Classic Hands-Free Diaper Pail

“Child-proof and reusable”

This guarantees that the air disruption is minimised and that the odour won’t come out.

This design also has strategically placed rubber seals — another way to lock the odour inside the pail. The refills are also made to keep odour at bay. Dekor refills are powder-scented to help fight the bad smell from disposed diapers. However, the biggest Dekor pail can only keep up to 60 newborn diapers. But the continuous refill makes it easier to dispose and change the bag.

Since it has several openings, each one has a child-proof lock that makes sure your children won’t be able to reach into the pail and get suffocated with the refills or pull the dirty diapers away. Plus, it has a hands-free foot pedal so you can use it without using your hands.

Parents have found it a little hard to segregate diapers when they throw it in their usual bins. Plus, it’s usually far from nursery rooms. With the best diaper pail for twins, you can keep it in the same room as your changing table and keep odour locked, as it’s one of the main features of any diaper pail. It’s convenient while making sure your place doesn’t smell.

If you’re expecting twins, you’ve probably already heard that you shouldn’t “buy two of everything.” And it’s true!

The diaper bag is a perfect example of this. You don’t really want to be carrying around two heavy diaper backpacks along with your two babies, do you? One diaper bag should be enough.

best overnight diapers

Now, you won’t find a whole lot of diaper bags marketed for twins. But there are plenty of diaper bags that are large enough to carry everything your babies need for a day out or even for an overnighter with the grandparents.

Choosing a diaper backpack for twins

First, why a backpack?

Diaper bags come in various forms, including totes, messenger bags, satchels, convertibles, and more. Personally, I would go for a diaper backpack.

Over the years, I’ve found that backpacks make the perfect diaper bag. They’re roomy and have multiple compartments for all your and your babies’ things. They keep your hands free to carry your babies or wrangle your toddlers.

Backpacks also make excellent diaper bags because they come in so many styles and materials that will suit both you and your partner.

Before you shop for a diaper backpack for twins, check out this list of the most important factors to consider:

Lots of pockets

This is the biggest reason you need to buy a dedicated diaper bag instead of just repurposing any old bag you find in the back of your closet, like your old backpack from college. Babies require a lot of stuff. A lot.

Ask any parent of a singleton and he or she will tell you that the things you need for a day out with just one baby can fill up an entire backpack. Now imagine how much stuff twins will need. A diaper backpack for twins shouldn’t just be spacious — it should also have a good number of pockets so you can stay organized.

You don’t want to spend long minutes digging into the black hole of your diaper bag for wipes when one of your babies has a poop blowout.

With dedicated pockets for all your things, you’ll immediately know if something is missing instead of trying to look through the chaos of stuff inside the backpack.

A place for everything and everything in its place, as they say. Ideally, a diaper backpack should have specific pockets for baby bottles, wipes, a changing pad, diapers, your keys, and your phone. Look for insulated pockets for bottles and pockets on the shoulder straps where you can tuck wipes and small items.

Baby-friendly features

Most diaper bags come with a changing pad that fits right into the bag. This is important because you never know when you’ll need to change your babies’ diapers when you’re out and about.

You should also look for other features like stroller straps, pacifier pockets, wipe dispensers, and other useful baby-friendly features. I recommend getting a diaper backpack for twins that have these where you can easily reach them instead of having to dig through the bag. Look for a diaper backpack that has a wide opening, zippered pockets, and a light-colored interior lining that allows you to quickly find what you’re looking for.

Other nifty features to look for are a key ring or an extendable keychain, a theft-proof pocket for your wallet and other valuables, and elasticized side pockets so you can quickly pull out wipes or tissues during emergencies.

Spacious, but not too spacious

Aside from having enough room for all the things your two little darlings need, a good diaper backpack should also have sufficient space for your things. You don’t want to be carrying two bags when you can make do with one. Look for a diaper bag that has a special “mommy” pocket where you can keep your wallet, phone, cosmetics kit, keys, and other essentials.

And while you certainly need a bigger diaper backpack for twins, you also need to avoid getting a bag that is too big. What do I mean by this? Simply that you have to find the balance and not end up with either a diaper backpack that is too small or one that is so big it tempts you into carrying stuff that you and your babies don’t really need.

Durability

You’ll want a diaper backpack that will not easily rip or tear with daily use. This is a major requirement given that your poor diaper bag will definitely be taking a beating in the first few months of your twins’ lives.

In my opinion, spending a little bit more for a diaper backpack that has good quality fabric and sturdy straps and zippers is worth it. The alternative, of course, is going for something cheaper and possibly finding that you have to buy a new one when a strap breaks or the material starts to fall apart.

Versatility

When you shop for a diaper backpack for twins, think about where and how you will be using the bag. If you travel frequently, the diaper backpack should be small enough to stow under the seat. It should also have stroller straps and be waterproof. If you like to spend time outdoors or live somewhere warm, get a diaper backpack that is made of breathable material. If you will be carting the babies to work with you, get a diaper bag that’s stylish enough for the office.

Comfortable straps

A diaper backpack should have padded shoulder straps so that the straps don’t dig into and chafe your skin when it’s loaded with your babies’ things. You should also check for shoulder straps that are wide enough so that the weight is evenly distributed.

Style

This is really up to you and your partner, but here’s a tip: Babies, as you know, get really messy. Diaper backpacks in lighter colors will easily show stains and be a pain to clean. If you don’t want to worry about keeping your bag clean, get a diaper backpack in a dark color like black, navy, or slate gray.

Important Features of Twin Cribs

For first-time expecting mothers, buying every accessory your baby needs is important, especially when you’re pregnant with twins. Once they are out in this world, you won’t really have the time to go out and buy them. Plus, having them already laid out in front of you after your birth will make it easier for you to manage two little human babies.

twin baby beds

Bassinets are a lot like a crib, except they are more compact for portability and for traveling. The sides are also lower for easier access, and a few other features like a cover for when you’re babies are sleeping. Plus, there is often movement such as extra wheels so you can use it for travelling with your twins.

Bassinets are mostly used by babies during their first few months only, unlike a crib where they can use it even as toddlers. You might want to consider this when choosing whether you’re buying a crib or a bassinet.

This is our review of the best bassinets for those who are expecting twins. That means this review is for mothers who are expecting multiple pregnancies instead of singleton pregnancies. There are bassinets with only one baby basket (or the area where the babies are laid).

That being said, here are things you should consider when buying bassinets for twins.

Twin Bassinet Functionality

A lot of bassinets often have storage areas and pockets underneath the baby area or on the sides. These hold your babies’ diapers, milk dispensers, clothes, and other accessories. This is useful, especially when going out for a vacation.

There are also some bassinets that have attached milk bottle holders so misplacing the bottle won’t be a problem. Some others, meanwhile, can be turned into a changing table for when your baby needs a diaper change or a change of clothes. Others are foldable or can be attached to twin strollers.

Functions and features such as detachable baby baskets are also available on the market now. Finding something that can be multifunctional will be a great way of saving money as well as making sure everything you need for your baby is in one place, even when you travel.

Portability

Movement or portability is a matter of preference. Think about your needs and how the situation will be around the house or even outdoors.

For those who often move from room to room or requires a lot of travelling, a foldable, smaller, lightweight, and with wheels may be the best option. Something that can also be turned into a hand-carry baby basket is a good choice, too — especially when you have someone to help you with the other twin.

Nonetheless, be sure that each of these features can be locked into place. For example, the wheels should have a mechanism that allows you to wheel it easily, but the same mechanism should be able to lock it into place, disabling motion.

Safety Standards for Newborn Twins

Finding out whether it’s safe or not is essential when it comes to finding an item for your baby. Since your twins might be on a bassinet for a long period of time, be sure it is able to support them and keep them safe every time they are there.

That means it should have a safe and durable structure or a mattress that is soft but won’t bury your baby. For the best results, you should find bassinets that have the seal of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the Juvenile Products Manufacturer’s Association (JPMA). Bassinets and cribs that have passed their strict requirement mean they are safe to use.

Movement

Some bassinets have certain mechanisms such as a quick-release latch could make it into a cradle that rocks gently. There are also some types that sway while the wheels are locked, however, these are more battery operated than a certain type of mechanism involved.

These types of bassinets can be intimidating, especially with one for twins. But these types do help get your children to sleep soundly as if you were the one rocking them. This helps you get the rest you need.

Age and Weight Limits

Knowing the weight limit is important, especially with bassinets for twins. The maximum weight it can handle should at least be the total estimated weight of your babies when they reach the age limit for the bassinet. This makes you feel more at peace that it can support them and keep them safe.

Apart from that, knowing how long you can use the product is good to know. This at least helps you with your budget. Spending thousands on something you can only use for three months isn’t really a good investment.

However, some bassinets do not really add any age limit. For this, you should use the weight limit as a sign of when you should give it up. If they are still within the weight limit for at least 6 months, you should consider your babies’ movements and see whether they are still safe with lower walls.

Walls

The structure and the breathability of the walls are two important factors you should consider.

Some of the best walls are made with wood slats that are commonly used for cribs. This ensures stability, durability, and it usually has gaps in between so babies are able to breathe at any position.

However, most compact bassinets for twins nowadays have stainless steel corners and a mesh-like wall that keeps your baby safe but also makes it possible for air to flow easily around and inside the bassinet. Even when your babies face the wall, they’d be able to breathe comfortably.

Things to Consider when Buying an Umbrella Stroller for Twins

An umbrella stroller is a must-have if you are expecting or you already have twins. Twin strollers have two attached seats so it’s definitely bigger than the average single stroller. However, as most umbrella strollers are, these are often more compact than the jogging or standard twin strollers and portability is something you really when you have two babies when you go out.

Best Umbrella Stroller for Twins

Generally, umbrella strollers are foldable, smaller, and lighter in weight. These are specifically made with these things in mind so you can travel easier and lighter even when you have twins.

While an umbrella stroller for twins might not have the complete features of a standard side by side twin stroller, many of today’s products have enough to compete with a standard type. That, and the fact that you can bring it along easily makes it a good choice for parents who travel a lot.

However, if you or your family stays home all the time and when you go out, you need all the convenience of additional features, it might be better to look at standard strollers.

That being said, here are a few things you need to consider when you’re shopping for an umbrella stroller for your twins.

Size: Lightweight Stroller

The first thing you should consider is its size. When buying an umbrella stroller for twins, you need to consider the age and overall size of your twins and see whether they can comfortably fit on the allotted seats. They should be able to move their hands and feet.

But more than the size of the seats, you should look into the overall size of the stroller. Will it be able to fit your space for storage? Will it fit public transportations if necessary? The size can also affect its performance. Bigger strollers are often harder to push, bulky, and harder to bring along when travelling.

Wheels

The number and types of wheels on your umbrella stroller for twins could also affect your overall experience with it. The most common wheel designs are four double wheels — two on the front and two on the back. However, a lot of twins’ strollers have a total of six double walls, with two additional pairs in the middle. These provide more stability and ease of movement for a bigger stroller.

But dual wheels could be problematic when there’s a change of terrain. It becomes less stable when you’re on a rougher road. Apart from that, changing directions proves to be harder than a single wheel.

Safety Features

Safety is important with any type of products for your children. For strollers, there are two main components you need to find: a wheel brake and a harness.

Brakes are able to lock the wheels and keep them from moving, allowing the stroller to stand freely on its own and have stability even when your twins are moving.

Meanwhile, harnesses keep your babies strapped on the seat but allows them to move their body freely. They can lean forward a few inches without losing their balance and toppling forward. Since a lot of umbrella stroller for twins don’t have bars or trays in front of the seat, a five-point or three-point harness would be better.

Features

Additional features are always welcome. For umbrella strollers, the most common features are storage areas where you can place their clothes and diapers and a milk bottle holder. However, you can also find several other features such as reclining adjustments or oversized canopies.

Finding any other features that could make your job more convenient can be a good choice for those who are looking for something extra.

Durability and Stability

Finding a durable umbrella stroller for twins will be beneficial in the long run. It can be used as your babies grow into toddlers, which means you can use it for years. That’s real value for money.

Durability also means it can withstand wear and tear with frequent use. If you have a durable and a stable stroller, it’s also highly likely that your twins will be safe whenever they use it.

To find a durable umbrella stroller, it’s best to find one with high-quality materials and a strong and solid build. You should also find a stroller with a seal of approval from JPMA and/or ASTM.

Canopy

As an umbrella stroller for twins, the canopies are a big part of the stroller. Today, there are bigger canopies that can protect your children from the weather — may it be the bright and hot sun or a slight drizzle. It can also give your children privacy when they are sleeping so they’d feel cozy and safe in their little spaces until you get home.

Canopies should be thicker than ordinary umbrellas as well as darker if necessary so that light won’t penetrate it and give your twins some shade, especially under the sun.

Picking a Highchair for Your Twins

Highchairs are pieces of furniture that are used by babies and toddlers. They are seated and strapped on the chair with a fixed tray in front of them. Normally, older babies have to be spoon-fed but as they grow older, you can place their food on the tray so they can learn how to feed themselves.

twins high chair

These days, highchairs are also used so your baby can take a seat with you at the table. You won’t have troubles keeping them away from your plate and getting your hands full. However, you’ll be able to keep them safely near you.

Babies tend to start learning how to sit on their own by six months. They’d start eating solids between 4 to 6 months. That being said, highchairs are not really a priority unless that time comes. But it’s better than you already start looking for possible highchairs for twins. You’d have to consider a few factors so it may take a while.

Highchairs are for twins who are at least 6 months old up until 3 years old or until they reach the maximum weight limit. If you have an older child or your babies are newborns, you might want to pass on it and wait until it’s the proper time to buy one.

That being said, here are a few things to consider when you’re buying highchairs for twins.

Child’s Safety

Safety features should be the main factor you should consider. There should be a harness or a buckle or even leg straps — anything that will keep them from falling face first or something that can keep them stable and in place. There should also be a crotch post to stop them from sliding down the seat.

There are some highchairs that have wheels and if you want something that can move, make sure that the wheels can be locked. However, it’s best if you choose a type without one, especially when you have hyperactive twins.

Some chairs are foldable and when you buy one, make sure it doesn’t snap on your fingers or accidentally close when you’re trying to put on or take your child from the chair. Plus highchairs for twins that have a wider base often have better stability. Make sure that it doesn’t stumble or topple over when your babies are moving.

Look for items that have a JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association), ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), and/or CPSC (Consumer Products Safety Commission) logos.

Age and Weight Limit

This will determine how long you’d be able to use the highchair.

Most highchairs can be used until they are 2 or 3 years old or when they reach a maximum of 30 to 35 pounds. Buying something like this would be a good investment since you’ll be able to use it for a longer period of time. This is something you really should consider especially when you’re likely going to buy two highchairs for your twins.

Type of Highchair

There are certain types of highchairs available today. Each one looks different and often has different strengths and disadvantages.

  • Standard highchair – This is the most common type you’ll see complete with every necessary accessory such as safety features and a tray.
  • European-style – This is often a tray-less highchair where you’ll have easier access to your child. You can pull them closer to your table so you can feed them. These can often accommodate toddlers and even beyond.
  • Portable/hook-on – These are the types of highchairs for twins that are highly portable and can be used when traveling. You can hook them onto a table but make sure that your table is strong enough to hold its weight and the chair is able to withstand the weight of your twins.
  • Booster seat – These are often for toddlers who can sit well on their own but has problems reaching the table. It also has some type of harness or security belt to keep them in place.

Style and Features

If there’s one hard thing to consider, it’s pretty much choosing the design and style of the highchair. Each has its own distinct look and there are several others that have varying features which make the highchair more convenient and comfortable for your twins.

However, these considerations are often subjective. You might find one highchair better than the other. But it’s always best when you can find a highchair that you believe will benefit you as well as your twins.

Space

Not everyone has enough space to put another piece of furniture, especially when you need two highchairs for twins. However, there are certain types that are foldable and smaller than usual. These can help save space whenever you’re using them or not.

Then again, make sure that your foldable highchair is safe for you and your babies.

If you have more space to spare, it’s still better to measure the available space and look at the dimensions of the chair so you won’t have troubles later on when you accidentally bought a bigger highchair than your space.

Cost

Lastly, consider the cost. The difference between the price points of various highchairs for twins can be significant depending on the brand and features. Since you’ll be buying two highchairs for your babies, it might be best to find a price point that you’re comfortable with while making sure the features are exactly what you need.

The Ins and Outs of Breast Pumps

There are a lot of mothers who are breastfeeding their babies and have no problems producing sufficient milk. But that isn’t always the case with everyone. Some find it hard to produce breast milk even when they have just given birth. There are even some parents that actually stopped breastfeeding as they seemed to have run out of milk, as well.

And then, there are those mothers who have breast milk, but find it difficult to produce enough for twins.

For these moments, a breast pump is handy, especially when you have two or more babies to feed at one time. Breast pump for twins are often anything a mom of one can use — however, the best ones are able to stimulate your breasts for more milk.

Apart from lack of milk, a breast pump can also provide you with more time for yourself. You only need to pump at least twice a day for enough milk and then have it saved for the rest of the day. You won’t need to keep your baby attached to you so they can feed. Plus when you have twins, it’s feasible they’d get hungry at the same time and the usual method won’t work. This gives you and your partner a chance to do the feeding.

That is why breast pump for twins work well for working moms. It gives them the chance to provide the best possible milk for their twins even when they are away from them. That being said, we’ll review some of the best breast pumps so you can maximise your milk and help you save more time.

Here are some of the things you should consider when buying a breast pump.

Breast Pump for Twins: Manual or Electric?

There are two types of breast pump for twins: manual and electric. While you can just pick anything for your preference, it’s better to know when using a manual pump works best or when an electric type is the best choice.

Basically, you use manual breast pumps when:

  • You have a steady flow of breast milk.
  • You stay with your baby for most of the time.
  • Pumping is more of a way of relieving yourself from engorged breasts.
  • Going out isn’t as often as it used to be and usually when only necessary.
  • You’re feeding one baby or you don’t feed as often throughout the day.
  • If you don’t mind pumping manually.

An electric type would be a better choice if:

  • Your routine everyday requires you to be away from your baby for a long time.
  • You’re traveling and won’t be staying with your babies for a few days.
  • There isn’t a steady flow of breast milk or if it’s rather low.
  • You need to finish pumping as soon as possible.

There are also double electric breast pumps that will make the work faster and easier.

Portability

A portable pump is good when you’re planning to have a vacation with the family. It can also be good when you are working and you need to relieve your breasts of the milk. Portability could also mean you’re able to move it around the house quickly without much effort.

For portability, a good breast pump would either be lightweight, or it has a container with everything you need so you can carry it without you rather auspiciously too. While there is nothing to be ashamed of breastfeeding, it does get a little awkward obviously bringing a breast pump outdoors.

Cost

Most people would think that expensive products tend to work better than cheaper ones. However, that isn’t always the case. The best product can be subjective as what works for you might not work well for others. That means an expensive breast pump for twins might not suit you even when you’ve spend hundreds on it.

Nonetheless, remember that electric pumps can be more expensive than manual pumps but these products deliver various advantages that a manual breast pump can’t. In the long run, it’ll also be more cost-effective than buying formula milk.

Cleaning and Hygiene

Remember, you’re feeding your baby with the breast milk. As much as possible, your pump should be clean so the breast milk you get will be safe for your baby’s consumption.

When looking for any kind of breast pump, it should be easy to clean. You must be able to reach into every part when cleaning it and make sure it doesn’t accumulate any dirt, dust, or leftover milk.

It’s also good to buy a breast pump for twins with a closed system. This guarantees the accumulated milk will be clean and just the way it is as it went out of your breasts.

Ease of Use

This is really a matter of preference. Some women will say that a manual pump is easier for them while others say an electric type will make it easier. There are also those who like two breast pump for twins as the best and easiest solution. Of course, people will also say that a certain brand works better than the other.

However, most of the popular types with positive reviews from customers are often the ones that are portable, works silently, delivers well, and is easy to assemble. You can start with those types of pumps and find the best one that works for you.

Suction

A pump’s suction power could also be a great factor to consider. Some can be a little sensitive and a powerful suction could be painful. However, it does prove to be more effective than with mild suction power. Find somewhere in between that suits your preferences well.
