Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 28 Weeks

28 weeks pregnant with twins! We’re officially in the third trimester, and hurrying down the home stretch. The coming weeks are going to be full of challenges, but also fantastic moments that you can look forward to.

Read on to find out what you’re going to face this week, and how it’s going to affect you.

Your Twin Babies at 28 Weeks Pregnant

Your babies probably won’t be getting much longer from now on. Their skeletons are basically fully developed and slowly getting harder.

Instead, they’re going to be putting on the weight, filling in subdermal fat layers under the skin, to give them that familiar chubby baby look we all know and love.

Expect your twins to be around 14 or 15 inches long, but this week, they’ll have put on another couple of ounces, weighing around 2.2 pounds, or the size of an eggplant!

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 28 Weeks

Once they hit this part of their twin pregnancy, the thing that most women tend to face is trouble sleeping, including randomly waking up in the middle of the night, and not being able to get back to sleep.

Whilst it might be frustrating, the best thing to do in the meantime is something relaxing. Grab a good book and cuddle up on the couch, make yourself a cup of tea, or listen to some light music and do some breathing exercises.

You’re also still going to be dealing with other symptoms, including:

  • All over aching: Your pregnancy is starting to really hammer your body, with all the extra weight you’re carrying, as well as the effect your hormones are having on you. The advice for dealing with this is always the same as it’s ever been. Relax and stretch, try breathing exercises or yoga, light exercise like swimming or walking, or even a massage.
  • Lack of breath: As your twins keep getting bigger, there’s going to be less and less space in your abdomen for you. Don’t push yourself, and taking a break every now and then isn’t a bad idea.
  • Leaking boobs: Your boobs are pretty much ready for your coming babies already, so don’t be surprised if you get the occasional spot of leakage. And don’t worry if it’s pretty yellow, that’s colostrum, and it’s completely normal.
  • Braxton Hicks contractions: These are going to keep getting stronger for the next few weeks. As long as they’re only occasional, and stop if you move about, they’re nothing to worry about. If they last a long time, or keep coming back, then contact your doctor.
  • Lack of sleep: We mentioned this earlier, but it bears repeating. You might be having serious trouble sleeping, and it could get worse over the next few weeks. There’s so many reasons why, but the big obvious ones are hormones, (again) and nerves.

28 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

You might be having a 28 week pregnancy scan this week, but it’s not a guarantee. If you’ve had a more complicated pregnancy, or if you’re having identical twins, your doctor might be more likely to scan you, just to make sure that everything’s going on fine.

Don’t worry if you aren’t having a scan. That’s a good thing. No news is good news, right?

If you are having a scan, don’t expect anything that you haven’t already experienced. It’s just a regular check up, to make sure everything is fine with your twins.

Things to Do This Week for a Healthy Pregnancy

  • Talk to your doctor about upcoming scans, and book them in. You should be having a 30 week scan, at the very least.
  • Start a kick count, to monitor your twin’s progress. Try and do it at the same time each day, because your twins will have their own routine, and see how long it takes to count 10 kicks.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 27 Weeks

You’re 27 weeks pregnant with twins! Do you know what that means? It means you’re officially out of the second trimester.

Now you’re officially into the final straight of your twin pregnancy. It might get a little tougher from here on out, but you’ve got this far, so we’re sure that you’re going to be able to deal with it, no matter what gets thrown at you.

Right now, your twins are getting pretty damn big. They’re 14 to 15 inches long, and can weigh up to 2 whole pounds. That’s as big as your average sized head of lettuce. Your twins might be slightly smaller than this, but not by that much. No wonder you’re getting so big, right?

It’s not just size that’s increasing. Their awareness of the world is going up and up. Little eyes will be opening and closing, and they’ll react to light and sound from the outside world, too.

They’ll be far more able to respond to all this sudden stimulus, too, turning heads away from light sources to sleep, with a sleep schedule that’s getting more and more regular, and even sucking their thumbs for comfort!

If they haven’t already, sexual organs will be developing soon, with boys testes making the journey down to where they’ll eventually end up, and the girls clitoris developing and becoming prominent.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 27 Weeks

You’re still going to be feeling the same sort of symptoms this week, and they’re steadily going to get stronger. On the upside, you’re probably used to this by now, and you’ve got your own strategies for dealing with it all.

  • Braxton Hicks contractions: These will still be going on, and might last as long as two minutes at a time. Expect them to get more frequent, and last a little longer, as you go through the coming weeks. Remember that they’re nothing to worry about, unless they ever become irregular, painful, or last longer than a few minutes.
  • Leg and foot cramps: Hydration is a massive help to deal with cramping, and if you’re suffering, make sure you stretch your legs often, as if you’re on a plane for DVT.
  • Backache: You might also have an aching back. Especially as you’re carrying twins, and the increased weight is far more than your body is used to. Having to sleep in a different position than you’re probably used to doesn’t help, either, so if you’re struggling, keep yourself supported and comfortable throughout the day, and at night, consider sleeping propped up with multiple pillows, or a dedicated pregnancy pillow.
  • Constipation and haemorrhoids: Your twins put a lot of pressure on you down there, and it can make going to the loo a lot more difficult than you might be used to. Eat a balanced diet, make sure you’re getting enough water, and if you have to, take medication that’s been recommended to you by your doctor. Don’t worry though, girlies, this issue should clear up once you’ve had your kids.
  • Shortness of breath: Your twins are crowding out space in your abdomen right now, making it hard for your lungs to expand to full capacity. If you get a little short of breath, it’s okay to take a break sometimes, so don’t feel bad about having to sit down for half a minute occasionally.
  • Bladder ‘issues’: It’s an uncomfortable thought, (and a more uncomfortable experience) but all that pressure on your bladder from carrying two babies can cause you to accidentally pee a little bit when you sneeze, yawn, or even just go up stairs. To deal with this, try not to walk around with a full bladder, and if you have to, wear a pantyliner.

27 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

It’s doubtful you’ll be having an ultrasound this week, but as of next week, expect them to become a lot more frequent. As often as two a month. So relax, and get used to them.

Check out our newborn twins shopping list here.

Things to Do This Week for a Healthy Pregnancy

  • Set up next week’s ultrasound appointment. Even if you’ve booked it, plan a few things that you can do in the waiting room. I’ve always found it’s an ideal time to plan things like your baby shower.
  • You’re carrying twins. That means that you’re at an increased chance of early delivery. From next week, that chance shoots up, so if you’re worried, or you’ve had any indication from your doctor that you might be likely to have an early delivery, talk to your healthcare professionals and see what you can do about it
  • It’s also good to familiarise yourself with the signs of early labor, especially if you’re having frequency Braxton Hicks contractions

Let’s talk about being on the go with your twins. It gets complicated fast. You need gear which can not only provide value to your infants, but also make your life easier.

  • A car seat. This is obviously a must have. It’s worth getting one which you can use beyond the infancy period. This one will more than satisfy.
  • Having a diaper bag is a key component to any outing. This is our favorite for twins.
  • Why not set up your Baby Registry?
  • A stroller is another must have. In the first few months it is recommended to use a frame stroller like this one, which you can use in combination with a car seat. Makes life easier.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 26 Weeks

You’re 26 weeks pregnant with twins. You’re probably starting to slow down a little now, considering you’ve put on almost two stone in extra weight. But there’s only more to come.

Read on to learn what you’re going to be facing this week, and whether it’s only going to get worse…

Your babies might be opening their eyes for the first time! That’s amazing! For the past few months, your babies eyelids have been fused shut to keep their eyes safe and allow the retinas to grow without being damaged. But now, they’re ready to start seeing the world.

Unfortunately, there’s not much to see in the darkness of the womb, but if you walk around in direct sunlight or shine a bright light at your belly, you might feel your babies move or kick in response!

In terms of size, your little ones could be anywhere from 1.7lbs to 2lbs in weight, and are almost 14 inches from head to toe. As twins, expect them to be a little smaller than the average, but still very close to this benchmark.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 26 Weeks

As you progress through your twin pregnancy, the list of symptoms does as well. Expect the same sort of things you’ve been facing for the last few weeks, but slightly worse.

  • Swelling: Swollen feet, swollen legs, swollen hands and fingers. Swollen everything. Although this is normal, it is annoying. Keep yourself on the move as much as possible to encourage the fluids and blood in your body to flow. You only need to contact your doctor if your swelling suddenly gets worse, or becomes painful.
  • Braxton Hicks contractions: You might start having these this week if you haven’t already. To go over common ground, this is just your body getting ready for the delivery, all those weeks in the future. As long as they don’t last long, it’s nothing to worry about. If they start coming in waves, or last longer than a minute or so, call the doctor.
  • Issues getting to sleep: You should be sleeping on your side anyway, which can be hard for some women to get used to, but it’s probably going to get harder and harder to get a decent night’s shut eye the closer you get to your due date, because of hormones and all those aches and pains. Make sure you’re using a pregnancy pillow for better support.
  • Forgetting things: It’s called pregnancy brain, and it’s a recognised, if unexplainable phenomenon. In our opinion though? A combination of nasty hormones and all that damn pressure you’re under can combine to make remembering everything you have to do hard. That’s why we always recommend notebooks and lists. Can’t forget something if it’s written down, right?
  • Increase in blood pressure: Your blood pressure has been steadily increasing over the past few weeks, which can contribute to other issues like dizziness and headaches. It’s normally not anything to worry about, but if it gets too high your doctor might want to monitor it more closely, because it can be a sign of underlying issues.

26 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

You shouldn’t be having scans right now. There’s literally no reason to. As of week 28 it all goes on. You hit the third trimester, scans become far more regular (every two weeks, rather than four) and it becomes much more important to monitor what’s going on.

So try and relax. After all these are the last couple of easy weeks you can expect to have.

  • Your babies are aware of the world around them now, including your voice, so spend some time with them, and with yourself.

This week were talking about sleep again because it is so critical to their development, but also for your sanity! Here are some recommendations:

  • You enjoy sleeping on a comfortable mattress right? Well so do the little ones. This crib mattress is our favorite.
  • A white noise machine can help create a soothing, sleep inducing environment.
  • You’re going to need baby monitors. This one comes highly recommended and has the option to add a second camera – perfect for twins 🙂
  • Why not set up your Baby Registry?

25 Weeks Pregnant with Twins: Ultrasound, Symptoms, and More

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 25 Weeks

25 weeks pregnant with twins means we’re getting real close to the third trimester of your pregnancy.

Before you get there, you should try and get everything that you can sorted. That means all the medical stuff, everything you need to do at home, as well as the all important things like picking out names and sorting out your babies nursery and first month clothes.

Your babies have gained almost a quarter of a pound since last week, weighing in as they do at a pound and a half, with a height of almost 14 inches. Normally around 13.6 inches, to be exact.

Remember how last week we told you that your babies lungs are filling out, ready for that all important first breath? Well, that’s still happening, but their blood vessels and circulatory system are doing double duty, as well, filling their lungs with blood vessels to ferry all the oxygen throughout their body.

On top of this, their skin is getting a healthier glow about it. Not because they’re getting thicker skin, or even more tanned.

Instead, it’s because the network of capillaries that we all have under our skin is spiralling outwards, and that makes them seem a little more pink.

Not that you can see any of this, of course…

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 25 Weeks

Right now, singleton moms start to feel the pressure of their growing baby. But you’re carrying twins, which makes the effect that it’s going to have on your body that much greater. Right now, you might be suffering from any of the below:

  • Bloating or gas: A combination of hormones and pressure on your digestive tract can cause excess gas to build up, as well as an uncomfortable full or bloated sensation. Just … apologise to your partner when you’re both in bed tonight, right?
  • Constipation: You might also have issues with constipation, so make sure you’re eating a healthy, high fibre diet and drinking as much water as you can.
  • Hemorrhoids: The final part in the horrible trifecta is hemorrhoids. They get more and more common in the last weeks of pregnancy, and it’s all due to the weight and pressure your growing babies are putting on your digestive system. And of course, all that gas and constipation aren’t going to help. So do what you can to get those two symptoms under control first, and hopefully you won’t suffer too badly from this.
  • Bladder control: The same cause as all of the above, the extra pressure on your bladder can cause you to feel like you need to pee. All the time.
  • Heartburn: The last of the digestive issues you might be facing this week. And yes, in case you didn’t know, heartburn is a digestive thing. Your babies are pushing on your stomach, which can force stomach acid upwards. Which causes that uncomfortable burning sensation. You should be fine with most over the counter antacids, but if you’re worried, there’s no harm in checking with your doctor.
  • Braxton Hicks contractions: Most women start feeling these at around the 28th week mark, but your uterus has actually been flexing and practicing the muscular contractions necessary for childbirth since week seven or eight. Braxton Hicks contractions aren’t anything to worry about. They should only last a few seconds, and normally stop if you get up or otherwise move around. If they last a while, keep getting stronger, or they start to slow you down, contact your doctor, because it might be an early delivery.

25 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

Pretty soon, you’re going to be having a scan every couple of weeks instead of every month. But right now, you’re probably not due another scan.

If you are, then you can expect it to be much the same as it has been. Your baby will probably look a little chubbier, and a little bigger than last time. But apart from that, there’s nothing specific to look out for.

Things to Do This Week for a Healthy Pregnancy

  • Check your weight gain again. You should be gaining around a pound a week, so you’ve probably put on around 25 or 30 pounds by now. If you’re worried, check with your doctor on your next scan, or before if you’re particularly underweight.
  • If you haven’t already, make sure you get a glucose screen test done. It’s essential to pick up gestational diabetes as early as possible, so you can work with it.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 24 Weeks

24 weeks pregnant with twins, and your little twinnies are growing faster than ever.

They’re really packing on the weight, and because of that, on your end you can expect more of the symptoms that affect your body, like aches and pains.

Read on to find out what to expect this week, and what you can do about it.

Your Twin Babies at 24 Weeks Pregnant

By now, your twins are almost a foot long, and probably weigh somewhere around 1.3lbs. If you need an image, pick up an average sized cantaloupe and cradle it in your hands. Surprising, right?

This is because your babies are putting on anywhere up to 5 or 6 ounces of weight per week right now. Bones are thickening, muscles are strengthening, and the layer of subcutaneous fat we all have under the skin is getting thicker and thicker.

On top of this, your baby’s faces are pretty much how they will be when they’re born, including having all of their hairs, from the hair on their head, all the way to tiny little eyelashes and eyebrows.

Although, right now all of their hair is pure white, because the pigmentation process that gives their hair its natural color isn’t being produced yet.

Internally, your babies are learning how to breathe, even though they’re still in the womb. Their lungs are producing more and more of the distinctive branched cell patterns that absorb oxygen with each breath, ready for that first big gasp (and probably cry) when they come out of the womb!

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 24 Weeks

Right now, you’re starting to get a taste of the coming symptoms of pregnancy, and as you get bigger, expect them to only get worse. But that’s fine. This is a great opportunity to see what’s coming and learn how to deal with it. So right now, you can expect to be feeling:

  • Cramps in legs and feet: If your legs are aching, it could just be that you’re tired and overworked from all the extra weight you’re carrying. Or it could be that you’re dehydrated. If you’re suffering from regular cramping in your lower half, try drinking a little more water, and see what happens.
  • Swollen legs and feet: Related to the above, you might also be suffering from swollen legs or feet. You’re already holding more fluid and have a higher blood pressure than normal, so this is nothing to be concerned about. Just try and get a little bit of exercise every now and then. Don’t sit in one position for too long. And especially try not to restrict your feet or legs in tight or uncomfortable clothing.
  • Backache: Your babies are getting bigger, so the pressure they’re putting on your body and spine is that much bigger too. If it’s debilitating, then see the doctor. Other than that, you’re just going to have to cope with it right now I’m afraid.
  • Linea nigra: Literally, the ‘dark line.’ It’s caused by all the hormones in your body, and fades naturally once you’ve given birth. It might last a little bit longer if you breastfeed, so don’t be concerned if it takes a little bit longer for yours to go.

24 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

You might be having an ultrasound this week, but most of the big scans are done for the time being.

Instead, in the next few weeks you might be having a glucose screening test, to check for gestational diabetes.

Don’t worry. It’s a relatively unobtrusive check up, and all you have to do is drink a sugary drink that they’ll give you, then sit around for an hour or so reading magazines and checking Facebook until they call you back in.

In most cases, that’ll be the end of it, but for some women, there will be another test to see if they’re fine, that’s much the same thing.

Either way, your doctors know what they’re doing, and there’s absolutely nothing to worry about. So just relax and go with it. More unnecessary stress is never a good thing.

Things to Do This Week for a Healthy Pregnancy

  • Book yourself in for your glucose screening challenge if you haven’t already, and make sure you go to it.
  • Finish your nursery, if you haven’t already, and give your home a sweep to see how baby proof it is. You might have a little more work to do, and it’s so much better to do it now rather than later.
  • As you’re carrying twins, you’re more at risk for preterm labor and early delivery. Look up the symptoms, and make sure you know what to expect.

23 weeks pregnant with twins already.

Now we’re over the hump and entering the second half of your pregnancy, the coming weeks are pretty dull when it comes to interesting symptoms and the other effects of a twin pregnancy.

But that’s fine, right? That just gives you more time to get everything in order and get your life sorted. Plus maybe a little bit of time for yourself.

Your Twin Babies at 23 Weeks Pregnant

Your babies are a little bigger than in week 22, or around 11 inches long and maybe a pound in weight. About the size of a mango.

But over the next few weeks, there’s going to be a massive weight gain plan going on, and your babies could potentially weigh double what they weigh right now in only four more weeks!

Right now, your babies have slightly saggy transparent, pinkish red skin, but pretty soon that will start to fill out as they put on weight and the natural fat deposits fill in.

Your babies heartbeats are also getting way stronger. Strong enough in fact to hear through a stethoscope. So when you’re with the doctor, or if you happen to have a stethoscope at home, (for some reason) then you can hear their little hearts!

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 23 Weeks

Right now, you’re probably feeling a little bit less comfy than you have the last few weeks. That’s because your symptoms are getting slightly worse with every passing day.

  • Swollen feet and legs: Swollen limbs is a completely normal part of pregnancy, and I’m afraid its just something you’re going to have to deal with. So put those cute boots away and slip into something more comfortable, try and keep moving, and if you have to sit down for long periods, try and keep your feet elevated.
  • Braxton Hicks contractions: These are going to become a constant companion for the next few weeks. It’s your body, getting ready for what’s going to be a gargantuan effort at the ned of your pregnancy. Think of it as a little gym workout for all the muscles you’re going to use delivering your twins!
  • Backache: Your babies are already putting pressure on your nerves, but as they get heavier, they’re going to put more pressure on your back muscles and spine than you’re probably used to. As you get bigger, take a little more time to relax, and try not to do anything strenuous.
  • Swollen and bleeding teeth and gums: You’ve already got more blood in your body, and a higher blood pressure, so expect your mouth to feel a little more sensitive than normal. If you’ve never experienced bleeding gums or teeth before, then don’t worry if you spit out a little bit of blood. But if your mouth starts to hurt, then it might be worth seeing the dentist. In fact, seeing the dentist a little bit more often can also be a good thing whilst you’re pregnant.

23 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

You probably aren’t having an ultrasound this week, but if you are, you’ll be lucky enough to see your babies faces, completely fully formed and how they’re going to be when they’re born. Minus, maybe, the chubby little cheeks that will fill in as they put on weight.

Your babies will also be growing their own tiny pairs of nipples right now. No, we don’t know why it takes so long either.

Finally, because they’re becoming more sensitive to the outside world, expect them to move around a lot more in general, but also in response to outside stimuli like light and sound, especially your voice.

Things to Do This Week for a Healthy Pregnancy

  • Your fingers might be swelling up a little by now, so if you wear a lot of rings, it might be worth keeping track of them and making sure that they still come on and off easily.
  • Finances are important. Kids are expensive, after all, and you’re having twins! It’s worth going over your financials, and checking what you’ve got set up for your children’s future. That means health insurance, a will check, and starting up savings accounts. It doesn’t matter how much you put in right now. Even a tiny little amount will add up, because of the power of compound interest.

  • A humidifier – these can help create a healthy and sleep inducing environment. This one comes highly recommended.

22 Weeks Pregnant with Twins: Ultrasound, Symptoms, and More

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 22 Weeks

22 weeks pregnant with twins can bring a big change. You’re growing and showing so much faster now that it’s almost crazy. But in terms of how you’re feeling, it should be pretty good.

After all, you should be having your mid pregnancy scan soon, if you haven’t already had it. Once you’ve hit that, you should have a fair idea about how your pregnancy is going to go, whether there’s going to be any real issues during it, and finally, when you should be due!

Your Twin Babies at 22 Weeks Pregnant

At 22 weeks, normally babies hit a really important milestone. One pound in weight! That’s crazy, especially considering just six weeks ago they were less than a quarter of that!

They’re also getting bigger to go along with this weight. They’re around eleven inches long now, or to put it another way, they’re about the size of a coconut. They don’t weigh quite that much yet, though. Instead, pick up a full bag of sugar. That’s how heavy each one might be.

Of course, considering that you’re carrying twins, expect them to both be a little bit smaller than this. But not by much! They’ll hit this milestone soon enough, don’t you worry.

This week, your little ones are working on their senses again, with the senses of sight and hearing getting much more powerful.

Whilst its fair to say that there’s not much to see all comfortable in the womb, there’s certainly a lot to hear, and your babies will be accompanied day and night by the sounds of your heart beating, blood pumping around your body, and your voice. So talk away!

Your babies will also be working on their grip strength, just in case you wanted a pair of little tiny strongmen when you pop. They’ve already been moving around in your womb, but right now, they’ll be gripping at everything they can. Themselves, the walls around them. Even their umbilical cords.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 22 Weeks

  • Stretch marks: You’re still growing, and you’ll probably still be getting stretch marks as you grow for the rest of your pregnancy. As a mom of twins to be, expect your stretch marks to be worse than many singleton moms, but as there’s nothing you can do, you’re just going to have to accept it as a price for your beautiful twins.
  • Higher sex drive: Your hormones are up, which can turn your mind to more intimate time with your partner. Enjoy it while it lasts!
  • Belly button problems: You might wake up one morning to find out your innie belly button has turned into an outie. This is literally just because your belly is expanding, and it’ll go back to the way it was, so don’t worry about it!
  • Vaginal discharge: More blood flow and your body’s own protective measures mean that you might experience more vaginal discharge down there.
  • Swollen limbs: You’re carrying more fluids, both blood and other, with every passing week, so a little bit of swollen hands and feet is normal. If it doesn’t go down, or you swell up particularly fast, it’s a cause for alarm, however, so let your doctor know if this happens.
  • Increased hair growth: Because of all the growth hormones and nutrients flowing through your body, you might find that your hair grows much faster than usual, and comes out thick and lustrous. If people start giving you random compliments, you know why!
  • Shortness of breath: Your babies are crowding out all the space in your abdomen, so sometimes it can be hard to get a full, deep belly breath. If you feel light headed or slightly woozy, then take a break and sit down. Don’t stand near any cliffs!

22 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

You might not believe it, but your babies already sleep as much as a newborn whilst they’re in the womb.

You’ll find they sleep in 12 to 14 hour cycles, so if you go for a scan and don’t see any movement, they could just be sleepy.

Things to Do This Week for a Healthy Pregnancy

  • Are you feeling the odd contraction? Don’t worry. As long as they’re not lasting too long, then you’re just having Braxton Hicks contractions, and they’re completely normal.
  • If you’re having to cut your hair, finger and toenails more often, that’s something a lot of women face. But you’ll also find that your hair and finger nails look so much better. So if you go for the natural look, prepare to look even better in the next few weeks.
  • You might have noticed that your nipples are bigger and darker, which might strike you as weird. Even weirder, you might have noticed that there’s little lumps and bumps around your nipple, on the areola, (that dark part around then nipple itself.) This is completely normal, and a part of your bodies natural defence system. So don’t concern yourself with this.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 21 Weeks

At 21 weeks pregnant with twins, you’re officially half way through! Of course, since you’re having twins, you’re probably expecting to be due early, so this is more an unofficial halfway mark.

Either way, congratulations! You’re doing amazing. The next few weeks aren’t too bad, as side effects go, and until your babies get significantly bigger, you should still have the energy and mobility to take advantage of how good you’re feeling.

Your Twin Babies at 21 Weeks Pregnant

This week, we switch from measuring your babies from crown to rump (or the top of their head to their tiny little bottoms,) to measuring them from head to toe.

This is because they’ve finally stretched out fully, making measuring them correctly a lot easier.

On that note, round about now, your babies are 10 to 11 inches long, and weigh 11 to 12 ounces. Almost three quarters of a pound!

Your babies digestive system has also kicked into gear, and it’s started producing meconium, or the black stuff that will be in the contents of your babies first diapers.

Not only this, but your babies will have started practising swallowing, and their digestive system will be working. Every day, they’ll swallow a little bit of amniotic fluid, and this teaches their bodies how to process food.

It might sound strange, but you should look at what you’re eating right now, too. The foods you eat will actually show up in your amniotic fluid, changing the flavor, and you can be absolutely sure that your babies can taste it, too! They’ve got almost fully developed taste buds, and studies show that women who eat certain foods can affect their children’s attitudes to those foods later in life.

So eat your greens now, so you don’t have to fight to make them eat their greens later!

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 21 Weeks

You’ve hit the second half of your twin pregnancy, and the symptoms that could be coming up in the next couple of weeks are a taster of what you’ll be facing in the third trimester. So learning to live with them now can be a great help.

  • Braxton Hicks contractions: Braxton Hicks contractions are your body practicing for your eventual childbirth. It’s possible to feel them from around the 16th week, but most women tend to start feeling them in the second half of their pregnancy. They should only last 30 seconds at most, and will probably stop if you shift position and move around. They’re absolutely nothing to worry about, and you only need to let your doctor know if they don’t stop after a couple of minutes.
  • Digestion issues: Spicy, sugary and greasy foods can set you off, especially since your digestive system is extra sensitive right now. If you’re struggling, keep a diary of what you eat, and see if you can find a common link.
  • Stretch marks: You’re going to keep getting bigger, especially since you’re having twins, so expect your skin to take the brunt of it. Moisturising and massaging them is supposed to help, but there’s no real way to guarantee that you can rid yourself of them.
  • Leaking boobs: Your boobs should be fully developed by the end of the 24th week and ready for breastfeeding, so if you get a little leakage this early, don’t worry. It’s just a sign that your body has come prepared!

Twin Ultrasound at 21 Weeks

If your mid pregnancy scan was a little late, you might be having it this week instead. Remember, if you’re having your scan a little later, your twins will be slightly more developed than they otherwise might be.

On the upside, that makes any photos and videos you get of the moment even better, so make sure you ask for some mementos.

Things to Do This Week for a Healthy Pregnancy

  • More skin oil might lead to an outbreak of acne in the coming weeks. If it happens, make sure you’re washing your face with soft soap or facial cleansers. Don’t use any acne medication, as it could cause issues with your pregnancy.
  • Make plans for a baby shower. If you need some help, we’ve got everything you need.
  • Talk to your doctor about a glucose screening test. This is normally performed between the 24th and 28th weeks, so you haven’t got long.

20 Weeks Pregnant with Twins: Ultrasound, Symptoms, and More

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 20 Weeks

20 weeks pregnant with twins is a huge milestone. For one, you’re officially half way through your twin pregnancy journey. Well done!

But it’s not only that. You’ve either had or are going to have your mid pregnancy scan in the next week or so, and that could also mean that you’ve recently found out the sexes of your babies!

That’s huge! Now you know what you’re having, you can start to decide on names, get the nursery finalised, and start telling your friends and family.

We also seem to find that having the sex of your children confirmed makes the situation you’re in absolutely real, so if you feel a little bit overwhelmed this week, try and relax. It’s completely normal.

Your Twin Babies at 20 Weeks Pregnant

At this mark, your babies are around 10 ounces in weight, and they’re easily over 6 inches long. Picture holding a small banana cupped in your hand. That’s how big your babies are right now!

They’re also starting to develop their primary sexual characteristics. Boys will have a tiny little penis, and their testicles will have started descending, to find their eventual home between the legs. But first, he’ll have to finish growing a scrotum, because right now, they won’t have anywhere to go.

If you’re having girls instead, they’ll already have millions of eggs in their ovaries. Seven million, to be exact. By the time she’s born, she’ll only have two million, but that’s still far more than you could use in even a hundred lifetimes.

She’s also going to have a fully formed uterus by now, so you’ve got a uterus inside a uterus, which is some twinception going on. As well, her vaginal canal will have started its development this week.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 20 Weeks

You should still be feeling pretty good right now. The symptoms you’ve got are relatively minor, you’ve probably got a lot of energy, and you should have recently found out how well your twins are doing. This tends to translate into you feeling great, so make sure you take advantage!

  • Aches and cramps: Expect all these fun things to still be punishing you, so take it easy, stretch regularly, and treat yourself to little breaks every now and then.
  • Swelling: You’ve probably already experienced some of this. Unless it changes, or it’s sudden, then relax. Swelling is a normal part of pregnancy.
  • Digestive issues: Hormones and the extra space your babies are taking up can cause issues with your digestive system. Try and stay away from foods that you know cause you issues, especially if they’re spicy or high in sugar.
  • Vaginal discharge: Your body is trying to keep your babies safe from bacteria and other problems, so don’t worry about extra vaginal discharge, unless it smells odd, or is a gross color like green or yellow.
  • Lack of breath: You might have already felt this, but as your twins start to crowd out on space, there’s less room for your lungs to expand, so if you feel a little lightheaded, take it easy.

Starting to think about your newborn preparation shopping? We’ve got you covered here.

20 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

You should be having your mid pregnancy scan soon, if you haven’t already.

If you don’t already know, a mid pregnancy scan is a also called an anomaly scan, and the real purpose of it is to check the growth progress of your babies, and make sure that they’re developing properly in the womb.

Expect the scan to take around half an hour. You’re going to be able to see a lot more on this scan. Not because it’s using any more technology, but because your babies are bigger, and there’s a lot more that an ultrasound will pick up.

First off, you’re almost certain to hear heartbeats, and your sonographer should focus on your babies face and hands to make sure everything is fine, before moving on to looking at their internal organs.

If this is your first scan like this, and you’re trying to make sense of it, then you should be looking for whites and greys. Skin and organs will be varying shades of grey, and bones will be white. Everything else will appear black.

Make sure you talk to your sonographer and medical staff before the scan, to let them know where you stand on learning the sex of your babies. Some hospitals won’t tell you without asking, as a matter of course, but it’s good to check.

Things to Do This Week for a Healthy Pregnancy

  • Check your diet for iron levels. As your blood volume goes up, it can sometimes be a struggle to produce enough hemoglobin for all the new red blood cells you need. So snack on a steak, or for the veggies amongst us, lentils, soy and spinach!
  • Look into childbirth classes, especially if this is your first time. Talk to your partner about when you can both go, and make sure you make time. Knowing what you’re in for and the techniques they can teach you to relax really helps when you’re on the delivery table.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 19 Weeks

19 weeks pregnant with twins!

In the next couple of weeks, you’ve got your mid pregnancy ultrasound coming up, and that’s incredible, because that’s both a marker of the middle of your pregnancy, and a time to make sure your babies are completely healthy, as well as find out their sexes, if you want to!

Your Twin Babies at 19 Weeks Pregnant

Almost half a pound in weight, and six inches long, your babies are around the size of mangoes now. Considering how small they were just eight weeks ago, that sort of growth is incredible!

This week, there’s two major events that your babies will be going through.

The first is the growth of the vernix caseosa, a protective skin coating that keeps your babies safe for the rest of their time in the womb. It’s that white coating that you sometimes see on their skin when they’re born, and it works sort of like an anti-wrinkle cream for your babies sensitive skin!

The other major thing? Your babies brains are activating the sensory nervous system, and linking up all of the parts of the brain that work with sight, smell, hearing and taste.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 19 Weeks

The next few weeks worth of symptoms aren’t debilitating, like they were in the first few weeks of pregnancy. Instead, they’re mostly just annoyances that you have to face.

Expect them to get worse over time, though, so learning to deal with them now, whilst they’re relatively minor, is a great choice.

  • Back pain: Your babies are still growing, and still putting pressure on important parts of you insides that don’t particularly like having pressure on them. Make sure you’re stretching, and like we said last week, start getting used to sleeping on your side.
  • Leg cramp: This is related to the back pain, and it’s got pretty much the same cause. Extra pressure on your body, from all the extra weight and your babies pressing on nerves and blood vessels. Keep stretching, and if it gets bad, massage the affected area, even if it hurts!
  • Abdominal pains: Round ligament pain is back. Or maybe it never left. Either way, this is caused by your uterus having to make space for your baby. As a mom to be of twins, expect this to hit you harder than women carrying only one baby. As obviously you need more room.
  • Dizziness: There’s a lot of reasons that you can feel dizzy during pregnancy. First off, you might be slightly short of breath and not know about it, so a little bit of exercise can leave you light headed. Your babies can also put pressure on your blood vessels, and take the lion’s share of blood, which can hit you harder than you might expect. Finally, the stress and tiredness can be surprisingly debilitating, so make sure you’re looking after yourself properly!

19 Weeks Ultrasound Twins

You probably aren’t having an ultrasound this week, because you’ve got the mid pregnancy scan coming up soon.

That’s a biggie, and it’s one where you’ll find out how your babies are developing, how they measure up, and whether there’s any cause for concern.

We’ll go into this more, next week, so make sure you check back then.

Things to Do This Week for a Healthy Pregnancy

  • It might be worth starting to search for a paediatrician. You want someone you’re comfortable with, and someone you can trust. A great starting point is to ask friends and family who are already mothers for their recommendations.
  • Take some time for yourself. You’re probably starting to feel the effects of being pregnant with twins, so an evening of pampering could be just what the doctor ordered.
  • If you haven’t already, start considering baby names. This is doubly important if you’ve decided to find out your babies sexes in the coming scans.
