How to Choose the Best Potty Training Seat

0
Best Potty Training Seat

Potty training twins is an important stage of twin parenthood that is welcomed both with excitement and apprehension. Ready to say your final “goodbye” to those smelly baby diapers? Perfect, but where do you start from? Which is the best potty training seat?

It’s no secret that potty training isn’t up there with one of our favorite parenting jobs, but once mastered it’s totally worth it in the long run. While feeding your twins feels like a walk in the park when you have super-soft and convenient bibs such as the Drinking Buddies Twins Baby Bibs, the toilet training endeavours can certainly get messy and uncertain, especially when you’re tandem potty training.

But with the right tools and advice your babies are guaranteed to master the refined art of potty use in no time. The first and most important thing you will need is the right potty training seat. With the wide range available on the market you might feel quite overwhelmed, but we’re here to help you find the best potty training seat for your precious twins.

When to Buy a Potty Training Seat?

The best time to buy a potty seat is when your twins first start showing signs of readiness to start potty training. This is usually sometime between one-and-a-half to three years of age.

potty training boot camp

These are some of the signs that your twins are ready for toilet training:

  • You are changing far less wet diapers. Up until your babies are 20-months-old you are changing diapers all the time, because they’re not able to control their bladder yet. Once they are able to hold off for an hour or two, it means that they’re ready to transition to a baby toilet seat.
  • They can’t stand their dirty diapers anymore. As soon as they start communicating with you that they want their diapers changed, you know they’ve outgrown the diapers
    craze.
  • Your twins have predictable bowel movements. If your twins have a bowel movement at the same time every day, it means that they’ve built a toilet routine and it’s time to honor it.
  • Your babies crave privacy when they need to poop. Yes, they’re totally ready for their first-ever potty training seat!

How to Use a Potty Chair Vs. a Potty Seat?

You’re probably wondering what’s the best potty training strategy you can adopt to guarantee the success of your twins. While there is no rule that’s set in stone, there are generally two ways you can go about the potty training routine: train your babies with a potty chair or with a potty seat.

A free standing potty chair is a toddler-sized version of an adult toilet. It’s portable and easy-to-use, but the downside is that you still have to dump its content into a regular toilet and clean it up afterwards. Parents choose a potty chair to start with because some toddlers are intimidated by the size of a real toilet.

A potty seat, on the other hand, is a kid-sized seat that rests over the regular toilet seat. But don’t worry, your children won’t fall in because the potty seat reduces the basin hole and lets your little ones rest easily without having to balance. Usually, you would need a stool or a small ladder to go with it, so that your twins can climb up on it. This option is great for parents who want to skip the potty chair and use a shortcut to successful potty training.

Which Potty Seat Is Best for Use on a Real Toilet?

Our favorite potty training seat is the Munchkin Sturdy Potty Seat in Grey. It fits perfectly into a standard toilet, but the reason we love it so much is because it features small handles that your children can hold onto and feel secure and stable while doing their business. Additionally, the non-skid edges of the Munchkin Sturdy Potty Seat prevent it from moving, while providing extra comfort and security.

This potty seat features a wealth of other attributes, such as a built-in splash guard and feet-shaped edges which allow it to be stood up next to the wall, while saving you lots of space. Plus, it’s really easy to clean it, which is a massive bonus for busy parents of two.

Which Is the Best Potty Training Seat?

What can we say, we absolutely love the Little Chicks Potty Chair, is one of the best potty training seat. This one is toddler-sized and has an ergonomic design which makes it just the right fit for your toddler. With features that benefit both your children and you, the Little Chicks Potty Chair is designed for success in the bathroom. The potty also features a built-in splash guard and easy cleaning is guaranteed.

It’s also considered an express train to successful potty training. One customer said: “It helped potty train my daughter in 3 days due to the comfort”. Hop on it right away!

Planning a family getaway? The one thing you shouldn’t worry about when on your holiday is your twins’ toilet situation. The Jool Baby’s Folding Travel Potty Seat takes all your worries away: it’s compact, lightweight, and includes a free travel bag that makes it easy to carry around. 8 super-suction cups keep it very sturdy, allowing your toddlers to gain confidence when using the bathroom as a beginner.

It’s not only super compactable and fits most standard and public toilets securely, but it’s also incredibly stylish in a calming aqua color, perfect for both boys and girls. As a bonus, it comes with a 10-year warranty.

Choose the Best Potty Training Seat

The thought of potty training your twins might seem daunting at first, but once you buy the first potty training seats things start to fall into place. Before you begin with the toilet training endeavours, you need to look for signs that your twins are ready to switch from diapers to a real toilet. While there are two ways you can go about potty training your babies, it’s really up to what will best suit your twins’ needs. To give you in on a little secret, the success of your mission mainly depends on choosing the best potty training seat.

Sleep Training Twins: The Ultimate Guide

0
Newborn Baby Twins

Dear twin mom, we know you’re most likely suffering from sleep deprivation, but don’t worry, we have the solution for you!

Although there are a lot of useless pieces of advice about how to raise your newborn twins, there is one piece of advice that is old but gold, and we can’t argue against it. In order to be able to get some sleep for yourself, you need to have your babies on the same sleeping routine.

Yes, sleep training twins is one of the hardest tasks that any new twin mom has to face, but without it you’re pretty much lost. And I’m not exaggerating.

We’re here to share with you the best sleep training twins tips and guide you along the way of going to bed with a smile on your face.

Identical, But Individuals

Yes, your twin babies might share the same embryonic sac, but that doesn’t mean that they’re the same individual. Quite the opposite, they each have their own needs, feelings, as well as routines, even as infants. While most parents tend to treat their babies as the same person and try and impose the same habits on both of them, this tactic is only a recipe for disaster.

twin baby beds

This means that their sleep training patterns may vary, as well. It’s definitely not a mission impossible, but you should be prepared for the long wait. And remember that it’s totally okay if one of the twins catches on before their sibling does, but it’s okay, because they’ll both get there eventually. This is by no means a reason to make the other sibling feel ashamed or not good enough.

When Can You Start Sleep Training Twins?

We know that you can’t wait until your babies are going to bed at the same time, but hold off, momma.

Given that your babies are healthy and born full-term you should be able to start sleep training them between 4 and 6 months, as this is when babies are old enough to self-soothe and fall asleep independently.

If your twins are born prematurely (before 37 weeks of pregnancy), you may need to go by their adjusted age to determine when it’s an appropriate time to start sleep training twins.

Should you decide to wait longer than the recommended time you’re risking your twins developing a sleep regression, which makes it harder to sleep train them.

How to Sleep Train 4-Month-Old Twins?

Why should you start sleep training 4 month-old twins? Because this is when most babies are starting to drop their nighttime feedings and are ready to sleep for longer stretches of time. This is also the recommended age by expert doctors.

But before you start the sleep training ordeals you need to guard yourself with heaps of patience and strong will, because it won’t be easy. But know that with time and practice, you can definitely be successful. Here are our best tips for feeding, naps and bedtime routines that can impact your twins’ sleep schedules:

  • Always lay your babies down on their backs! This prevents them from choking or having SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)
  • The sleep train twin mattress matters! Always make sure that your babies are sleeping on a firm mattress, even if they’re sleeping outside of their twin bassinets and cribs. Also, avoid any toys, blankets, pillows or bumpers around your sweethearts. We love the Dream on Me 3″ Spring Coil Portable Crib Mattress, because it’s Greenguard Gold Certified to ensure optimum health, safety and peace of mind. Plus, you can take it anywhere to ensure that your babies always have a firm surface to sleep on.

identical twin babies

  • Develop all sorts of routines for your babies. When we talk about routines we don’t mean just sleep training twins, but also tandem feeding, tandem potty training and tandem playtime. This will help you with establishing a regular sleeping routine. This means that if one twin wakes up before the other one, you need to wake up the other twin, as well, even if it’s in the middle of the night.
  • Make sure that your babies are not overheating. The ideal room temperature for your newborn twins is 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, dress them in lightweight, breathable materials. Parents love seeing their angels in all of the Twin Onesies by TwinStuff. We absolutely adore the Miracle Onesie by TwinStuff, because it’s super fun, soft and your babies can nap with style. We couldn’t agree more with the slogan on the Miracle Onesies: “sometimes when you wish for a miracle… you get two”.
  • Add white noise. A sound machine that plays a repetitive rhythm can help ease a baby to sleep. Although not mandatory, it’s definitely a nice addition to your sleep training twins ordeal. We love the Magicteam White Noise Machine, because it features 20 non-looping sleep sounds, so you can be sure that at least one of them will do the job.

Can Twins Sleep in the Same Crib?

That seems to be the question of the decade. There are lots of conflicting opinions yet no unanimous conclusion has been made.

On the one hand, doctors believe that it’s not a good idea if your twins are sleeping in the same crib, because it could be quite dangerous for your babies. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) firmly advises against having a shared bed for your twins. The reason is that sharing a crib can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

SIDS is one of the biggest concerns of parents of both singletons and multiples. Although the chance of this happening is quite minimal, approximately 1 in 2,000 infants, twins are at a higher risk because they are often born prematurely at 37 weeks or even earlier up to 32 weeks, or have low birth weights. Having two separate beds for your twins will limit the chances of your babies becoming entangled with one another, suffocating or getting overheated.

how many baby bottles do i need

On the other hand, some parents believe that twins should share a room or a crib is quite beneficial for twin babies, because it resembles the womb experience their babies had when they were in mommy’s tummy. They are already comfortable with being with each other, which means that sharing the same crib can help them get adjusted to the new world together and faster.

If you decide to put your infants in the same crib you should only do this for the first 3 months. Once your babies start wiggling and turning around the chances of SIDS increase significantly. Make sure you designate a spot for each twin in the crib and establish bedtime routines, so that they don’t get entangled with each other. Position them at opposite sides of the twin crib, or place them head-to-head, or get a crib divider for twins.

Twin Sleep Training and Feeding Schedule

Even wondered how some twin moms get to have a few more hours of sleep than you, and always seem to be on top of everything? We’ve uncovered their sacred – sleep training twins. While you might have given this a shot already and decided that it isn’t for you, with patience and practice you will achieve the results you want! And believe me, you want your twins to be on the same sleeping and feeding schedule, so that you can dedicate some “me time”. With our trusted tips & tricks you will be able to master the sleep training twins ordeals.

How to Read Your Twin Baby Bump?

Twin Baby Bump

Your twin belly bump is your way of saying “I’m pregnant with twins”. Usually bigger and rounder than a singleton pregnancy belly, your twin baby bump is your charm for 9 months.

While no two twin pregnancies are the same, there are lots of common symptoms and stages you will most likely go through, and your twin baby bump is the biggest indicator of what you’re going through. It’s like an open book you can always turn to and find the answers you need. It will also indicate if there are any anomalies going on.

As a twin mom you should learn to listen to your body and monitor your twins pregnancy week by week. Here is how.

5 Weeks Pregnant with Twins: It’s Just the Beginning

At 5 weeks pregnant with twins, you’ve either just heard the news of the year, or are just about to do so. The first ultrasound scan is when you find out that you’re pregnant with twins, and that usually happens between 5-8 weeks of pregnancy. It’s easy to recognize a twin pregnancy, because there are two gestational sacs on the screen instead of one.

Yes, this is just the beginning, but you’re given this time to psychologically prepare yourself for what’s to come.

8 Weeks Pregnant with Twins: Welcome the Symptoms

After the initial shock, you’re now thrown into deep waters with your twins pregnancy. At around 8 weeks pregnant with twins you’ll start experiencing your very first pregnancy symptoms. And I’m not going to lie, they’re the worst during this time.

Your twin pregnancy symptoms will be very similar to those of a singleton pregnancy, only more acute. Expect morning sickness, breast tenderness, drowsiness and frequent urination.

That being said, morning sickness tends to be the most common and unpleasant one of all. To alleviate the discomfort, we recommend you to use peppermint essential oil. The DoTERRA Peppermint Beadlet Essential Oil is a highly-trusted special blend with proven results. You can directly inhale from the bottle, put a few drops on a cotton pad or in a diffuser. Moreover, the convenient beadlets are ideal for traveling and on-the-go, because you never know when your nausea will strike.

Another thing that is really going to benefit you at this time is starting a pregnancy journal. If you’re wondering what pregnancy diary to get that includes prompts and is fun to write in, we recommend you the Pearhead My Pregnancy Journal. It features 74 colorful pages with guided sections to help you document every special moment of your twin pregnancy journey. Go ahead and write down your thoughts, emotions and symptoms to better monitor the progression of your twin pregnancy.

12 Weeks Pregnant with Twins

Congratulations, you’ve reached the end of the first trimester of your twins pregnancy! This marks the end of these horrible pregnancy symptoms prominent for the first trimester and your ease into a less turbulent trimester.

By 12 weeks of your pregnancy your twins will weigh four times as much as they did at the start! As well as that, by the end of the first trimester they’ll be fully formed tiny people, with all of their organs and everything else where it should be.

Week 16 Ultrasound

Week 16 can be really exciting for many twin moms-to-be, because it’s packed with so many wonderful things happening in your twin baby bump!

when do you find out the gender of twins

First of all, you will be able to hear your babies’ heartbeat for the first time. How amazing! At this stage, your babies are getting bigger and bigger every single day. At 16 weeks pregnant with twins, they will be around 3.5 ounces in weight, and around four and a half inches long, about the size of an avocado!

With your growing belly in mind you might want to invest in a high-quality maternity belt. We highly recommend you the AZMED Maternity Belt – a beloved pregnancy treat by many moms-to-be. In fact, it’s hard to imagine someone going through a pregnancy, especially twins pregnancy, without one! This maternity belt supports your baby bump, reduces pregnancy pains, relieves lower back pain and corrects poor posture.

It’s also quite relieving knowing that at this stage of your twins pregnancy the chances of miscarriage are very low.

Halfway through Your Pregnancy: Time to Chillax

During month 5 of your twin pregnancy between weeks 17 and 21, you’re going to have a really chilled time. Well, at least a little bird told us so.

As long as your babies are going through a healthy development in your womb, these weeks are pretty relaxed. Take the time to see your friends and family, and take it easy.

This is the time when your babies start to be able to hear what’s going on out there, so why not talk to your little angels and bond with them?

It’s in this month that you can normally find out the gender of your twins through an ultrasound scan, only if you want to. I bet you can no longer wait!

Third Trimester: The Long Wait

Wow, you’re almost at the final stretch. You’ve done so well so far, but it’s not the time to relax yet. This is a super critical stage of your twins pregnancy, because there are quite a few complications that might occur related to your twin birth. That’s why it’s super important to stay healthy, calm, and monitor the development of your babies as closely as possible.

Most twins are born preterm at 37 weeks or earlier, as opposed to 40 weeks for singletons, so it’s normal to feel a bit anxious about that, but don’t put too much thought into it, because as we said, it’s quite common. Usually rounder and bigger than a singleton pregnancy belly, your twin belly can tell you a thing or two about what’s going on in your womb. All you have to do is listen! Each week of your pregnancy brings about an array of symptoms, fetus developments, and exciting news. It’s really important to take good care of yourself at this time and not to neglect any unusual signals your twin baby bump is giving you.

Should Twins Share a Crib?

First of all, there are never-ending debates in regards to whether twins should share a twin crib or not.

Doctors believe that sharing a crib is not a good idea, in fact it could be quite dangerous for your babies. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) firmly advises against having a shared bed for your twins. The reason is that sharing a crib can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

can twins share a crib

SIDS is one of the biggest concerns of parents of both singletons and multiples. Although the chance of this happening is quite minimal, approximately 1 in 2,000 infants, twins are at a higher risk because they are often born prematurely at 37 weeks or even earlier up to 32 weeks, or have low birth weights.

That’s why doctors recommend that separate sleep is better for twin babies. This will limit the chances of your babies becoming entangled with one another, suffocating or getting overheated.

Some parents, however, believe that sharing a crib is quite beneficial for twin babies, because it resembles the womb experience their babies had when they were in mommy’s tummy. They are already comfortable with being with each other, which means that sharing the same crib can help them get adjusted to the new world together and faster.

However, there is not enough sufficient evidence to convince doctors that co-bedding is a safe sleeping arrangement for twins or multiples.

How to Make Sure that Your Babies Are Safe When Co-Bedding?

If you decide to try the co-bedding method, there are a few things you can take into consideration to ensure that your twins sleep safe.

First of all, you should only do this for the first 3 months. Once your babies start wiggling and turning around the chances of SIDS increase significantly.

It’s really important to designate a spot for each twin in the crib and establish a sleeping routine, so that they don’t get entangled with each other. Position them at opposite sides of the twin crib, or place them head-to-head.

What can really help with that is a crib divider for twins. This will give you a peace of mind knowing that your babies won’t get entangled with each other and will help with establishing a routine.

The Best Portable Crib for Twins

Another useful baby gear you can get is a baby lounger, which you put in the cot and which keeps the baby in one place, while providing it with comfort, as if it’s being cuddled. We highly recommend the Mamibaby Co-Sleeping Nest for Babies, which is made from 100% breathable cotton material and features a 360 degree protective side guardrail design that guarantees that your babies sleep safe.

Get two of them and place them in the twin crib, or your adult bed, the living room sofa, or even take them on your next holiday. It’s not only a life-saver for any situation, but it also makes your co-bedding for infants possible.

Baby Twin Bassinet: An Alternative to Co-Bedding

A twin bassinet is a great way to save space and still have your angels at close proximity. Bassinets have been used by parents for ages, because they give the stability, firmness and safety any newborn needs.

Plus, you don’t have to compromise on storage space and convenience, because there are incredible baby twin bassinets available nowadays that are turned into mind-blowing nursery centers for twins.

Our personal favorite is the Retreat Twins Nursery Center by Baby Trend, and it’s also a customer’s favorite: “the best twin bassinet out there in my opinion”. It has everything you will ever need and more in just one place: two removable Rock-a-Bye bassinets that you can take wherever you want, a changing table, a deluxe parent organizer, and a one-hand locking mechanism.

What you will love the most about this twin nursery center is the featured deluxe parent organizer. You can store all of your babies’ essential gear in it, and most importantly, the Best Friends Matching Onesie. As soon as your babies wake up you can dress them in their favorite matching onesies and get ready for a great day!

The Retreat Twins Nursery Center by Baby Trend is also a kind of a Pack n’ Play crib, because it easily converts into a play yard, accompanied by the two toys that come with it to ensure that the fun is always there.

Bedtime Rules and Schedules with Twins

Top Safe Sleep Tips for Twin Babies

These are our favorite safe sleep tips for baby twins that will minimize the chances of SIDS and will ensure the comfort of your little angels.

  • Always lay your babies down on their backs! This prevents them from choking or suffocating
  • Make sure that the sleeping surface your twins are lying on is firm and that the sheet is well-fitted, especially if they’re sleeping outside of their twin bassinets or twin baby cribs. Also, avoid any toys, blankets, pillows or bumpers around your sleeping sweethearts
  • Make sure that your babies are not overheating. Dress them in lightweight, breathable materials. Parents love seeing their angels in the Miracle Onesie by TwinStuff, because it’s super fun, soft, and your babies can nap with style. We couldn’t agree more with the slogan on the Miracle Onesies: “Sometimes when you wish for a miracle… you get two”. The ideal room temperature for your newborn twins is 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Try and develop the same routine for your twin babies to ensure that they have a synchronized sleeping schedule, so that they can get drowsy and nod off at the same time. This is your key to some “me time”

Crib Divider for Twins: It’s a Good Option?

The safe sleep of your newborn twins is your biggest priority. Although the chances of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) are present, there are a number of things you can do to ensure the safety of your babies. For example, getting a crib divider for twins means that your babies can share the same crib until they’re 3-months-old, and bond with each other. You can also get a baby twin bassinet that’s also a twin nursery center, or a co-sleeping nest for inside and outside of the crib. Whichever sleeping arrangement you choose, you should follow our top safe sleep tips!

What Are the Best Twin Breastfeeding Positions?

Twin Breastfeeding Positions

It’s a general consensus that breastfeeding twins is one of the biggest challenges that any new twin mom faces.

You have two ways you can go about this: feed them separately or try and feed them both at the same time. While the first one seems much easier because each baby has its own temperament and personal needs, if you can master tandem breastfeeding you will make your life ten times easier in the long run. Yes, at first it’s going to be a struggle getting both babies to latch at the same time, but once you establish a tandem feeding routine you will be amazed by the ease of it.

We are here to give you all the insights about twins’ nursing and help you decide which one of the twin breastfeeding positions is the best for you. Stay tuned!

Do I Need Lactation Consultations?

The short answer is “yes, definitely”. Lactation consultations are designed to give you the best advice on what will and what wouldn’t work with your twins in terms of breastfeeding them.

Usually, hospitals offer free lactation consultations for new moms and you should make the most of the resources which are available to you.

However, if you’re giving birth at home you will have to arrange your own lactation consultations. Nevertheless, home birth is not recommended when expecting twins because there are many potential complications associated with twin birth, and you don’t really want to risk it.

The Best Twin Breastfeeding Positions for Tandem Feeding

While you might start off with feeding each baby individually, you will want to master tandem breastfeeding as soon as possible to make your life easier.

Here are the best tried & tested twin nursing positions that moms love. We encourage you to try as many of them as possible, in order to find your own fit.

    • The Football Hold. This is the ultimate beginner’s twin breastfeeding position, because it’s the easiest one to get the hang of, especially if you have tiny newborns, and it’s also a classic one. You will need to place your babies with their feet tucked behind your arms and across your ribs, while their heads are at each of your breasts. As newborns they will need a lot of support for their heads and feet if you’re doing the football hold nursing, so it’s best to use a nursing pillow
    • The Cradle Hold. This one is a little bit more difficult when tandem breastfeeding, because you’re using both your arms. The heads of your babies are at each of your breasts, their bodies are laying on your arms, and their feet or legs, in your arms. This breastfeeding position is great if you don’t have the support of a nursing pillow, but you might require the help of someone else to assist you with positioning the babies.

tandem breastfeeding twins

    • The Double Cradle or Cross Cradle Hold. In this position, you need to sit slightly reclined cradling each baby. One twin will lay on a diagonal across your body, with their feet to your hip, while their twin will take the same position on the opposite breast and hip, while wrapping over the first twin’s body. This twin nursing position is quite easy to hack and is also a long-term one, because you can keep coming back to it even when your babies get older
    • Football and Cradle Hold. In this position one baby is in a cradle hold, and the other baby is in a football hold – a great combination for extra ease
    • Saddle or Parallel Hold. You need to sit in a reclined position with your babies laying on your front, sitting upright, and facing your chest. You will cradle them with your arms, but because you are reclined, gravity will help keep them in place. This position is ideal for older babies because they have more neck support or are able to sit upright

The Best Breastfeeding Pillow for Tandem Nursing

As you already know some of the twin breastfeeding positions for tandem feeding require the use of a nursing pillow. A good breastfeeding pillow will provide you with all the support you need to get your babies to latch at the same time, and avoid back problems for you.

We absolutely love the My Brest Friend Supportive Nursing Pillow for Twins. Just like the name suggests, this is your new best friend when tandem feeding your babies. It is specifically designed to accommodate two babies at once, and offers the right support for both your tiny twins and yourself.

As we mentioned, a common issue with tandem nursing is back pain caused by leaning forward when your twins are latching. If you still feel like your back is being strained even when using the My Best Friend Pillow, you can add extra blankets or pillows to ease your back.

What is the Best Breast Pump for Twins and Do You Need One?

Getting your newborn babies to latch from the start, especially simultaneously, is a common issue for many moms of two. If this happens to you, the one thing you shouldn’t do is neglect the nutritional needs of your twins because of your determination.

One thing you can do is feed them separately at first and then slowly introduce tandem breastfeeding, regardless of how frustrating and tiring this might be for you.

But if this doesn’t work either, you might have to figure out an alternative that involves bottled milk, either pumped breastmilk, or a substitute. For example, you can have a little system where you breastfeed one of the twins and simultaneously feed the other one with a bottle during one of the feeds, and then swap for the next one. This way your babies are at least being breastfed during half of their feeds.

Of course, pumped breastmilk is much better than a store-bought substitute. If you have enough milk supply you should invest in a twin breast pump to make sure you’re stocked up on that natural breast milk.

We recommend you the award-winning Haakaa Manual Breast Pump. Doctors and celebrity moms vouch for this silicone manual breast pump and especially highlight its ease of use. The Haakaa Manual Breast Pump is much more simplified than any electric breast pump and uses the power of natural suction. It’s also super easy to clean – it only requires soaking in boiling water for 2 mins and voila! You can also take it anywhere with you due to its compactability and lightweightness.

Give Your Babies a Little Treat

Tandem breastfeeding doesn’t have to be this exhausting and dreadful experience. On the contrary, you can make it fun for both you and your babies.

So how can you do that? Why don’t you start by getting some funky matching bibs for your little angels? The Drinking Buddies Twins Baby Bibs are a quirky option with a super catchy slogan. Moreover, they’re ultra soft and breathable making twin life easier.

Master Twin Breastfeeding Positions

Twin breastfeeding: the most important part of the development of your babies, yet the most difficult one to master. Dear mom, you’re not alone in this! There are tons of moms who struggle with getting their babies to latch, especially at the same time. Tandem breastfeeding is your best bet but until you get the hang of it you might sweat a bit. There are quite a few twin breastfeeding positions for tandem twins nursing that you can try out until you find your best fit. But if tandem breastfeeding isn’t your thing, don’t worry, because there are other alternative options.

How to Survive as a New Twin Mom?

0
twin-mom

You are now holding the title of a “twin mom” and you should be proud of it. But while you probably think that your experience is no different than that of a mom of one, you might want to think twice.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s an absolute blessing to be able to raise twins or multiples, but with that come a number of challenges that you need to face, especially as a new mother of twins. We are here to prepare you for the successful upbringing of your newborn twins, and equip you with all the tips and tricks you will need to survive as a new twin mom. You’ve got this, momma!

The Bittersweet Reality of Being a Twin Mom

Your twin pregnancy has probably already given you a taste of what having twins is like. Most moms of multiples experience quite a challenging pregnancy that is unlike any other singleton pregnancy. Not only that you’re having double the symptoms, but it’s also likely that you’ve had some sort of a complication, the most common of which is preterm labor.

Now that your babies are out of your womb it’s time to face the bittersweet reality of being a twin mom. The first ordeal you will face is isolation. Not because you don’t have the time and capacity to leave the house, but simply because you feel like you need to be good at this. You think that you are the chosen one and destined to be an impeccable twin mom. You are so determined to do this right that you keep refusing help from friends and family when you desperately need it.

Twin Pregnancy Week by Week

It comes by no surprise that most mothers of twins or multiples are a stay-at-home-mom. Unless your job allows it or you and your husband are comfortable with working opposite shifts, there is pretty much no way you could be away from your babies for even a minute. With day care being so pricey, very few parents will be able to afford it, plus you will want to be as close as possible to your newborns.

But if only you leave your ego aside and let the help in, you will see a significant improvement in your mood, your manageability, and you might even have a spare minute or two for yourself to keep your sanity intact. Remember, you are not alone in this.

Tandem Twins Upbringing is the Key to Success

Getting your newborn twins on the same feeding, sleeping and pooping schedule is far from easy, but without it, you are pretty much lost. It’s especially important that you follow strictly the schedule you develop for your babies for the first year.

This will not only give you a sense of organization knowing that you have the heads-up for your twins’ next move, but it will also make the reach of some of the most important landarks easier. I’m talking about breastfeeding, sleeping and potty training: the three biggest challenges for any twin mom.

tandem breastfeeding

There are tons of tools to help you master the tandem upbringing. For example, the My Brest Friend Supportive Nursing Pillow for Twins is specifically designed to accommodate two babies at once so that you can tandem breastfeed them together. A common problem with tandem feeding is back pain caused by leaning forward when your twins are latching, and the My Best Friend Pillow can significantly help you with that. Once you’ve mastered tandem breastfeeding, getting your twins sleep-trained and potty-trained will feel like a walk in the park.

Make Time for Yourself

One thing you shouldn’t do as a twin mom is neglect your personal time. We talked about the “isolation syndrome” already, but even if you can’t or don’t want to go out of the house, you can still dedicate some time for yourself.

Ask your partner to look after the babies and you can have a little date with yourself where you do your most favorite activities: read a book, dance to some funky music, or simply sunbathe in the sun in your garden – this is your time and it’s totally up to you what you do with it.

Why don’t you get yourself the Lost In The Moment Sanctuary Spa Set, which contains bubble bath, salt scrub, hand cream, heel balm and face mask to help you get lost in the moment with Sanctuary elegant box of indulgent skincare and body treats that will leave you wishing for a few more moments of “me time”? And make sure that no one disturbs you with the DO NOT DISTURB I’M DISTURBED ENOUGH AS IT IS! Hanging Metal Sign.

Twin Pregnancy Week by Week Timeline

Twin baby Pregnancy

Carrying twins is one of the most exciting things that can happen to you. You are blessed with bringing into this world not just one but two human beings. With that, of course, comes a healthy dose of responsibility since twin pregnancies are considered higher risk compared to singleton pregnancies.

Do you want to be involved as much as possible in your babies’ fetal development? Then read our comprehensive twin pregnancy week by week timeline, so that you can know what to expect at each stage of your pregnancy, what your essential to-do-list should be, what your symptoms are telling you and how to ease them, what are some of the potential complications that might arise, and lots more.

We want to be a part of your pregnancy journey and help you as much as we can along the way.

1-4 Weeks Pregnant with Twins

At this point you will most likely still be in the unknown about your twin pregnancy. If you’re experiencing pregnancy symptoms or your motherly intuition is cuing you in, then you can get a pregnancy test from the pharmacy to determine if you’re pregnant or not. Obviously, you still won’t be able to find out if you’re carrying twins until your 12 week ultrasound, but at least you’ll know you’re pregnant.

twin pregnancy week by week

Fetal Development:

  • Your twins will develop in one of the following ways:
  • Fraternal (non-identical) twins: When two eggs are fertilized by two different sperms, two zygotes are created that become two embryo sacs and each has its own placenta. Fraternal twins can be either the same sex or a boy and a girl
  • Identical twins: When only one egg is fertilized and the zygote splits into two, two embryo sacs and one placenta are formed. The split happens early in the pregnancy. Identical twins have the same chromosomes, and will look the same and be the same sex
  • Implantation in the womb. Around two weeks after fertilization the fetuses burrow into the lining of the uterus
  • Placentas begin to form. About three weeks after fertilization, a placenta will start to form for each baby. In some rare cases, the babies may share one placenta.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms & Self-Care:

  • Morning sickness and nausea. What can really help you to alleviate morning sickness is peppermint essential oil. We recommend you using the DoTERRA Peppermint Beadlet Essential Oil, which is an excellent blend by an excellent brand. You can directly inhale from the bottle, put a few drops on a cotton pad or in a diffuser. Moreover, the convenient beadlets are ideal for traveling and on-the-go, because you never know when your nausea will strike in
  • Tender and swollen breasts. You are experiencing breast tenderness due to the hormonal changes happening in your body. During a twin pregnancy you are producing extra amounts of the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). The Lansinoh TheraPearl Breast Therapy Pack provides therapeutic relief for breast tenderness by offering both cold and hot therapy. Simply store it in the refrigerator or the freezer to activate its cold therapy potency, or put it in the microwave to reap the benefits of the hot therapy

5-13 Weeks Pregnant with Twins

The second half of the first trimester is extra exciting because this is when you will find out for sure that you’re carrying twins. What else are you to expect during this stage of your twin pregnancy?

Fetal Development:

  • Brain and spinal cord start to form when you’re 6 weeks pregnant with twins
  • Limbs and all major organs take shape by week 8
  • Two heartbeats are beginning to form and may start to beat
  • Fingers, nails and toes are fully formed by 12 weeks of pregnancy
  • Tooth buds start forming beneath the gums
  • Urine forms. Your babies are starting to produce urine, which gets released into the amniotic sac

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms & Self-Care:

  • Frequent urination. More bathroom visits than usual are a must, but don’t forget to stay hydrated
  • Fatigue. Make sure you rest a lot and don’t forget to take your vitamins, as iron deficiency is quite common during pregnancy, especially during multiples pregnancies. We truly recommend the Prenatal Multi + DHA Softgels by Nature Made, which are clinically proven to help the body absorb not only iron, but also folic acid. Doctors encourage all pregnant women to take a folic acid supplement starting one month before and throughout your pregnancy to prevent birth defects of your baby’s brain and spinal cord.
  • Increased vaginal discharge

when do you find out the gender of twins

To-Do List:

  • Book your first-ever ultrasound when you’re 12 weeks pregnant to find out that you’re not only carrying twins, but also the gender of your babies. If you decide to have an ultrasound scan earlier than week 12 you will not be able to find out the gender of your twins
  • It’s recommended that you do blood tests around week 10 which will determine if your babies have Down Syndrome, as well as, the gender of your twins
  • It’s time to start documenting your pregnancy journey. Why not get the Pearhead My Pregnancy Journal, which features 74 colorful pages with guided sections to help you commemorate every special moment of your twin pregnancy?

14-22 Weeks Pregnant with Twins

It’s time to show your lovely bump and brag to the world about the two little miracles you’ve been blessed with during the second trimester of your twin pregnancy. Speaking of miracles, we know exactly what you need to get before your twins are born: the Miracle Onesies by TwinStuff with a super catchy slogan and made out of soft, breathable material. This is the perfect going home outfit for when your babies are born and ideal for your first family photo. What else are you to expect?

Fetal Development:

  • Eyes start moving slowly at around week 16, even though they’re still fused shut
  • Start making little movements and sucking on their thumbs
  • Hearing develops and fine body hair appears
  • Skin is coated

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms & Self-Care:

  • Weight gain. If everything goes “according to plan”, your health care provider will advise you to gain somewhere between 37 to 54 pounds over the course of your pregnancy, which is a very healthy amount for a twin pregnancy
  • Difficulty sleeping. It’s likely that you won’t feel at your most comfortable while sleeping pretty much all of the time. That is so because of your growing belly. In order to avoid that, it’s best to do what most moms-to-be do – use a pregnancy pillow. Twin Pregnancy Symptoms & Self-Care:

28-32 Weeks Pregnant With Twins

Welcome to the third trimester of your twin pregnancy. This is when you have to be extra careful and monitor the development of your babies very closely, because the chances of preterm labor are extremely high during twin pregnancies. Here is what to expect and what to look out for.

Fetal Development:

  • Eyes start to open at around 28 weeks
  • Brain starts developing and bones start to harden

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms & Self-Care:

  • Hemorrhoids are quite common during the third trimester due to extra blood flow to the pelvic region combined with the pressure of a larger uterus
  • Braxton Hicks contractions are also quite common at this time. These are not necessarily birth contractions, rather your body is preparing for the real labor

Potential Complications:

  • At this stage preterm labor becomes a possibility. About half of all twin pregnancy births happen preterm, so you shouldn’t worry about it too much. Babies born before week 32 are considered extremely premature and are most likely going to be placed in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). That is why you should monitor your symptoms and contractions extra carefully at this stage

You’re at the last stage of your twin pregnancy if you haven’t already had a preterm labor. Now the chances of giving birth before week 37 are extra high, so you should have your hospital bag all packed-up and be ready to step into the birth mentality.

Fetal Development:

  • All the vital organs are developed at this point
  • Your babies will keep gaining weight and the longer it takes you to go into labor, the more developed and healthy they will be
  • Head-down position takes place and signals that your babies are ready to come out
